Lifetime Subscription to Hellgate: London - $150
Tuesday, September 11th, 2007 - 1:18pm
An optional lifetime subscription to a game with an optional subscription, only available for one month after the game's release.
I'm... going to have to think about this. Anyone know if it's $150 total, or $200 including the price of the actual game?
NOTE: This is not a doodle bug.

If it's $150 including purchase price, I'll consider it. If it's in addition to purchase price, I suspect I'll pass. I won't know within the first month if the game is honestly going to have 1.5 years + of life for me, though I strongly suspect it will.
an additional 150 would be my guess. I've heard about some of the things they plan, and I think this is my option. If you like the gameplay, you have a month from release to decide if it's worth it.

Yeah, I read through that press release, it's in addition to the price of the game.
That's a hard choice to make. If the game lasts as long for me (or even just half as long!) long-term as Diablo 2 did, then the $150 up-front is a bargain. But that's an awfully tough call to make up-front.
Considering my past correspondence with Sephirotic, I'm willing to lend this opinion a good deal of weight.

seeing how i detested Diablo 2, i'd say even $15 would be a waste of my money. That is if they really try to make it like Diablo 2.
Now, if they could promise me Diablo 1 quality, THEN i might think about it.
Keep in mind that I am a bit biased towards the game as a good friend is working at flagship and put me in the credits.

You know, i actually get what you mean... though D2 online portion was much better than D1....

Funny that I am so gung ho against the monthly subscription and yet this looks really appealing. I mean its basically at the point of whether I can come up with the money in that month after release.

Atmosphere and music were preferable to me in Diablo than in Diablo 2, and Hellgate looks to have more of the former's style than the latter's. However, the gameplay itself was more refined, expanded, and evolved in Diablo 2, which led that to be the preferred game to me.
I can't help but find this ridiculous. I'm still hoping Hellgate will be a good game and i will probably buy it. But i won't pay the subscription fee. I just can't get over paying for what is essentially buying Diablo but having to pay a subscription fee to get all the features. I see this lifetime offer as a quick money grab from consumers before they can really see what they would be getting for their money.
I dont know. I see it as Flagship not realizing what leverage they are giving the players.

I dont know why, but I trust them to be one of the few game companies that are more responsible. The founders are from the company that took 4 years to release patch D2 1.10. But that can be a positive as it sets precedent for a company that supports its game 4/5 years after release.

If memory serves, the reason the D2 patch took 4 years is because only one person was working on it and that was in his spare time. After all, it wasn't going to generate any revenue.
If you pre-order the game from Best Buy, Gamestop or Walmart, you get access to the beta, which begins in... 6 days.

I think I can wait until release. It's barely more than a month and a half away and we have Halo 3 coming out to keep us busy in just a couple weeks.
As for the lifetime subscription thing, that will depend on how I like it after I've actually started playing.

Its been changed back to TBA. I do hope its soon though =)
And yes, the patch was done by one person in his spare time. I actually happen to know this person. (more of a friend of a some coworker friends) He works for Flagship now.

I'd rather put $150 in the local raffle to win a $2 million luxury home. A life time subscription to a video game that'll ultimately be replaced by a sequel? Even if I lose, the contest would hold my interest as long Hellgate probably will.

I still fail to see how this game is worth 75% of a LOTRO or World of Warcraft. The only expansion plans I've seen have been vague at best. I don't want to be there 9 months later with Bill Roper apologizing to his most hardcore fans. Of course Hellgate could turn out like Bioshock and blow everyone away when it comes out, but....
We shall grapple with the ineffable, and see if we may not eff it after all.

I'm very dubious of this. I look at this as a game shipping with crippled features so the company can make more money off the regular version. Now some people may not see it that way, fine, but I do.
150 dollar for a life time sounds basically like charging 200 dollars for the game.
is hellgate london really worth 200 dollars?

Well, if it is only for hardcore and pvp servers and extra character slots and owning guild house, no. Those are features that should be included in the box as they were in D2's box
If Diablo 2 had regular updates like new rune words, new areas (that meant something or gave good quest rewards or with good bosses), new items and crafting recipes, new monsters (not just reskins), new classes, new skills, I would definitely have been happy to buy a lifetime subscription. And I'd still be playing it...

I've been in the Alpha test for a little while now. The Alpha is by no means even close to final code and I'm not sure if I'm still under NDA so I won't say much beyond that if the play experience in the Alpha isn't substantially improved in the final version, there's no way I'd even pay month-to-month, much less $150 for life.

I may be fooling myself but I figure at 10$ a month they could reasonably nickle and dime us to death for the first ~6 months. With the founder's subscription they know they'd better bust their asses to come up with something substantial in the first 2 months (items, levels, monsters). And they'd better have a new class at least announced by 6 months if not in game by then.

I don't know, the entire pricing scheme for hellgate seems vaguely forboding to me, let alone this $200 life time subscription. I'd need some sort of contractual promise to be included to keep updating and maintaining the game at a set minimum level, despite and lulls in profitablity.
Meh, I'll be happy with the free content.

That's understandable, I have alot of faith in the developers because they are from blizzard but I am really tempted to pay the 150 for the lifetime subscription, I am just scared that 6 months down the line
they will be like it doesn't have that many subscribers, so we are scrapping the plans for additional content and than being out the 150 bucks.
that said if the game takes up my life like diablo 1 and 2 did than it's more than worth the 150.
It's really hit or miss, I don't know

I'm in the wait and see camp. And when I see, it will have to be one awesometic game to warrant 150 dollar, or a monthly subscription for that matter. I do not think they will meet my high standards, but that's mainly because the gameplay from Hellgate does not sound like my kind of thing.
I don't watch, I interact!
Definitely not going for a lifetime subscription for $200 or $150.
I got very into another game made by ex-Blizzard employees: Guild Wars.
I played more Guild Wars than probably any other game I've played before, got really involved, formed a Guild that was the best team in America and went on to place 3rd then 2nd at the two Guild Wars World Championships. I put a lot of hours into that game, more than 1000 in the first year.
In total I spent pretty close to $200 over about 18 months. That was the original game, a second account, 2 additional chapters, and 3 extra character slots. And none of that ever came with a monthly subscription. I had the option to pick up different pieces at my own pace along the way.
I was kind of burned out after a year and pretty much totally burned out by 15 months. Looking back the last $60 (chapter 3 and the extra character slots) were unnecessary purchases - I hoped they would rekindle my interest but it didn't. I reallye njoyed those first 12 months, and that's a long time to play a game.
I see no reason to commit that much money to Hellgate up-front, particularly since my buying habits have changed and I'm far more likely to move from game to game than I am to stick with one as single-mindedly as I did with Guild Wars.

This is, of course, why you have a month to decide on the lifetime subscription. It's not like you have to pay for it (or even decide) before y'all get a chance to sink your meaty hooks into the game for a while. Strikes as kind of nice of the devs to offer the option without looking for commitment up front.

If anyone's interested, GoGamer has the standard version for $45 and the special edition for $55. Their pre-order bonuses are the same as Gamestop's (beta access, opportunity for the lifetime subscription, etc.) and the "Wasp" armor dye.
