Scared by BioShock....

I downloaded the demo and while it definately showed the potential to be just about the most awesome thing ever I was so scared after about ten minutes I had to turn it off.

But everyone loves it and is talking of nothing else.

As such, I have been thinking of buying it for about a week. Is buying and playing this game worth the tradeoff in potentially not sleeping?

Done deal. Tommorrow when I grab Monster Hunter Freedom 2 it comes with a side order of BioShock.

I think i must be desensitised to scary stuff... i don't think i've been scared by a game since AvP2.... i reckon i must compartmentalise my fear or shock in order to better deal with the situation...

Yes, with the caveat that the copy protection is very nasty, which may inspire you to wait awhile until it's broken or patched out.

Overall, I found it much less frightening than System Shock 2.

I seem to only get really spooked when I play games on the PC (F.E.A.R., Doom 3, etc.) Bioshock on the 360 is creepy but I rarely jumped.

Lag used to be a lot worse back in the day. Hell, it took Jesus 3 days to respawn.

Agreed, mainly because I was rarely without means for combat. In System Shock 2, I was always keenly aware of exactly how many bullets I had, and knowing I was low and hearing psychic monkey chirps echoing through the hallways was always enough to bring the panic factor to 10.

Although there was a similar type of "combat dread" in BioShock, it wasn't at the same "OMFG go away and leave me alone PLEASE!" level of System Shock 2.

It's hard to be afraid when you're holding a flamethrower.

Indeed. Someone had a change of heart, I guess. Or maybe BioShock scared them into opening it again.
