WoW - Battleground PvP questions
Many of you have probably read accounts I've posted of PvPing that I've been doing in HFP in association with the Daily quest there. Friday night we happened to end up with a party that melted the faces of all comers (me, Cope, Joedeth, and two good public peeps we picked up). The PvP thing had really been clicking with me already, but after that I was dying to get some more.
This weekend I hit the BGs with a certain amount of fervor - thanks, Crazy, for taking me to my first AV!
I did something like 3 AVs, 2 EotSes, and 3 ABs. Or so.
My question to you all is: what am I supposed to do with the honor and various Marks that I'm acquiring? Seems like the gear you can buy is a bit outdated after BC.
It's also a little annoying to me that they got rid of ranks - I never made it above Private before they did. I know some people don't want them to come back, but it seems like everyone I kill is a Sergeant or above. I assume Hordies who kill me are seeing that I'm a Private (for obvious reasons, I don't display the title
). What do they see when they kill someone who didn't PvP at all before they abolished ranks?
I'm assuming that the deal with titles and with the gear is that they wanted to force people to focus on Arenas, which I know I need to hurry up and hit 70 for.
That said, I still plan to play BGs (even though, true to form, the Allies lost all ABs and EoTSes and won all AVs I was in), so what do I do with the Honor and Marks I'm getting from those?

Would be a good idea. I plan to have Logan sit in for me when I am on my honeymoon.

There are plenty of level 70 epics to buy with PVP Honor.. thats what the "tokens" are you get from the various BG's.
Boots, Belts, Bracers, Amulets, Rings, Cloaks, Gems... and Blue (Superior) level PVP Armor.
Arena is for the Purple (Epic) 5 Piece PVP Class sets, and the Epic Weapons.
Ranks are now gone.. you can still display your old highest gained rank prior to BC but now you get your Arena rank at the end of a season.
Aint nothing new about the world order..it's been playing since the day they put George Washington on a quarter

Yeah I am a bit disheartened that they only upgraded the gear to 70 and left the weapons 60 level. I would have loved a lvl 70 GM Bow with its ridiculous < 2.0 AS. I am at work and can't look it up to see what speed it is, but I know it is below 2.0.

Wait until you are 70 for some real nice epic BG rewards:
http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/pvp/rewards-veterans-armor.html
They now cost a certain amount of honor points along with the marks that you are earning.
eh they have blue 70 weapons, or do you mean that theres no epic weapons? pretty sure thats to lure people into arena... other than that gameguru was spot on, theres now lots of 70 epics to blow your honor on. Save em for those. In fact if your not 70, i'd stop at 69 and pvp there for a good while. It'll be more fun, because you'll be stronger than alot of people who wander in, whereas you ding once you'll be fighting people in much better gear and its all uphill till you get some honor. Bank the honor in 60-69 bg's then ding and buy up.
All of the HFP pvp you have been doing....have you found a use for the marks? There are some really nice trinkets avail to buy with those marks or you can save to buy the banners at 5 marks each to increase your rep gain in the hellfire instances.
As for the BG's.....there really is some nice gear avail to use those points on. The Epic pieces have some really nice +stam numbers.
The key to victory is to not suck as bad as the other side.
Crazy - I've bought the incredibly sweet Pally trinket as well as both rings, which I've socketed. The trinket will stay with me for at least soloing, and at least one of the rings will stay on when I'm tanking - in other words, I'm very pleased with the payout.

I have got to get Sunseeker into a good PvP grind, and hopefully even some Arena action. Sounds like fun and something else to do with clan that doesn't even require a huge time-block investment.

I actually dinged 65 this morning before work. I mentioned somewhere that I was a bit burned on questing because of the stupid way rep works in Outland, so I haven't been doing much of it, but PvP of all things has motivated me to level - that and wanting Kara. In the BGs this week I was facing plenty of 69s and even 70s in AV, and I realized that levelling would really improve my performance. So now I'm going to just bear down and quest and to heck with the rep concerns.

Could you see a team with Sun, Az, Krin, Crazy and Cope. Three prot pallies a hunter and a spriest. About the only thing we could guarantee is that our matches would last a long time.
lol, Cope...
I really can't wait to get into some Arena action. The BGs are fun, but a bit frustrating. My experience with EotS this morning was dreadful. It's amazing how fast Alliance is capable of losing. Makes me wonder if the better PvP players don't play Horde. I figure it's a snowball effect, too. The more Horde dominates, the faster they get to the rewards. The more rewards, the more they will dominate. Ugly little cycle for Alliance. Almost makes me want to try a Horde character just to see the better rewards
I did get my 40 AB marks, though. Now I just need another 38 EotS Marks for the two bigger upgrades.
Hopefully, Arena play is a little different.
Count me in anytime anyone wants to do Arena. I know I need to upgrade Sun a lot still, but if it's anything like BGs, you benefit from it win or lose... not to mention the experience/learning & fun.

