PC Gaming: Still worth it in the 360/PS3 era?

With all the talk about Team Fortress 2 and Bioshock that's been out lately, it got me thinking about myself and PC gaming. I grew up on PC gaming FPS from Wolfenstein 3D on and I've always loved the mouse/keyboard combo. I mainly ignored the xbox generation and all the hype that came with the first Halo thinking "How can those guys play an FPS with a controller?" while at the same time pumping more and more cash into my PC for video cards, cpu, ram..etc..etc.

Late last year I finally took the plunge and bought a 360 (mainly after seeing gwj guys after a blast on it) and I noticed shortly there after my view on PC gaming started to sour. For the first time I started playing games like Gears of War, and Halo 2 on the 360....games I swore I'd never be able to play without a keyboard/mouse. To my suprise it was fun and just took a little getting used to with a controller.

Xbox live was always something that suprised me too. The ability to see what your friends were playing and being able to join or invite to a game was great. I was used to having to get my friends together on Vent and repeat server IP's 50 different times because someone couldn't hear you. Then someone would have lag or get kicked out and you'd have to find a new server and repeat the process.

To be fair the 360 is not the only thing that has soured me towards PC gaming. As I'm getting older the bills and responsibilites are piling up and I just no longer have the desire to shell out for new PC components once every 1-2 years so I can play the newest games. PC exclusive games are becoming a rarity, and even though I miss the kb/mouse controls.....it's hard to beat a couch and 32 inch hdtv.

I really didn't mean to rant on this long. I just wanted to throw my thoughts out there and see what you guys thought.

If not for MMORPG's my PC would probably never get used for gaming.. I got Bioshock on both the PC and 360 and while the graphics on the PC were remarkably better than the 360 it wasnt enough to get me to play on the PC.. I dunno.. hunching over my keyboard and mouse looking at a 30" screen just isn't "immersing"(?) enough for me.. I'd rather sit on my couch with just a joypad and play on my 50" Plasma.. The graphics on the 360 are good enough to get the point across..

I think what sealed it was playing on my PC I found the Xbox Controller to be better playing it.. so at that point I figured whats the point?

And when we all have 50" plasma, we may all feel differently. That said, the HD revolution is actually a really great point. One thing the PC has always had going for it is fidelity of image, and as HD becomes more ubiquitous it snatches one more reason for playing the PC out from under the rug. That said, there are still a ton of games and genres that I like that are better matched for the PC, most importantly including strategy, sims (not the brand) and MMOs.

I stil vastly prefer the controls of FPS on the PC, but getting them to run properly is increasingly a hassle. However, action games with complex controls and options are still better on the PC, usually meaning those games designed only for the PC and not cross-platform. I played Bioshock on my 360 as well.

I actually just upgraded my PC. When I get my second 8800 it will total at about 2 grand. This thread... This is not a good time for this thread..

While I agree with Elysium that PC gaming has lost the massive graphics advantage, consoles have also lost an advantage. They used to be much more reliable. I'm on my 3rd 360 already. I suppose that is a bit specific, though. I don't expect my PS3 to die any time soon.

That's about the last hurdle though, isn't it?

I know for me that if I have a choice, I'll pick the console version over the PC version any day of the week... unless it's an RTS or MMO.

What interests me is some of the input creativity coming out of the console industry lately (take the wiimote for example). I really think it's just a matter of time until someone decides to solve the console RTS/FPS/MMO control problem for good. If we can invent a control scheme that makes the console versions just as robust and easy to play as the PC versions, I believe that will be the beginning of the end for PC gaming.

It has lost the massive graphical advantage for now. Crysis in DX10 is already raising the bar above what the consoles can do and that will continue to advance. There's no question though that the line is beginning to blur. Certain genres are still far better done on PC in my opinion (MMO, RTS and for me FPS) but with things like cheap hard drives allowing almost every console to have one, things are starting to change. I think there will always be a dedicated PC gaming scene that I'll happily be a part of but I think it's going to become more and more niche and enthusiast driven.

Very well put. I nearly went ahead and bought a 360 for Bioshock, and after one of the new components was DOA, I even regretted not going the 360 route. But the real decision maker was that Civ 4, Dawn of War or Company of Heroes aren't available on the 360. So if I have to choose one and not both, then it remains the PC.

Not for much longer. UT3 has mouse/keyboard support on the PS3, and I have a feeling that other games will be falling in line behind it. Hopefully it's successful enough to force Microsoft's hand and get them to allow support.

Good topic. Recently I faced the choice of whether or not to get a new PC that could handle the latest games and if GameGuru hadn't put one of his 'older' computers up on the trading post, I might have abandoned PC gaming already. The strength of the PC (as Parallax mentioned) are its niche genres and MMOs for now. I don't think we'll ever see genres like realistic flight sims or detailed turn based strategy games on consoles (not necessarily for technical reasons but the audience isn't there.)

Also, while consoles have a good selection of games, PCs have a lot more when you consider the fact that it's much easier to develop and distribute games on the PC hence the indy market.

When my new computer is technologically obsolete, I really don't know if I'll get another or just... conform.

EDIT: I grew up as a PC gamer, from TRS-80 on, and never owned a console before I got a 360.

Yeah... right now my PC gaming rig is a necessary evil for the racing sims that are still my number one gaming passion. Forza and Gran Turismo are a joke compared to what they are doing on the PC.

Otherwise, I'm thinking of actually getting Team Fortress for the 360... it makes me feel ashamed after years of console bashing.

Well, there's not much difference between a console and a PC these days except locking you into the hardware and nickel and diming you.

There's no good reason for the 360 to not support keyboard and mouse - like the PS3 does - except that MS hasn't come out with an xbox branded wireless mouse+keyboard...

