What are people playing on the DS these days?
Friday, September 7th, 2007 - 1:39pm
The boards lately have been dominated by Bioshock and other matters. Yet Nintendogs is rushing headlong to becoming the best selling non-bundled video game in history. The DS still sells a quarter-million+ every month. So what are people playing? My purchasing trigger finger has been getting itchy lately, yet when I look at the list of games released recently for the DS I don't see any AAA titles. Am I missing something? Should I put the wallet away and walk away quickly?

I've been playing Planet Puzzle League. It's a lot of fun but I'm not sure you should go buy another DS just to play it.

Well, that's kind of the thing. Since I'm not hung-up on buying used any longer, I could get a Phattie DS (I like those better anyway) for $80 or less. So not too expensive. Plus I could play my beloved Chu Chu Rocket again...
So I am tempted. But there's no one game that isn't Pokemon jumping out at me as a reason to buy the DS currently.

Ive been stuck in Castlevania:PoR for a long time now. Clubhouse games also sucks an inordinate amount of time away - even my wife (an avowed non-gamer) plays it. Im getting ready to trade a few other games in and pick up Hotel Dusk and one other, so it'll be good to know what some other people enjoy.

I'm about to finish puzzle quest and do some training for my brain (it's not a small task
) with Brain age 2.
Brain age 2 is better for me than the fisrt one cause i can play it in french.
I've read good thing about BK Jungle Climber and Worms: Open Warfare 2.
I'm thinking about purchasing worms.
I'm still playing Puzzle Quest and still enjoying it. Other hotness just keeps on distracting me.

I'm playing C:PoR and trying to complete FFIII lately. Once in a while, I jump back to Ouendan, Brain Age, Clubhouse Game, Metroid Prime Pinball, Puzzle Quest and Mario Basketball.
I'm waiting for Contra 4 and Phoenix Wright. The new DK game looks interesting so I may have to check it out.

I've been playing Izuna: Legend of the Unemployed Ninja. It's a roguelike dungeon crawler and I'm loving it. Has anyone played Azure Dreams for the PS? (I understand it was ported to the Gameboy colour (or GBA?) as well). I loved that game and Izuna is very much like it. Except I can play it on the bus.

My DS used to be my favorite system, but this summer sure sucked for it. I haven't played it since May. Puzzle Quest is the game I have in it and every once in a while I think about playing it, but there are just better games out for other systems right now. I hope this holiday season brings me and my DS closer.

Toys R Us is having a big games clearance if you can find the games there. Big YMMV, but lots of tempting DS games. Castlevania POR, Phoenix Wright, Trace Memory, Metroid Prime Hunters, Polarium - ranging from $11 - $2.5.
Honestly though I've been playing Jeanne D'Arc on my PSP. We miss you in that thread DS.
DS games I'm looking forward to:
Zelda Phantom Hourglass (10/1 - pending reviews, probably will get as long as it's not a unanimous STAY AWAY)
Panzer Tactics (10/1 - pending reviews)
Anno 1701 DS - whenever the developers hurry up and get this localized for the US. It's been out for months in Europe.
It was a very slow DS summer for me. Puzzle Quest was terrific back in March-April, one of the top games of the year. My interest was piqued by Lunar Knights and Etrian Odyssey but I didn't bite on either one and don't feel too badly about it.

It's not a new game, but I played and loved Rocket Slime recently.

I haven't bought anything since Puzzle Quest (which I gave up on -- thanks wandering, levelled monsters), though I have rented a few (Etrian Odyssey, Pokemon, Hotel Dusk, Death Jr...).
Etrian Odyssey isn't bad. It's very much an old-school, throw a party together and do the dungeon crawl. What I found though is that money is a little tight and having to go back to town to rest (to restore magic) and save sucks.
The map thing is fun for about 5 minutes, but then you wish it would draw itself. Being able to add notes and such is nice but I don't understand why I need to see it on the touch screen the whole time (especially when I'm selling 30 useless drops one by one).

I was thinking about getting a DS to play Warhammer 40k squad command. Though it is also on the psp too. So I might just wait, and see what deals they have during the coming holidays to decide between the DS/PSP.
I asked myself yesterday what the hell I could look forward to on DS and was a little disappointed to find that the closest game I would be interested in getting in FFXII: Revenenant Wings sometime mid-Novermber. The last DS game I bought was Pokemon Diamond which was rather quickly sold off. Before that I bought...Electroplankton? Jesus! That was the beginning of '06!

There's a Zelda game coming out soon too.

See. That's what I'm feeling. I looked at the shelf in my local game shop yesterday and all I saw was Nintendogs (I love the game, but it would last me all of 2 weeks again) and then stuff like Puzzle League, Picross, etc. Long term Zelda looks cool and FFXII looks mildly interesting. Otherwise Pokemon can be had on the GBA. I don't know.
I'm looking at what's out there and honestly the PSP looks better right now. I feel you, Scaphism. The game you mentioned really interests me. Unfortunately it requires the purchase of a system and memory card. An investment much larger than a used DS. But yeah, it's getting better titles currently, IMHO. Between Jeanne D'Arc, Disgaea coming out soon, FFT, etc. the PSP is indeed looking good.

