Gamer without a job :(
So, I am currently unemployed. I feel slightly like I shouldnt be allowed to look at the site now. I'm basicly a 3d computer artist, but finding work is extreeeeeemly tough over here in the UK. I'm living in Manchester at the moment and have been stuck with having to put up with a crummy call-center job to pay the bills in-between freelance work. But about a month ago the powers that be decided to fire me! Despite going out of my way to write an Access database for them to help people out that needed to swap shifts with each other!. So yeah, I've applied for this awesome job working on the background models for a new TV show. It's practically what I have been looking for since moving here. I would do that job for peanuts. BUT in the meantime while waiting to hear... I am finding it nigh on impossible to find something to fill the unemployed void. Any Mancunian GWJers that know of/are hiring at the moment?

Sounds like the time is ripe for a new job, I hate call centers. Don't just sit on your hands waiting for this new one to pan out, keep hitting the street and sending out resumes!

Git yerself a manual labour job! You'll get in shape, make decent money, and you'll meet... interesting people! You'll experience exciting... experiences!
Really, I'd recommend a physical job. Nothing lights a fire under your ass like a crappy job that you're exhausted from, and you really do make pretty good money, considering you're starting at the bottom. It may hurt the ego to go there, but that's the whole point. I never studied harder than during the period when I was humping roofing supplies up ladders 8 hours a day. It's motivating to work alongside 55 year olds who've been doing the job since they were your age.

Don't let yourself fall into the funk of unemployment. That's a deadly pit that's awful hard to crawl out of. Whatever you do (resume edits, application spamming, practice interviews, cleaning house... playing video games?) make sure you end each day feeling like you've done something productive.

Well I've managed to find some temp work for Royal Mail.. going in to speak to the agency tommorrow so that should go ok... The girl on the other end of the phone seemed really cool and could appreciate that I don't want to be stuck in data entry or call center type work. In fact thinking about it the girl was kinda flirty... maybe I'll get a new job and a girl all in one! lol I like those odds

You're an artist. Of course it's going to be hard for you to find work...

Wow, sorry to hear that. Unfortunately the only jobs i had in manchester where with Barclays.... one in Withenshawe and the other right in the town centre (but they closed that office down). One of those was a call centre job but it was pretty cool...
I have a friend who has friends in Rare... but they're based in Liverpool... apart from that all the other jobs in the UK seem to be down in the south around Brighton etc....

M'yeah, I've heard that the TPS reports at Initech are quite enjoyable to do. If you could just go ahead and work there, that would be great. M'kay?
And don't forget your cover sheet.
All this science I don't understand. It's just my job five days a week.
Those are new by the way. Did you get the memo?

Wrong site. Try GamersWithoutJobs.com.
Seriously though, sorry to hear about the employment situation and hope you rebound quickly. I'm sure you could find work in the states, particularly CA and NYC.