There's more premade teams on the Horde side than there is Alliance. That's why it seems like we get insta-rolled every time you step in. Except for AV where Alliance tends to be king. Still it ends up with a higher rate of return on tokens on those quick games.

My theory is that all serious PVP players go Horde. I too have thought about starting a horde character just to play PVP. If I was truly serious about PVP I would have a long time ago; and you're right, it is a snowball effect. Sucks for us. There are a lot of horde guilds with pre-made's (i.e. when you see just about everyone is from the same server you can assume they are premade) and I have yet to play on a single pre-made alliance team. It is impossible for an Alliance PUG to complete against a Horde premade.
Having said that, try this on for size: Ten level 70 GWJ Alliance in Warsong Gulch or Arathi Basin. Now that would be fun and I bet we could roll up the Horde working as a team. I tried to start a pvp night before Burning Crusade came out but there just wasn't enough interest. There still isn't. Heck, we can barely keep our 3v3 arena team active. However, if more and more people continue to express interest in PVP I would love to try it again.
I've been lucky enough to played on some of the A-team warlord(alliance equivalent... can't remember the name) groups back before they took the ranks out. Back when Papparazzi and his group was going for it. It's a world changing experience. You have specific jobs to do and and you do it. There's always backup plans to fall back on if things dont go quite right. And if you dont go against a premade... it's a slaughter. Even against some premades it's ugly for them.
Still that's how the whole taint of the ranks came about. You'd have these premade teams on both alliance and horde fighting it out and raping anyone that wasn't organized. When the a-teams would end up facing each other you could end up having 30min-1hr long matches. Which for the guys going for the top rank that SERIOUSLY cuts into their honor/hour ratio. So you'd end up with people jumping on each other Vent servers and working out a back/forth deal on who would win matches and just basically sitting in the base letting the other team win if it was their turn to win. Of course this was back in the day when you would need 200k honor a week to stay up at the top. Now days if you get 20k you're rocking.

There are occasional Alliance pre-mades on our server, but they're far from a common occurrence.
I'm all over an all-GWJ BG team. Gotta hit 70, I know. Well, we could do AV together, I believe, but you can't queue as a group - for the moment, they announced at Blizzcon that's about to change.

We found that if everyone that wants to be in the same AV tries and queues up at the exact same time more often than not you'll end up in the same one. Just have someone do a countdown over vent/ts and everyone hit "join first available".
We've been doing this for awhile now and out of 200+ AV's i've probably only not been in the same one around 4 times or so.
Gamer Tag: Rantyr
Yeah, a guildie and I did the "synchronous queueing" thing for AV last weekend and it worked. I think we even ended up in the same party.

Update: Well, I got into a nice group in EotS and we rolled 4 games in a row. In under an hour, I earned 12 marks and decent honor.
There was two aspects I noticed in those runs, compared to the early morning ones and one I lost in before that...
When I just forgot offense and defense, instead concentrating on healing/cleanse/aura and BoProt, it changed the battles considerably. First, it seemed that healing is a bit weak out there sometimes.. even as a prot paly, I made a difference. Plus, I could wade into the middle of battle, defend (or even divine), and work the healing angle. Only problem I really had was mana consumption. I had to be smart with my mana use. Beyond that... Cohesive play is key, even if it's not well planned. I often aborted what I thought the smart thing to help where I could simply because there is victory in numbers. In the long run, it is better to help a useless foray, in hopes that we moved on to key points, rather than try in vain to hold up against an organized opposing effort. Although, there were quite a number of times where I sacrificed myself (bubble and charge) against key locales just to keep the horde busy trying to bring me down while others faught elsewhere.
I would love to get in on a GWJ BG group. Equally, I would love to be involved in any Arena team we have. Consider me very active when anyone is interested. It would be a very good learning tool being involved with GWJ groups, too, as I could see where I need to shore up my skills, what kind of equipment would work best, etc.
I know I will never be a PvP master (it's fun, but not my focus), and I doubt I will rebuild anytime soon (which would probably be necessary if I wanted to focus on being true PvP), but it's still a nice diversion, allows me to get involved in quick run, and has been fun even when frustrating.

Wow, that is all I can say about Sat night. Crazy and Az invited me to the BGs with them. Considering I had no idea what I was doing I still managed to get 17 kills and several honor tokens. You have to admit there seemed to be no strategy or communication amoung the entire army... Crazy led us to the beacons and we did our best to defend them.
I did 3 tours untill the beer kicked in and I went to bed
(not sure how long the other 2 played). The horde is really good at this stuff or it was just that night.. but most likely my inexperience to fight PvP. I hope to do this again soon.

Dhal - the Horde almost always wins the BGs we did; the Alliance almost always wins one that we did not do.
It was a great time, definitely. Being on Ventrilo really added to the fun for me, too. I gotta get to 70 and take part in some pre-mades.

coming from a primarily horde character, at least in my battlegroup, alliance hammers us alot in WSG. We win some, may go on a streak, but more often than not alliance beats us in WSG. And *ALWAYS* in Alterac Valley. That gives us 2. woopee.
