I'm in. The Civ I play as doesn't matter. 1-3 turns per day I could probably keep up with (evenings and weekends).

I'm totally in for 1 turn per day. I don't know how I could fit more than that in though except on weekends. Which civ I play doesn't matter to me that much. If given a choice, I'd probably most prefer Japan or Russia.

At one turn/day, wouldn't it take about a year and a half to play the game?

Count me as interested, but seeing as I've only played Civ 4 twice so far (just bought it last weekend), and know very little about how pitboss games work, you may want to skip me.

Yes, it will take more than a year. The silver lining is that, at one turn a day, it will be a year before your lack of skillz is apparent.

I'm for, er, one per day, but let's see if we can do a weekend start and get a bunch in while the game is slow and friendly. After that, of course, it's open season on Swamplandia.

Extremism in the defense of liberty *is* a vice. It has been since the first Crown Loyalist was tarred, feathered and set afire, and it's no better now. It corrupts first the individual, then ultimately the institution it defends.

I'm in. I don't think 18 hour shifts would be good though - the time would keep rotating to a different hour and it would be difficult to keep track of.

I'd be up to try twice a day but I'm not sure how that would work either. If it's possible I'd prefer to play 1 or 2 rounds a day and then get all of us on for ~30 minutes every other weekend or so to play X rounds (10-20 rounds I'd guess).

If no one wins early, a Score/Time victory is triggered after 500 turns. I don't think we'll be playing this game for 1.36 years.
And honestly the early ages fly by - when you only have 1 unit to move, 1 city to build in, and a pretty well-understood early tech path then the decision go quickly. Once you have a bit of an empire, and different builds going in different cities with more units to move around, then rounds may take a bit longer and there's more to think about in between rounds. Right now it's mainly: where do I move my scout/warrior?

Hey, can we use that setting that makes it so you can only trade away techs you discover yourself? Help make teching up more interesting that way.

Good plan Quintin. Assign extra scientist specialists to speed up research.

--------
Now's probably a good time to ask this question:
Are there going to be any "house rules"? Like not rushing a neighbor before they have 2 cities or something.
This is obviously different than a multiplayer game where you're playing with strangers and you play at blazing fast speed to wreck everyone as quickly as possible.

Essentially, everyone is at their most vulnerable early on, and it's no fun to get knocked out of a game early. Later on it's possible to fight a war and lose but still retain parts of your empire and fight the invaders to a stalemate. There are also Vassals and Colonies to explore. So are we going to have a "gentlemen's agreement" or go free-for-all?

I say the best way to moderate that is to put an aggression time limit (like, no wars during the first X turns) or just go free-for-all. If criteria is "no attacking someone until they get their second city", well, I could just make sure my capitol is VERY well established before I expand, then just expand rapidly.

I think this is a noble sentiment but difficult to enact for any civ that peaks early. Do the Babylonians and Zulus really need to sit back and play nice and sacrifice their comparative advantage? We can get around that by picking later-peaking civs but in the test game if we're that worried about it, I guess.

whatever the clock is set to, if everyone does their turn, the clock rolls forward and resets the timer. Therfore I like 24 hours as the game can still go faster if everyone does their turn fast.

I say we don't go for any of those house rules kind of things. If we have barbarians enabled, we already have a need for military, and wiping out neighbors is a perfectly viable strategy. Besides, with the length of time for turns, if someone is being overly aggressive, there is plenty of time to complain about them on the boards, and the Vassal relationship is an option pretty soon into the game.

To reiterate my 18 hour turn preference, 18 hours is plenty of time to take a turn before work, then another later in the day. Queuing up actions takes care of the situations where you can't make it on for your turn, and the 6 hour savings for everyone else add up really fast. That said, 1 turn a day can move faster if everyone takes their turns regularly, too. I'd be on board for some faster turns, just agree on a time/day.

I'm not advocating - I'm just posing the question. It matters if I'm going to pick someone like the Zulu though.

Simply won't work for me. I'm going to be running 14-15 hour days during the week and I won't really be able to fit time in before I start my day to take another Civ turn (I only run my pc in the evening when I'm home and using it).

Well, I plan to play, so your wish is partially granted. I'm not really that good a Civ player, though I have somewhat of a vague idea of what I'm doing. I'm expecting to have a lot of fun regardless!
