System built, Vista Installed

Well, last night I finally got enough time to finish putting together my PC. My build was slower than normal because I had to reattach the Northbridge heatsink that had come loose in the packing or shipping process, so I used some sturdier pins to hold it down and cleaned off the thermal pad to replace it with thermal paste.

Everything after that went really smooth, and I have to say that it was the easiest build I've ever done. My pc booted up on the first try and no smoke or strange noises came from it!

I popped in the Vista disc and was very impressed with the quick/easy installation and had my video and sound drivers installed not to mention about 30 windows updates downloaded less than 45 minutes from the time I booted the machine for the first time. Vista seems to boot/reboot quickly, and has a nice look and feel to it. I didn't have time to install any games because it was so late at night when I got started, but I'll update my post with my experiences later.

The system:

  • THERMALTAKE Soprano RS 101 VG7000BNS Mid Tower Case
  • Coolermaster RP-600-PCAR eXtreme Power 600W Power Supply
  • GIGABYTE GA-P35C-DS3R Intel Core 2 Duo (Desktop) Socket 775 1333MHz FSB DDR3 1066MHz ATX Motherboard
  • INTEL Core 2 Duo E6750 2.66GHz FSB1333MHz 4M LGA775 Retail BX80557E6750 Processor
  • OCZ OCZ2P800R22GK 2GB Kit DDR2 PC2-6400 Platinum Revision 2 Dual Channel Memory
  • XFX PVT80GGHD GeForce 8800GTS 320MB XXX DDR3 PCI-Express Video Card w/Dual DVI & HDTV-Out
  • WESTERN DIGITAL WD3200AAKS 320GB USB/eSATA 7200 RPM 16MB Hard Drive

Haha, you are right! I meant to include my system specs, let me get them nice and pretty and I'll edit my original post.

cool stuff Tobyus. I'm curious about your Windows Experience Score. I have a similar system but my memory score is lower than I want it to be.

I believe it was 5.6-5.8 or somewhere in there. I was really tired at the time, so I can't remember what it was exactly. I have no idea what the scores mean or what kind of scale they are on though.

Edit:
________
Nevermind, I scored 5.5, but almost everything was 5.9!

Gaming Update:
I installed Company of Heroes and updated to the latest patch to see the DirectX 10 additions and see how the game performed. With everything cranked up to High and DirectX 10 stuff turned on at 1680x1050 I got 60 max fps and 33 average on the performance test. I tried Ultra where possible, but didn't see a noticeable difference in quality between High and Ultra, though there was a FPS difference, so I turned it back a notch. I started up a Skirmish and could not believe how smooth the game played at those settings. I could zip across the map, rotate, and zoom so quickly, it made the gameplay so much more enjoyable.

I installed Steam and downloaded CS:Source and HL2 but they didn't finish downloading before I went to bed. I also started downloading a certain beta that I recently was invited to but am not allowed to even name...and it ran!

Now I'm trying to decide if I should install every game I plan on playing to test them before my trial period is up...

These are the games I plan on playing in Vista (besides the ones I already named):

  • Oblivion
  • HL2: Episode 1 - Runs fine in Vista! Figured I'd play through it first since it is supposed to be relatively short
  • F.E.A.R
  • Lost Planet (came with the video card, woohoo!)
  • Quake 4 (I just remembered I haven't played through it yet)
  • Battlefield 2
  • X3 (Between this and Oblivion, I may not ever have time for an MMO again, lol)
  • LOTRO

Future:

  • TF2, Portals, EP2
  • Bioshock
  • Starcraft 2 ( If it comes out in the next year or 2, lol)
  • Jumpgate: Evolution (I hope!)
