Apple is making their announcements right now.
The basics:

- New iPod Touch. Basically the iPhone, without the phone.

-- Touchscreen interface

-- Includes wireless music purchasing (Mobile iTunes)
-- iPhone gets Mobile iTunes as well
-- You can purchase music that's playing at Starbucks, if you're at Starbucks.
Recap: iPod Shuffle ($79 - 1 GB), iPod Nano ($149 - 4 GB, $199 - 8GB), iPod Classic, ($249 - 80 GB, $349 - 160 GB), iPod Touch, ($299 - 8 GB, $399 - 16 GB), and iPhone ($399 - 8 GB)
I was really hyped about the iPod Touch news, as I was looking to replace my 40 GB iPod Photo with one of those, but I can't get by the 16 GB size. I really, really want the iPod Touch, but with an 80 GB hard drive. Now I'm bummed. ![]()

Wowza. Some pretty big announcements.
$200 price drop on the iPhone already? Luckily I returned mine after a couple of days. I really liked it so I think I'm going to buy back in.
I could use a 16gb model though like the iPod touch.
Hmm, now I have to figure out a way of talking myself into getting the iPod Touch...

Who the Hell could possible have 160GB of content they need to take on the road?! Maybe it's just me but I don't need to carry my entire DVD collection with me.

I think if/when I make my next change I'll be going with the Ipod "Classic."
At 30hour battery life and 160gb for $350 sounds mighty tasty to me. Only thing I'm not looking forward to is using iTunes again.
[edit] @PA I tend to use my mp3 player as a portable hard drive.

Does the new video nano play Divx?
Ow, they dropped the price that much on the iPhone? *whimper*
iPod Touch... nice! I'll probably get it, since I think it's time to upgrade... I'm still using the 20GB iPod since they were first released. Although 8/16GB only... that is a bit of letdown. I might wait until they will bump the capacity... which they will do eventually.

the iPod touch was all I could ever dream of... and then they fricking loaded it with flash memory. 8/16 GB for a widescreen video player? What the heck is the point? I already have over 20GB of video content on my 5th gen iPod video.
I am so torn... I wanted all the features of the Touch... contacts, wifi, web browsing, calendar, huge screen... and they they had to screw it all up. I guess the battery life probably wouldn't allow an HD, but day-am. So close, yet so far.
The "classic" is the best bargain in digital audio right now... 80GB for $249? New interface? Free games? Great, great deal. Just not enough of a change for me.

It's probably because while you can keep making flash smaller, it's very hard to shrink a rotating hard drive while keeping enough surface area on the disc to make it useful and still make it reliable enough for a mobile device. Aren't touch screens are also thicker than plain displays?
Random thought: the new Nano looks like it's ripping off something from Creative Labs, anyone else think it's ugly as sin?
I just have to keep reminding myself that the iPhone's lack of 3G and inability to sync with Lotus Notes is a deal breaker.

I still wait for the 80 GB iPhone with 3G and a true SDK.

The 16GB iPod touch might be the thing required to convert me to the Apple crowd when it comes to a music player.
But only once someone gets it so that you can use things other than iTunes on it.

I'm not sure about newer ipods, but I'm able to use winamp to load up my ipod shuffle.
Or, if you are able to use a real OS, Amarok is always wonderful ;p

A 40GB iPod Touch would be really really tempting. Maybe even a 20GB.

I'm not one to get the larger sizes, seeing as how I get my MP3 players for features. But I think I'm going to have to get the 16gb iPod Touch. Even I will run into storage issues with only 8gb.

In my defense, my CD collection is sitting at around 470 or so and being able to have it at the touch of a button would be... heaven.
On top of that, I plan on using it as another way to back up all my important data. Photos, documents, etc.

Since I've been using a 2GB 1st Gen Nano, I think it's time to upgrade. The iPod Touch 8 GB would be perfect for me. Now to drop some not-so-subtle hints to the wife about what I want for Christmas.

I love my iPod nano, but for anyone who doesn't like iTunes and can't use Amarok so is avoiding the Touch, there's always the iRiver Clix. The 4gb is 189.99 and the upcoming 8gb is 249.99.
I like my tiny nano, it's a shame they'll be phased out for the fat ones.
"YOU SPOIL, YOU GET SPOILED! AAAAHAHAHAHAHA!"
Yeah, we got one for my dad, and it's a blast. I'd hate to see it phased out.

Well I pre-ordered my 8gb iPod Touch. I couldn't rationalize paying 100 more bucks when I really just want the web features. Instead I think I'm going to keep my Zune, so that I do have a player with some storage.

so that threw me off a bit. i'm interested in using the iPod Touch as a mid-capacity media player while replacing my PDA (an old Palm Tungsten E) with it's address book and calendar function, which were all I really used the PDA for anyway. the web browser is just icing on the cake. i figured i can check (and send?) my gmail on Safari.
Does this sound reasonable? later on would I be able to add some of the non-phone related apps that iPhone has, like weather, notepad, maybe a 3rd party app here or there?

The iPod touch looks fantastic! I can only hope that people open it up as quickly as the iPhone, which should be simple seeing as how it basically is an iPhone without the phone part. A multi-tasking music, web-browsing, IMing device that small would be heaven.

Asz, I gotta tell you, the iPhone is sure sweet in the front pocket of your jeans ... you can barely tell it's there. It's a very good form factor.
Old price buyers of the iPhone will get a $100 Apple credit to ease their consternation.
Unless I'm mistaken, none of them come with a stylus since they're designed around finger pointing. Is that really accurate enough to do these kinds of things? Even with a stylus, on the Nokia N800 some of the buttons in Google Reader are hit-or-miss.
Could just be my caffeine addled hands, though.

If i'm not mistaken, the iPhone lacks Wifi. No wifi is a deal breaker for me. Data plans are a no-go as well, I talk so little on the phone that I simply use pre-paid and wind up spending $10~ a month in minutes. I wouldn't be willing to fork over $20-30 a month for data.
Not sure to be honest. I've always wanted a tiny wireless device to do basic internet "work" on though. I've attempted to use the PSP like this before but a bad web browser, and pretty poor memory management has always left me in the cold. As I said as well, once this thing gets popped open and 3rd party apps starting floating around I can't see myself resisting.

One thing I don't understand is why the people who've already bought iPhone are complaining that the price cuts happened "too soon". As though Apple has hurt their feelings somehow. This is quite ridiculous.