I'm fine with PC gaming and for customisability (of a game) you still can't touch it... console gaming is also fine but in my country there generally aren't many large enough houses to comfortably stick a screen bigger than 30-40 inches in your living room and not have to get rid of other bits of furniture... plus you'd be sitting a little close...

I haven't owned a console since the N64 about 10 years ago. All I play anymore are MMORPG, Strategy and FPS games. I get the draw of the console but I have yet to find a good enough reason to buy a console. I still get all the quality gaming I need from my PC.

There is a great reason. It keeps everyone on the same playing field which is important during multiplayer games. I'm sure I'm not the only one who doesn't want to worry about other people having a controller advantage. I like to leave that kinda stuff to my PC.

The 360 supports most USB keyboards but only for text entry and Media Center navigation.

Even if the 360 did support keyboard/mouse for FPS control I still wouldn't use it.. I mean how can I use those controls sitting on my couch? you cant.. I'd be forced to use my 360 at a desk..

I prefer the PC/vent combo to the 360/X-box Live combo, but I'm gradually softening my view on that because:

1) You now can play on a big screen HDTV that's also used in the family room for watching TV, so you don't have to feel guilty for pouring cash into a gaming monitor that only you will use

2) You can rent games and sell the ones you've played, which keeps costs down.

3) You don't have to worry about which freakin pixel shader your computer has when you see the big new game that everyone is talking about. You just go down to Blockbuster and rent it.

By "you," I mean me.

I've recently become a 360 owner myself. Basically it came down to a choice between it and a new graphics card.

I was literally a day away from an 8800 GTS when the warranty extension for the RRD problem was announced. I thought for a minute, looked at Guitar Hero 2 and pulled out the plastic.

The only game coming out exclusively for the PC in the near future that is at all appealing is Starcraft 2, you can trumpet Crysis and DX 10 as much as you like, but ....well.... meh. A generic shooter with nice particle effects is just not a motivation. SC 2 will probably run on a hamster powered calculator like the one I currently own with minimal upgrades, possibly even the laptop I'm considering moving to instead.

With even Civilization coming to consoles though the strategy itch can still be scratched. I already have C&C 3 for pc and I'm disinclined to double dip. If the expansion really will be standalone for the 360 as I've heard, I'm there like a bear.

Where I live console games are nearly twice the price of PC games, but that also helps simplify buying decisions, helping me to buy a bit less drek. Unfortunately 360 game rentals don't seem to have taken off as yet.

I'm the exact opposite of TheGameguru (or should I say Madvillain ). I haven't bought a 360 because I barely ever played Xbox games. The 360 games I wanted to play have shown up or are going to show up on PC. I think the game that will get me to buy a 360 is Virtua Fighter 5 because I'm a sucker for that series (and also Madden since EA has abandoned the PC version). The upkeep thing with PCs does suck but I'm not the type to need to play the latest games at the present time with the highest options. I actually prefer playing games with the 360 controller on PC when possible. I'm using it for Bioshock right now.

I'm mostly converted to console gaming for the indeterminate future. The exclusives are just too good to pass up, and upgrading my PC to match the 360's graphical prowess seems more and more like a waste of money. Most PC titles either don't look particularly interesting (Crysis) or should run reasonably well on my old machine (Hellgate: London, Sam & Max Season 2, indie titles).

As Funkenpants mentioned, being able to easily buy used/sell/rent console titles keeps costs down, compared to the PC side where publishers are increasingly using intrusive DRM to ensure those options aren't available.

Everything can be debated, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's debatable.

being 34, and having been exclusively a pc gamer for 15 years until just a couple months ago, i'm also at the point where i'm wondering whether i'll fork out money for an 8800gts/x in the near future, or just let the pc (e6600/7900gtx) live out its remaining days playing whatever games it can. I have a 360 and a ps3, i'm debating whether to spend money in the future on a graphics card or on a wii...

granted, for the time being, i will always choose a pc version of a title over any console version...

Which is exactly why someone needs to put some serious thought into another control scheme that allows the ease of use of a mouse/kb but without the bulk. With all the brilliant hardware designers in the world, someone has got to be able to come up with something better... right?

I may be ready to make the switch, especially if I delay upgrading any longer, but my current rig was just good enough to run Oblivion. It currently runs S.T.A.L.K.E.R., and if I'm lucky it will run Bioshock and I can put off deciding until the next killer app comes by.

I find it interesting that so many site 'upgrade fatigue' as a reason they switched over to consoles. I've always thought of upgrading my PC being no different than buying a new console (its usually time to upgrade when I can't play the majority of games smoothly, usually a 3-4 year cycle). Perhaps the difference is that I build my PCs, so its not as expensive as getting a whole new system, and I actually enjoy the process. My friends and I have something of a PC arms race...trying to see who has the best rig after our update cycle.

As far as sitting on a couch versus being at my desk, there is just a certain level of involvement when I am playing in front of my PC that I just don't get on the couch. I can't imagine not playing Bioshock glued to my monitor, or any other FPS, or RPG, or RTS. The games that I play almost demand that I experience them in this way. The couch just seems...to far away.

I stopped playing primarily on consoles when I saw one PC game: X-Wing. I saw nothing at the time that was comparable on the generation of consoles at that time. Even now, when the consoles are running quite evenly with PCs, I've seen nothing to switch me back, to show me that there is an experience on the consoles that is superior to what I play on PC.

Being an old Shock fan, I thought this... until I actually played BioShock.

Now I can't imagine not playing BioShock on a big HDTV in a dark room with 5.1 surround sound filling the room. Up close to a smaller LCD screen with headphones doesn't cut it.
