Collector's Editions

You guys remember when the second C&C game came out? It was a Big F*cking Deal. Sure the game ended up sucking, but at the time everyone was chomping at the bit for more C&C action with new, updated graphics. Understandably, there was a collector's edition.

Now, every goddamn game has a collector's edition. It's like it's mandatory. What's even worse is that games that are popular enough to warrant a collector's edition seem to be getting TWO or more, different goddamn "tiers" of collecting. The marketing is obvious, get people to spend as much money on your product as you can. It's just getting so ridiculous. That Halo 3 helmet has got to be the only thing I've seen in years that actually even resembles a "collectible," instead of just a crappy-ass bonus "making of" DVD or a CD version of stuff you can download for free. Maybe a cloth map.

They just announced a collector's edition for Hellgate: London. Given, that game is probably going to be awesome. It has a great pedigree. But look at what it really is... the first game, by a new studio, and a new franchise. How many Hellgate collectors can there be out there?

NOTE: This is not a doodle bug.

Somehow I knew, when I clicked on the thread title, that it was going to be a rant about publishers somehow forcing people to spend more money by the simple virtue of providing an alternative edition with extra material for more money.

Damn you publishers and your choice-providing ways! Damn you all!

Where my collector's edition of Joust? Does it come with a golden ostrich statue?

The only collector's edition I have is C&C: Red Alert and that was only because the EB guy pointed out they were selling it at the same price as the regular edition. You're right, most of these things just aren't all that collectible.

I don't know. I love the septim that came with my collector's edition of Oblivion (that's the coin of the realm, in case you haven't played). I guess if I ever really get taken away to Cyrodil I have enough change to make a phone call or something. And the Dark Age of Camelot poster has lasted about 20 times longer than the game did.

But I didn't get the helmet version of Halo 3 because I don't have a cat to wear it. Plus I knew they had people out there on the list at my local gamestore that really really wanted it and they were already over-extended on the preorders for it.

I guess it's all in what you want to pay for.

Don't mind him, he's just upset that there wasn't a collector's edition for Chromehounds (and, ultimately, that Chromehounds was stillborn).

I love when a game gives you a choice of Collectors edition and 99% of the time I will buy the collectors edition

Sometimes there's not anything in it that will make it worthwhile but other times it's a great thing to buy even though I am not the biggest Halo fan, I am probably be buying the Legendary Edition, I will be buying Bioshock Collectors Edition but it does depend on what each Collectors Edition includes.

The Hellgate: London Collector's Edition contains:

* Special Packaging and Art Design
* Hellgate: London Game 2 DVDs
* Bonus Disc containing:
- "Making of Hellgate: London"
- Official Game Soundtrack
* Hellgate: London Map Poster
* 106 page Dark Horse Graphic Novel
* Unique in-game pet – Mantawraith

I just looked at what the Hellgate London Collectors Edition includes

I find that's pretty cool and I will probaly buy that, I especially like the soundtrack being included as well as the in-game pet.

I don't understand the attraction for collector's editions, but then I don't understand the adults who buy stuff like star wars legos and action figures but then never open the boxes to play with them. It's all about what you want to spend your money on.

I have the World of Warcraft, WoW Burning Crusade, Diablo II and Warcraft III Collector's Editions. I have others too, but nothing tops Blizzards, they truly go the extra mile. Full-size hardcover art books fit for any coffee table, cloth maps, prints, soundtrack and cinematic cd/dvds.. yadda yadda.

Don't get mad about CE's, nobody has to buy them. Some of them are complete money grabs (remember the HL2 one Vivendi offered?), but others offer nice extras for folks really interested in the game.

I will admit, I have the Halo 3 Legendary on pre-order and Bioshock LE too. I'm not 100% convinced on Halo 3, but my sons and I have had so much fun with the series, I think my older son would be really thrilled.

Just today I was listening to the World of Warcraft soundtrack on the way into work.
I buy CEs only rarely, but that was a good one.

Man, I remember a time when you used to get cool stuff in the game package as a matter of course.

I still have a little ankh and a coin from two ULTIMA games... And who could forget all that useless crap that came in the Infocom "Hitchhiker's" game? I, personally, couldn't care less about a "making of" DVD, which seems to be what you get most often in these current collector packages.

I can't seem to help but buy the CE edition if it is available. Unless it's insanely priced. I'm still packing my Ultima IX dragon edition. 5 of those boxes could make for a nice house.

I buy CEs and LEs on a case by case basis. I won't pay extra money for items I don't want. Usually, my decision is based on A) the game being awesome and B) what's being offered. I am a huge sucker when it comes to artbooks and soundtracks. Figures and special cases... Not so much. But that's me.

I bought the collectors edition of UT2004 when it first came out just so I could get the game on a dvd and I wanted all the editing tools without having to download them.

Zero, that's where mine is too. Considering the proportion of my time I spend here, it's a pretty good bet.

I have all sorts of random stuff on my desk, though. I'll have more than phone change if that happens. The septim lives between my One Ring and the magic wand (complete with stone frog that's all that's left of the last little marketing twit who annoyed me). It's guarded by my bendy Randall from Monsters Inc and a random pirate.

I've got the Collector's Edition of FFXII. Mainly because it was exactly the same price as the regular version, and me likey the shiny metal case. Haven't even touched the bonus DVD, though I plan to eventually. Still need to actually beat the game, too.

I also have the Limited Edition of Marc Ecko's Getting Up - it was $9.99 at Fred Meyer's. Not a bad game, but not worth much more than I paid for it, I'd say.

Furthermore, I would kill for a Collector's Edition of the Illusion of Gaia trilogy.

My Deluxe Edition of Silent Hunter IV is a great piece of furniture - big metal submarine-like box full of goodies such as ship spotting manual etc. Nice buy. I choose Collector's editions occasionally, when I expect to love the game very much (such as Europa Universalis III, the soundtrack and strategy guide are a nice touch in its Collector's edition) or when it's cheap - Sam & Max Season 1 DVD for just the price of postage and packing is a must for me.

It's not Wandering Toast. Except in TF2, where it usually is.

Collector's Edition? No thanks. I used to BELEIVE in special editions and pushed that sh*t on customers back when I managed a Gamestop but after buying a couple myself and not getting anything worthwhile from the deal (Except from Blizzard) I stopped coughing up the extra dollars. I've bought a couple "Collectors Editions" for the sole fact that they come on DVD and the regular game is on 2 or 3 CDs. I'm tired of swapping discs.

The mentality is probably to treat the CE boxes as toys. The joy comes from handling the shiny boxes and goodies and soaking in the obvious display of quality. I like neat boxes packed with fun stuff. Who doesn't? It's just more trash to throw away later on, really. After a couple of CE boxes, I've moved on to appreciate the elegance of downloadable game services.

Personally, I think some of the CE's bring me back to that moment on a Christmas morning when I opened up Ultima III or IV.... There must be some latent memory of that happy feeling, the smell of freshly opened gaming box, looking at the extras (that used to be standard).. etc etc.

That's a good point as well, I wish it was the regular edition that came with dvd but it seems like CD only still, though at least it's getting more over to release it on dvd as well.
