Indie (Free!) Game Alert: Knytt Stories
Friday, September 7th, 2007 - 1:16am
Knytt Stories in one sentence? It's sixty percent pacifist Metroid in a zen garden reminiscent visually of Cave Story will enough charm that even Jules might consider it fit for consumption.
You will play it.
It comes with a level editor, the ability to share levels, and looks to be somehow related to another similiar game by the same creator, but I felt it necessary to share before messing with those. Also, Knytt climbs walls like a praire dog runs. I find this amusing.
You will play it.

Any idea how complex the level editor is? If it's fairly simply, I may have to try making my own sadistically challenging levels. If there's any coding involved at all, I'm screwed in that respect.

Did you see this on Lost Garden? If not, you should check out the recent write up of it. I bookmarked it, but have not yet had a chance to check it out.

This is like Castlevania on crack cocaine!
In Ultima Online I used to poison hams and leave them on the ground in cities for people to pick up and eat. I can't believe how many people thought street ham was a good thing to eat. -Elliottx
Okay, just played through the main story from beginning to end. Took me less than an hour, as it was fairly easy (especially compared to the other games this guy has done). It was fun though.
I shall now attempt to make my own level now, but who knows how long that might take...

I'm dying to hear what they'll say about it in the next Arsecast

I poked around the level editor and it looked all graphical to me.
Didn't see any place for code and the stuff that was there appeared to be really simple (from a game making standpoint).

I've spent an hour or two playing around with the level editor and it's really good. It is all graphical, and once you get the hang of the layering system it's a piece of cake:
1 and 2 are background detail layers
3 is the physical layer -- platforms and walls
4-7 are foreground detail layers, which can also contain entities -- environment effects, monsters, powerups, etc.
You could knock something playable together fairly quickly. The trick is coming up with some decent puzzles and making it look pretty
