Aviation Adventurer Steve Fossett missing
Tuesday, September 4th, 2007 - 2:49pm
That's a lot of mountainous terrain to search through, especially since he didn't file a flight plan.

I hope they find him alive and well. He is a true aviation pioneer.

In a plane that small he should have been able to land safely if his engine went out, depending on the terrain in the area. It sounds like he was just going to fly out a little bit and do some aerobatics, probably within 10 miles or less of the airport. I'm surprised they haven't found the aircraft yet.
He was apparently scoping out a place to break the land speed record, so my guess is it'd be pretty flat ground. That said, "western Nevada" is a pretty big area to search.

That's an odd plane to take for a three hour scouting flight in the west. It's pretty slow and not something you'd expect a guy to want to cruise around in over big distances. And not taking a radio, safety gear, and water on any flight across the desert in a small aircraft is crazy. I just assumed that he was going out unprepared because he was going to fly out only a few miles and do some loops and stuff.
One of the links I saw said that he had four tanks of gas with him... and a MeFi commenter observed that if he wanted to disappear himself, that would be just about the perfect way. Four tanks of gas, and head for the border.
I figured he was actually going to create an Objectivist utopia in some hidden valley of the Rockies. Give it a few years before you try and show up... and bring a monkey wrench.

For those that are interested, you can now join in the search for Steve Fossett from your computer. Review satellite imagery at Amazon's Mechanical Turk here.

Cool idea. I reviewed 100 photos. But I didn't find the plane.
Don't know if this is Steve's aircraft, but it definitely looks like a plane on the ground in the search area.
38°28'55.73"N
119°24'18.15"W
It's not in the old satellite imagery either.
EDIT: Sizes match pretty close to the dimensions of the aircraft Steve was flying. I've notified the Amazon people.

You could end up being famous, Bennard.

They found something like six wrecks in the hills while searching for him. Looks like if you're only moderately wealthy the NTSB won't even bother. Then again, it is Nevada and they could all be drug planes.

An update. If that really was his stuff, then the plane wreck should be near by.

I bet he got abducted by aliens. They probably took the wreckage too.

Well, they've supposedly found the wreckage of the plane now.
Also, they've concluded that the plane made a head-on impact into the mountains, and was pretty thoroughly destroyed. No remains have been found.

Maybe a mid-flight heart attack. It's nice that this thread got rezzed, because I completely forgot that I had looked at those hundred satellite photos for his plane on that Amazon deal.
I retract my theory.

As Quintin_Stone's link says, they have now found some remains.
An AP report says that:
The article does say that they have found enough for DNA testing.
