Gaming "Regret?"
Anyone ever regret not playing a game, or even worse, a few years worth of games?
My story is I bought a Gamecube on launch day as I'd really enjoyed the N64. But, you all know how the Gamecube turned out. I didn't really want to shell out a few hundred more for another console so I was left with a almost game-less console and a mid-range (at best) PC.
I never got the chance to play cool stuff like Final Fantasy, God of War, Halo (except for the drunken, first-year dorm slugging matches). Of course, I was instead outside, socializing and all those other normal things but, dude... I heard Kratos killed pretty gratuitously. I mean, that's cool!
I finally got around to grabbing a high-end PC in the fall (and it still holds up great) and just recently, a 360, so I've played Oblivion, Total War, Gears and am looking forward to Bioshock. Feels good to have a virtual life again!
I suppose I could go back and buy a now very cheap PS2 and get caught up (as motived by the pile of shame thread), but at heart I just like pretty graphics too much. While great games usually stay pretty good as they get older, I just don't like fussing with clunky controls and blurry graphics.
Reading back, it does seem like an odd topic (and a little too sentimental, does that mean, man card = revoked?), but any thoughts?

My only regret is wasting so much time on crappy battles during Final Fantasy (Insert number). f*ck, 100 hours per game? I'd have learnt a new language! I didn't even like the grind >_<

Not sure what you're looking for. You surely HAVE missed out on many PS2 classics, yet seem unwilling to buy one and play those games. I think you'd be better off just looking forward instead of backwards

Son, if my regrets about games I didn't play could hold a candle to the other regrets in my life, I wouldn't spend my free time drinking and playing video games.

Yeah, agreed.
My only word of wisdom is that just as in love, don't get so wrapped up in one game that you don't play the field.
It is better to have gamed and lost than to have never gamed at all.

I signed up for the rpgcodex at one point. I regret that... though it's more in the periphery than actual gaming.

To clarify, it was just an idle question; I'm sitting here at work with a new project in my lap and no idea of how to start it. So in those situations surfing the web is the usual cure.
There are only 2 games I regret playing: Horizons and World of Warcraft. I neglected too many other things in life during my 2 years with WoW, wasted alot of time that could have been spent -at worst- on games that were more fun.
edit to add: Doug, what did you find wrong with the Gamecube? Aside from the lack of serious shooters, it is still a fine system for the money.

I don't regret gaming as a hobby. I have a life, I go to school, I have many friends, and I have a good full-time job. Sometimes I wish I had more than 10 hours of gaming per week.
Regret missing out on certain games and consoles, though? Sure, but many of them were from a time when I had no sort of income.. and they are too expensive to delve into at this time in my life. I'm looking at you, Neo Geo.
Yet even then we ran like the wind,
whilst our laughter echoed under cerulean skies...
I don't have too many regrets. I have a decent threshold for retro games, if the gameplay holds up where the interface might not. I first played X-Com only a few years ago.
I do kind of regret missing out entirely on the Might & Magic and Heroes of M&M series. Somehow all my brothers played them and yet they was completely off my radar. They tell me they're good games.

I must not have any gaming regrets, because I waste an inordinate amount of time beating 8-bit nintendo games on an emulator that I already beat six dozen times back in the eighties.
I'm not sure why. I think it's some sort of disorder. I'm taking occasional breaks from Bioshock to play FFI. It's probably the worst video game ever. But I love it. I love the awful graphics. The awful music. The awful engrish translations and the fact that I can only give my characters four-letter names. I love the way that three ghouls can paralyze and defeat my entire party that's like 10 levels higher than they are (which, given that they knock off about 1 HP of damage per roll, usually takes about 45 minutes.) I even love the way it says "Ineffective" when your characters blindly execute attacks against monsters that no longer exist, like little 2-D lemmings charging off a digital cliff.
Great stuff.

Gaming regrets? I regret having purchased Black & White as a preorder (or at all). I regret spending hundreds of hours per year on MMOs until about two years ago. I regret following the hype for the Next Great Thing (which I thankfully no longer do) only to find that my tastes are not the same as the majority. That's for starters.

Ultima. All of them.
I got my first PC the year Ultima VII came out, but at that time I didn't give a damn about RPGs. Played boring sims instead
Actually, I was wondering if they hold up? I was reading you can get VII to work under XP using Exult.
P.S.: My first post! On any forum ever, actually. Yes, I'm a total n00b...

I kinda regret not getting in to the Devil May Cry series earlier. I just rented 3 this last weekend and its a solid game. How did I miss that? For me, its all a matter of patience. Ever since my parents refused to buy me a SuperNintendo because we had a "perfectly good nintendo" already, I've had to buy my own systems. So I've gotten used to the idea that it might take some time get a certain game or system. The only real regret I have is that I sold my original Nintendo and 7 games to a friend for a measly $80.

I *think* Ultima 7 still holds up, but that may be my nostalgia talking. I tried it a couple of years ago. Obviously it's nothing close to the sort of graphics we have now, at most it's on a GBA graphics level. But the story is cool, and if you can get over some quirks, I think it's still worth it.

I'd recommend giving Lazarus a try as well, since it's Ultima V wrapped in Dungeon Siege clothing. It's not as well written as VII or VII part 2, which are loving awesome in terms of depth, but it's a great way to get introduced to the series.

Well I actually gave Lazarus a hard look. I even installed the thing last year, but was soon put off by the fact that it felt so much like Dungeon Siege... but maybe it was a superficial judgement though. I'm not too worried about it looking GBAesque, as I'm in fact going through a newfound appreciation for 2d and playing Super Mario World and Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance on my DS. What I'm worried about is that it might feel dated gameplay-wise, and to be honest, I'm scared to death by lack of hand-holding that comes with old games. I don't mind complex stuff, but I have few precious hours of gaming in my week so I can't really cope with wasting it trudging around a map looking for something that I don't know what it is or where it might be... so I might be looking at the wrong game
By the way, is VII very long?
P.S.: I LIKE this forum thing!

Thanks for the recommendation, I will. Oh, as it turns out, it's already on my retro list, #7.

Well, the original Ultima V played far, far differently than Dungeon Siege but there's little difference in mechanics between VII and Lazarus. The Black Gate and Serpent Isle were something of a revolution when it came to interface design.

And to you, I say Amen to that, brother, amen.
Sitting here staring at the cursor has made me realize that, indeed, had everything turned out the way 'I wanted it to,' I would still very likely be sitting in front of a monitor anyway.
Well, Cooking Mama didn't help me become a better cook, and Trauma Center certainly didn't help me become a better surgeon. I have the proof of both sitting in my freezer. -- imbiginjapan
I'm not sure if I'd be in front of a monitor, but if everything had gone the way I thought I wanted it to, I'd probably not be in a cubicle right now. This new Tony Hoagland book next to me would already be read through a couple times, and I'd probably have some notion about how much better my book was selling.
I wouldn't be out of coffee, either.

No regrets. For me, it's games/systems I don't have yet, rather than games/systems I missed.
But I'm a freak who plays Rezork on her lunch hour, so being late to the game isn't an issue for me.

BTW, regarding your rpgcodex comment... they really are a bunch of whining lunatics. I regret ever reading their Oblivion review. That raped my innocent anticipation for that game and made me not want to play it. And I would have liked, back when I was pure...
So I guess that's another regret.
Oh, and Civ...
