World of Goo (Bridge Builder Fans Beware!)
Tuesday, September 11th, 2007 - 4:19am
So, 2D Boy released the first trailer of World of Goo - and it's looking sooo adorable. Kind of like Bridge Builder (or Pontifex or Bridge Construction Set respectively) with a few more elements and, well, a decent art direction. And since Chronic Logic doesn't really seem to be working on new Bridge games anymore, WoG seems just to be the next physics puzzle title after aforementioned games and Armadillo Run to keep an eye on... ![]()

It looks very Worms 2-ish. I am eternally devoted to Armadillo Run, so this looks very interesting, assuming the funky graphics don't get in the way of the gameplay.
It will do good to heart and head

And I will friend you, if I may,

Looks to be an expansion of a college project. Play the original Tower of Goo here.

Cool. I loved Pontiphex and the nvidia-only (or was it ATI only?) "Bridge-It." A friend and I had weeks of fun with trying different solutions for those bridge problems. We came up with some pretty wacked-out solutions, and laughed a lot at each others silly (read stupid) ideas as well.
Good times.
I wish they'd make a true sequel to the bridge builder games.

Love the art style, I just hope the gameplay's more varied than the trailer indicated.
Everything can be debated, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's debatable.

Release date is set! PC version will be available on Feb. 14, Mac and Linux ports to follow shortly afterwards. Oh, and the game will apparently also show up on Wii.
The thread title freaked me out just a little bit. For ten seconds or so anyway.

On a somewhat related note, I have it on good account that there's a new Bridge Builder game in the making, too.
*bonk*
If you've pre-ordered this one, you should soon be able to download the first chapter. Just tried it, file wasn't available yet though. World of Goo demo and final version of Audiosurf released within 24 hours - awesome!
So, I finished chapter 1. And am so looking forward to the final version. Love the art direction and the music. The game clearly is a must for people who dug Bridge Builder. It's also the kind of title to appeal to your non-gamer wife/husband.
Is it Chronic Logic or Auran that is making a new Bridge Builder game?
Wow I hope that's true.
I'll be grabbing/pre-ordering Goo soon.

Wow, it's even more fun than I was expecting it to be, and I had pretty high expectations! What an incredibly juicy little game.
Well, it sounded like "from the guy who made BB". Of course, that person, who said that, didn't really know the person in charge, so that would leave two options, in my opinion. Either Chronic Logic, since they're distributing BCS, Pontifex etc., or Cryptic Sea, which was co-founded by the guy who actually made the games and left Chronic Logic a while ago.
Heard that it's probably the 'guy' (Alex Austin) to be in charge. However, the project currently seems to be on hold or something...
Trailer #2!
Ahh OK thanks for the insider info. I hope it goes forward. I just loved Bridge-It and Pontiphex soo damned much.
And I'm sure World of Goo will fill the gap nicely for a while.

With the release coming later this month, is there any local hype for the game? I saw RockPaperShotgun's glowing review and dropped my preorder, and just the chapter 1 preview that you get from that is fairly extensive, and a blast so far. The physics seem much more forgiving than Tower of Goo, which I have no problems with since you have to build all of the various structures to get through the levels. Definitely on my watch list for this month.

And a glowing review from Eurogamer. These guys don't exactly dish out 9/10 on a daily basis, so the game is truly something special.
It's not Wandering Toast. Except in TF2, where it usually is.
The game will be released on both, WiiWare (North America) and PC, on October 13th, just FYI. And, hey, if you pre-ordered the game, you'll be able to play from Monday on already.
I preordered a long time ago, and I'm glad it's finally here, but I wish the profanity pack hadn't been delayed. Gosh darn it all.

The guys at 2D Boy were having issues with the servers for a while, and have an e-mail bot that only sends out 260 per hour, but I finally got my early download link for preordering a couple hours ago. My impressions from the chapter 1 preview remain unchanged; it is quite an amazing game. I'm surprised it's not more of a hit. I haven't seen any word about it's upcoming release on any of the major blogs, except for a few specks or two on indie blogs and the aforementioned RockPaperShotgun.
I do have a few minor gripes, the foremost of which being that you're forced to use the little goo ball for a mouse cursor instead of just a regular cursor. I suppose they made it that way for the WiiWare release and didn't think to keep the cursor in for PC, but it'd be nice to at least have an option. Using that massive goo cursor making grabbing the exact right bit of goo a pain. Still an excellent game, and I suppose this stuff will be patched in in the future or something.
Any thoughts from those of you who preordered and got the download link? It's definitely in my "recommend" pile, though a few people I've shown it to have been turned off by the cartoon style.

I haven't played it yet, but I'm really looking forward to it -- I've been fascinated by the art style, the gameplay, and the hints at some kind of subversive story ever since the first trailer. I didn't preorder, but it'll likely be a day one PC purchase for me, even if I don't end up playing it much until the Linux or Mac versions are out.

I finally got it to download yesterday. So far it's still very entertaining, and has a nice bite-size quality to the levels. It's a good laptop game. The humor works well, it's dark but cheerful. I don't like the fact that all of your work can be destroyed in one sudden collapse. It requires more planning than you'd think from looking at it. Some of those levels are really vicious.
The "multiplayer" portion looks interesting, too, but I don't have enough extra goo to do much with it. It's a good season for goo right now, with this and de Blob, plus Gish 2 is coming. I really like goo games, for some reason. World of Goo is a great addition to the goo hall of fame.

You are aware of the white savepoint thingies that are flying around and enable you to go back step by step?
I'd forgotten about those. I don't find them very useful when I've created a really top-heavy structure. It just goes back one move, I've wasted a save, and then it still falls. The game occasionally, on a handful of levels, goes beyond challenging and becomes annoying. But that's just a minor problem, and maybe I'm the only one in that boat.

A review by me
This game is wonderful.
I give it arbitrary number out of the same arbitrary number.
I bought this on the glowing review by RPS. Its very fun, I've played through the first couple of stages. I like how they change it up so you don't know what's coming next. Actually the first couple of levels in the first stage are a little off-putting and annoying, as you've not yet gotten used to the physics, and it just seems like tedious trial and error. But once you get past those, its really nicely designed and well paced. The "multiplayer" seems a bit limited, is there an option to view other peoples towers rather than just seeing their little cloud representation of the tower's height?
I also like the DRM free distribution, that it'll be on mac eventually and that it's only $20. I think the community at large needs to pick this one up. Maybe you could do a front page review, Nyles...

Well, it could definitely use a little more attention. It's a lot of fun.

I've never been terribly good at this sort of game and usually call it quits a few hours in, but the positive press was enough to peak my interest enough to spend $20. From the chapter 1 preview, I'm glad I did, although I'm still afraid I might not make it far into the game before I get frustrated and quit.