There's a DS New York Times Crossword game that I've been playing obsessively. It's the only game I've really had time for these days, since work has gotten so busy and I've been traveling a lot. Nothing like a good crossword to relax the mind.

I'm playing a lot of Planet Puzzle League which is most awesome. I'm still plugging away at Cheating Basta...err...Puzzle Quest and the second Phoenix Wright, though I have to budget time for those novel reading sessions. I can't wait for Contra 4.

Just to flirt with the idea:
I was looking for a PSP back in March before the price dropped from $200 to $170. Back then it was possible to get a used PSP with a 1-2 gig memory stick and maybe a game or two I was interested in off of Craigslist for around $150-170.
Post price-drop and after the new models come out this month there will very likely be a slew of people looking to offload the older model PSPs. If you're really tempted I would estimate you could snag one for ~$120 with a memory card. And 4 gig memory cards are under $50 now, I saw one advertised for $35 the other day.
Pre-edit insertion: A quick check and that estimate holds out in my area.
$100 PSP
That's $100 for a PSP, 4 gig memory stick, playgear case, and hot shots golf. That's the low end of prices being offered here but it's still there.

You really want to get me playing Jeanne D'Arc, apparently.

Nothing on mine, I sold my DS Lite (my wife still has one, so when something good comes out, I can still play it) and used the money for the new PSP.

We few, we fickle few of no allegiance in the handheld market.
I cannot explain the DS craze. I could explain DS enthusiasm, but the mania in their sustained sales numbers astounds me.
The DS has a very good - excellent even - back catalog of games. But so many of these people must have owned GBAs or DSphats that they should have played the back catalog already. And for those who haven't, companies very rarely re-release an old handheld game, so it can be difficult to find a copy of a game you're interested in (like Tactics Ogre or Zelda: Minish Cap for me).
If it were me in your shoes, I'd set a date when to buy the system (~1 month), budget some money for it, and make a list of which games I'd like to play. By the time decision time comes around you can compare which games you still want to play after the initial anticipation has toned down some. A PSP will likely be a bit more expensive but I don't think it's so much that it would take it out of the running.
I imagine this would be a no-brainer decision if I had a group of friends to play local wi-fi games with. I'd adopt their system of choice. But I don't. Not sure if it's any different for you.

Yeah, no one locally to play with. So thus the 360 is firmly entrenched as my #1 system, never to be sold, traded or otherwise leave my home. You can write that down.
I'd like a portable system, but it's tough for me. The GBA is well worn ground for me as it was my sole game system for almost 5 years. I've played everything for it worth playing it and I've played those games multiple times through. My game of choice for the GBA would be Tactics Ogre, maybe Fire Emblem or Minish Cap. But I've already beaten those games multiple times already.
So I see the sale numbers for the DS and thus lift my head up from my 360 long enough to see what's going on in the DS world. And I discover that there is cool stuff, but mostly more of the same stuff that was here when I sold my DS.
Anyway, the problem with making a list of games to help me decide is that there is another factor for me. Time. I don't play my DS at home, really. When I'm home I'm online playing APF 2k8, NBA 2k7, Carcassonne, Catan or soon Halo 3. Now my wife is playing Carcassonne (and hopefully soon Al Hambra) and wants to play frequently. So it would really just be for my 15 minute train ride. That's where my lean goes towards the DS. I can get a game up and running on the DS and sleep it over weeks much easier with a DS than I can with a PSP. Plus the kinds of games I'd dig for the PSP are all Strat/RPGs, which are rarely short.

This is why you need a DS:
From PAX.

A worms game just came out for the DS and its supposed to be excellent.
Shelter 1-minute atmospheric teaser.
Dude, don't even get me started on PAX. I felt like such a chump walking around PAX. All these people lounging around playing WiFi games, chatting, etc. The Pink Godzilla Games stand mocking me... This is part of what started me thinking about it again, honestly. Being amongst tens of thousands of gamers, most of whom had a DS. Makes me think it's worth the $80 for a used one, even if I only use it for Zelda and a random puzzle game here and there. At least I'll have it for plane flights and PAX next year.

All this PSP love in a DS thread... I think I'm in bizarro world
Not to jump on the bandwagon, but I'm also in the same boat as DSG... the last game I bought was Yoshi's Island 2, and I haven't turned mine on in 6 months except to test my DS Opera browser that I bought for $14 at the goodwill
I thought Brain Age 1 was boring after 2-3 days, so the second one holds no interest... Pokemon? Nah. I guess ZELDA is on my list, but I'm still wary of the touch control scheme... Final Fantasy Tactics Advance 2, FFXII (although I still haven't purchased FFIII yet) maybe Panzer Tactics... I still DO wan't Clubhouse Games, but I can't find it used ($35 is just too much to pay for these kinds of games). Good god, I have absolutely no interest in "jamming" with the dirty inbred offspring of grunge hippies (see "Jam Session" ads on IGN.com). I am a big Harvest Moon dork, so "Rune Factory" holds some interest. IGN UK is gushing over the new "sonic rush adventure," but the first DS sonic game didn't really work for me.
