August 27th - August 31st

Do you remember a few weeks ago when there wasn't even a passably decent game to artificially crown Game of the Week. How our wallets lounged lavishly and without fear in our back pockets, unaware the coming onslaught that would seek to disembowel them and claim their valuable contents like a Little Sister harvesting precious Adam. Ok, I've been playing way too much Bioshock.

Back to this week. I honestly have no clear idea whether snubbing Metroid Prime 3 as game of the week will be a contentious move, though historically speaking I'm fairly confident that someone will complain. I am sorely tempted to give the nod to Stuntman: Ignition which put forth a rather impressive demo some weeks back, and looks to rebuild on a problematic Playstation 2 game, and if that weren't enough I'm assured by those who have played the demo that Stranglehold shows promise. If that weren't enough there is also a Medieval II expansion, Tiger Woods, Blue Dragon and Moto GP. With all that said, the nod for Game of the Week goes to Warhawk which looks to bring online play on the PS3 alive at last.

NBC's Heroes Season 1 soars onto DVD this week with compelling enough features to warrant at least a spot on the Netflix queue if not an outright buy. More DVDs here.

A wasted opportunity for a Game of the Week I think. I respect you had to make a decision, but I think there mustve been a heavy hitter more worthy, whether it was a metroid, JRPG or John-Woo thingamajigee(ok so maybe that was delayed as I see with folks with faster 'post'ing reflexes). I'll be curious to see how the Warhawk reviews/impressions play out.

I trust the GWJ inner circle, so despite my malcontent... I'll keep an open mind...

Run Elysium! There's a horde of angry gamers coming behind me, and they're after YOU!

Some interesting games this week, but I think I'll pass on Garfield's Nightmare. They destroyed a great old ride at the local amusement park (Kennywood) and put in an abomination called Garfield's Nightmare. If the game is anything like the ride, expect a truly lousy experience for young and old alike.

Yes let's eschew Metroid Prime 3, a sequel to a popular series that's on a platform that everyone and their mother has, and instead replace it with Warhawk, a game thats primary appeal is multiplayer on a platform that about 3 people have.

Face it, you're just trying to trick people into playing multiplayer with you

Oh no! The Sony Defense Force finally succeeded in bribing Elysium! We've lost him!

Seriously though... Warhawk? That's going to be an even bigger flop than Chromehounds was. I would consider any of the other games you mentioned (not the actual list though) to be a bigger title for game of the week than Warhawk.

I think it is a major snub to Metroid Prime 3. It is reviewing very well (though, I'm not sure if you saw the review prior to your selection), I think it was on another platform, it would have recieved game of the week.

Put in another vote for Metroid here. I'm really looking forward to it for some reason even though I never finished either of the Primes on GC (preordered even) . It's not that I didn't enjoy them, but after taking a break I completely forgot what I was doing or where I was and never really got back on track.

Well I am in 100% agreement with ol' Gruffness, Warhawk is by far the game I'm most interested in this week.

Though MP3 does effectively double the "Wii games I want" total, which is good.

But Warhawk will bring my PS3 games owned total to 1.

Well isn't that wonderfully condescending. Of course, most of us who have been talking about wanting Warhawk have already played all the BF2 we're ever going to play, but don't let that stop ya.

Another vote for MP3. I'm disappointed that they didn't include any MP capabilities, but I'll take it for what it is. Between this and Bioshock we've had two superb single player FPS's released in the space of a week. *Bliss*

That has nothing to do with the platform. Now, what I might do is pick Warhawk over Bioshock 3 if all indications suggested it was going to be exactly like Bioshock 1 and 2 except you could play it with a new controller.

Except the comment had absolutely nothing to do with MP.

Also, MP isn't BioShock, if for no other reason than there's been an 8 year wait between System Shock 2 and BioShock, while MP games have been popping out pretty regularly now.

because WarHawk wont last the test of time. After playing the beta i wasn't that worried that i wouldn't be playing it again. I'm glad it's coming out because it's about time the PS3 had a decent game, but it's something that most people will be done with a few months for now and people are still going to be talking about how great Bioshock is.

I love the Nintendo faithful. I honestly do, and they've got momentum on their side right now. Makes the Sony Defense Force look like the keystone cops.

As to picking Warhawk over MP3, I calls em as I sees em. This is the third MP game in five years, not including the effort on the DS, and that sort of over-saturation never fails to turn me off, and ironically on the heels of such an outstanding original game last week my tolerance for that kind of repetition is even lower. Nintendo's got a ton going for it, and there're a lot of games for the Wii that will make my GotW call, but MP3 ain't one of em.

Now, let the bones roll as they may. I've already started this flammable effigy for you guys. Who wants paper mache?!

Eh I'm just drumming up some discussion like the article does. People disagree.

I just honestly think folks looking at a PS3 for something like Warhawk would be better served with a pc and Battlefield 2. I'm skeptical that they can pull off a better mp 'sandbox' game. It's just my hunch that's all. Hence my comment. ON the other hand I am intrigued to see how Warhawk is reviewed.

And some of the reasons I have that hunch is that something like Battlefield 2 has a few features that can't be duplicated on today's consoles. I don't think you'll see the same size maps and servers as you do in BF2. Ditto with other features like the CommRose. And with a decent sub $200 (a 8600gt for ~$100 would be good too) vid card you can play it at 1600x1200 resolution. And it will look pretty dam good. Just an observation. The game has also gone through a few patches and iterations and there's alot there that's been 'proven' to be fun. There's also quite a large group of people playing the game at all times along with the BF2142 which usually helps you get a game going at anytime of the day.

Anyway, like everyone else with an opinion, I could be way offbase here. Warhawk maybe will bring some sweet features to the table and have the best gameplay ever. I certainly will reverse course and become intrigued if the game exceeds my expectations.

I love the anti-Nintendo faithful. I too call 'em like I see 'em.

Review score wise, they're in the same ball park. Both are dripping with atmosphere. I'm not saying that MP3 is a better game, but I don't think it's fair to say that it's a weaker game, either.

MP3 isn't exactly the same as 1 and 2. It features high production values, a deeper and better presented story, and brand new control scheme that many are saying is the best way to play a shooter on a console. I think that is kind of a big deal.

I don't think there is a need to be snide to any game. It's not my cup of tea.

I think it's safe to say that if MP3 was coming out on the 360 or the PS3, it would have been GOTW. I'm not calling bias or people are out to get Nintendo or anything. It's just that more people own the 360 (and I'm not sure on the PS3) who post on this site. The live effect would also take place, with people seeing their friends on a game and want to "jump in".

Elysium, I'm going to hold you to this when Halo 3 is released in a few weeks. Because, it fits the same criteria as MP3.

I think you're missing the point on Warhawk. The point isn't to try and out-Battlefield the Battlefield games. It's probably not the "same size maps" (which isn't a negative, because bigger != better).

It's a pick-up-and-play game with, from all previews and game videos, more steady action and less downtime than Battlefield. The air combat is also not similar to Battlefield in any way. It's like Crimson Skies with lots of planes in the air, not just one jet per side patrolling and repeatedly bomb-dropping.
