skate.

Evil EA, me hatey, etc, etc, etc, I know.
The demo's up on XBL though, and it's slick-ass. It already feels like a fantastic alternative to the TH series. EA still won't see a penny of my money personally, but I'll make sure I get to try this one out.

It's almost too realistic to me, I don't know enough about skateboarding to really appreciate not having time to do 15 tricks in one shot. I do appreciate what they're trying to do, though.
Yeah, it's scary. I'm staring into the abyss right now, and it's staring into me, which I think is kind of a dick move on the abyss's part. - Nyles
All I have to add.
I generated a virtual world in the toilet bowl this morning.

I wonder if your shoes can fly off in skate.
I for one have been playing Tony Hawk for a while and everything has become so second nature it's just exciting to play a skating game where I have to learn again. Learning is the fun part and Tony Hawk is just all reflex for the veteran players at this point.

My hands still sweat watching that clip.
Tried skate demo. Enjoyed skate demo. Look forward to colliding with people mid-air (accidentally, of course) in retail version.

Anyone? There's a demo for this and for Tony Hawk's Proving Ground out on XBL, and while the new "Nail the Grab" stuff is kind of fun, i'll be honest, the idea of clearing a tough gap by just nailing a kickflip appeals to me more than 65,000 points of grinding and manuals. This isn't to say that THPG isn't the best in the series, it is, but there's something about skate. that just seems more fun.

Got it. I think what I love most is the ability to session skate online, and just go. No concerns, no challenges, just do what the title suggests.

I had it from Gamefly for about a week. It was entertaining for a few hours but at some point it just degenerated into me throwing myself off a bridge over and over for about an hour, watching the entertaining bone crunches (and unlocking a playable skeleton figure in the process)
The mechanics are interesting but the game really isnt. The world is nice but the goals suck. the S.K.A.T.E. event is the worst. Against a good pro, there's basically no strategy, you just keep throwing out tricks and hope they miss them. They're as likely to miss a kickflip as they are to miss a 720 double inverted super lucky hooplejump
Skate is an experiment or a tech demo. Tony Hawk is a game and it's never forgotten that.

Thread necromancy, I know, but I'm really into this game right now. I don't get when people call something a "tech demo". skate feels like real skating. It's beautiful. It's EA's love letter to skateboarding. It just looks right, plays right, feels right. It's lack of "gameiness" is what I love about it. I can log on and just randomly free skate for hours and be happy. I skate in real life, but I can't do tricks like in this game. So it's like a fun extension of what I get to do in real life. Things I wouldn't do.
One of the more overlooked games from 2007, IMHO. I think mainly because it was less game and more immersive experience. I don't think that's a bad thing. Rock Band is more an immersive experience than a game. I play on Easy and really don't care. I don't play it for the game aspect. I play it to pretend I'm in a band and it works. I play skate to pretend I can do a kickflip and it works.

I dig the game. I have it out from Gamefly right now and am contemplating paying the $33 to keep it but I'm guessing a sequel will be coming out sooner than later.

I thought it was a great game that captured the "feel" of skating more than anything else. Tony Hawk has basically become a parody of itself at this point so Skate was a welcome change to the genre. While the s.k.a.t.e challenges were kind of silly and the online play is boring, the game overall is great. Hell, I ended up buying it twice ( ps3 originally, returned it for the 360 version when I realized it was crap ).

Anyone still have this? I feel like it'd be fun to have 2-3 people in for a GWJ skate night.

I still have it. One of my favorite games. I'd love to play some time. I get on once in a while and freeskate, actually. It's my most relaxing game next to Viva Pinata.

Any one paying attention to options of sequals for this?
I never picked this one up but allways loved the Skating game genre.
I bet I can get it on the cheap though.

skate is $40 now new. I'd say pick up skate while you still can. While you can still find it. EA will move on, as they always do, and some of the things I've heard about skate 2 aren't encouraging. So I definitely want to be owning the original and I think you'd love this one. A key thing is if you love the skating game genre or if you actually love skating on some level. Because at its core skate is a more simulation than Tony Hawk, but it's beautiful. It's beautiful visually. It's beautiful in terms of how the game is structured. It's a love letter to those of us who skate or have skated before.

Agreed. skate. and the TH series are as far away from each other as you can imagine. What I loved about it was the ability to just hop online, find a freeskate session, and tool around. You're not neccessarily trying to do a backflip Christ Air 720 to a Smith grind to a double heelflip to a nollie pop-shove it to a manual and so on into insanity. skate. can just be about managing to fliptrick to a platform, doing a manual on said platform, and doing a fliptrick off.

Nice! I am picking this up tonight on the way home.

Although you can do some pretty crazy stuff. One of my favorite things to do (we'll have to do this, Goodjer nation, all 3 of us) is to drop into a Freeskate sessions at the X-Games stadium. All kinds of fun ramps and jumps.

Well, if either of you ever see me around, drop me a line, i'll probably be up for a game. I'll be tooling around for a little while tonight too.
