This goes great with the other HD-DVD rumor I read today.... that of an 360 Ultimate Edition sku with the hd-dvd drive in place of the current dvd drive. Anyone know if there is truth to this?
That's crazy honestly, if anything I would expect them to be both HD-DVD and Blu-ray but not just one
It's all good though but just kind of crazy.

I believe they were pressing dics in both formats, but just dropped BR. At least that's what the article said.

I don't know who I'm supposed to hate more in this fight. Sony is everyone's favorite haterade target, but Toshiba screwed me with a badly made TV and Hollywood executives all deserve to be tossed into the Pacific carrying bags filled with raw meat.
I'm for the small little company with a can-do attitude and big dreams that's pushing a sweet little high-def format of their own. There's one of those in this battle, right?

I wonder how this will go. Things seem to look both up and down for Bluray. On the one hand, the PS3 isn't selling, which is a problem. On the other hand, the PS3 is selling MORE than HD-DVD players, in any format. On the other hand, Bluray is getting a horrible reputation for special features, software bugs and rendering quality. On the other hand, they have a ton of exclusive movies through their Sony Pictures division. On the other hand...
Great Vishnu, that's a lot of hands.

I was totally shocked by this news, since it seemed that Blu-Ray had all the momentum. Very interesting.
Ya, this is pretty big. We're talking all the Friday the 13th, Star Trek, Indiana Jones, and Godfather movies. Not to mention the upcoming release of the Transformers movie.
Yes, but all the players that company makes are coated with a special high definition lead paint.
And they burst into flames after landing on your entertainment center.
... And the combined spinning speed and heat weakens the lead composite, causing the discs to explode into shards that impale everyone in a 20 ft radius...

The thing I want to know is what percent HD content discs - both Blu-Ray and HD-DVD- make up of the overall DVD market? I read something earlier this year that both formats combined still account for less than 1% of all DVD sales. I'm curious as to whether that's picking up speed or not. If it's still true, then this is more like a minor format skirmish than an all out war.
We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea.

The numbers as of a week or so ago was 4.2% of the DVD market.
(I can't find the link so I have nothing to back that up with, but it was in an article from some media research group)

You may find this weird but in Mexico I'm only seeing BluRay stuff... I don't have any hard data but I'd say BluRay is winning here. I haven't even seen HDDVD anywhere posh.

Actually not that long. But the two are not comparable. Jump from VHS to DVD was an immense one. A jump from DVD to HD signal is not that immense. Most people do not notice much of a jump in quality between the latter two, while everybody notices a giant difference between the former two.

I bet there's one in China.
Actually there is. Chinese government is trying to push its own China-exclusive format which is somewhere between DVD and HD-DVD in capacity.
The problem with this is that it'll only matter if Paramount actually remasters their back catalog of films in order to make watching them in HD worthwhile. If they just put out versions based on the old masters, it won't be worth it whether HD-DVD or Blu-Ray. And I can't think of a Paramount movie in the last several years I'd even consider buying on any format. All they put out now is trash comedies.

This means no Indiana Jones on Blu-Ray. Sony is royally f*cked.
Not necessarily... oddly enough in the paramount press release it explicitly states that "Today's announcement does not include films directed by Steven Spielberg as his films are not exclusive to either format." Spielberg is an interesting figure when it comes to the high-def shenanigans... he hasn't explicitly stated whose side he's on.. (if he does have a side). Close Encounters is coming out on Blu-Ray this fall, but when Universal tried to get Jurassic Park out in HD-DVD... they suddenly pulled it from their coming soon list saying "Steven was waiting for larger adoption rates".... and now this odd Paramount statement.
Overall I'm pretty disappointed by this announcement, it looked like we were starting to get a clear leader and what I was hoping the end of the format war... not so now. I don't care who wins, I just want an physical disc based high-def medium... before the "great direct download push" starts...
Nothing like low bit encodes with mediocre sound.. and to top it off you get pay every time you want to watch the same movie.
I bet as Toshiba's "industry partner", Microsoft helped out with a significant portion of the rumored 150 million payout to Paramount/Dreamworks. Who else would love to see the format war continue and hinder mass adoption... "Hey everybody why buy HD-DVD or Blu-Ray when you can just download from us?"
Arg!! On the bright side this announcement forced MGM and Fox to show what they're releasing in the next couple of months.... Holy crap "Red Dawn"! ah the memories!
