This is the most important record in all of sports. Baseball, unlike any other game, is a game of history. Bonds should be ashamed of himself but I'm sure he isn't.

I don't like Bonds because he is an asshole. That said, he's a scapegoat on the steroids thing. He's a symptom of a sick MLB, what he did when he did it wasn't even against the rules, and everyone knew it was going on, League officers, coaches, managers, other players, etc. And no one said anything or did anything.
The whole thing makes me rather sad for baseball. But no sadder than the whole "big checkbook = success" paradigm ushered in by Steinbrenner.

Precisely. Bonds is the scapegoat, so much so that MLB and the Federal investigators don't care if anyone else is doing it so long as they can pin everything on Bonds. There's a lot more people who should feel ashamed but rather bury Bonds to cover that shame up. That's the sad part and what I find disgusting in all of this.

They may not have been testing for steroids, but it has always been against MLB rules to use illegal drugs, regardless if you were using them to get high, or to improve your performance. So the y gainst the rules rhetoric is really BS.
I will take it even farther than you, however. I am huge Cardinal fan, and enjoyed the Sosa/McGwire run at 61 HRs. But I, as most every writer and fan following that run, knew that Sosa and McGwire were juiced. And i'm mot just talking about the andro, which was notihg more than a cover for the steroids McGwire was surely using. andro was being used by plenty of high school and college kids to claim that their explosive growth was the reult of that legal drug, rather than the illegal one they were really using.
It doesn't really matter to me if Bonds is a scapegoat or not. Bud Selig is weak for not banning Bonds from the game two years ago. He has the power to do it, and should have done so. Not doing it then is hurting baseball even more now. MLB would be better off if the debate was that MLB went too far getting rid of players uspected of doping. Now MLB will have a HR champion that is not only a doper, but an all-around a-hole as well.
Too bad Griffey never stayed healthy. He would have broke the record and was never a juicer.

5-7 years and A-Rod will hold the record anyways, so who cares? We have a few dark years to mirror the few dark years that created this problem.
True enough and I would rather have A-Rod holding this record, I cannot stand Bonds and I shake my head that he broke this record

Bonds must have missed the memo that only McGwire and Sosa were allowed to take steroids.

Well, say what you will about baseball's approach to the problem, but I for one welcome this step towards the future of an all-juiced athletic system where the pharmacists share equal credit in the various Halls of Fame for their work.

Actually, Bonds got the message of McGwire and Sosa loud and clear. The fans, press, players, coaches, owners, and Selig liked steroids. They just like to pretend they don't know about them. Bonds' problem was he dealt with idiots that got his name in the press. Oh, and he had a history of being a jerk to the very people that cover baseball.

Nope.. but when EVERYONE did wrong.. you can then no longer somehow single out one person as being "wronger" than the others.. so with that he basically leveled the playing field.
I'm glad he will break this record.. I'm sad though that even something as ridiculous as this STILL wont change a damn thing about baseball.
Face it baseball is broke.. and Barry is the LEAST of its problems.
Aint nothing new about the world order..it's been playing since the day they put George Washington on a quarter
Barry has a slim margin of hope. He needs to break the record and then go on injured reserve and then retire with hopefully many many months of extremely low profile. Every HR he hits after he break the record is going to keep his issues in the limelight and keep the wolves circling.
If he keeps playing, it will be a double edged sword. They won't go after him as long as he is filling seats. Yet as I mentioned above, every homer is going to fuel discontent. If he doesn't hit homers, he'll be encouraged to retire.
Being fangoriously devoured by a gelatinous monster.
I think he'll retire after this season. I think the only reason he came back this season and last was for the record.
Which makes it even more petty.
It makes you wonder how a person that devotes their life to a game could ever live with themselves for cheating, let alone take one of the most coveted records in sports.
Say this list out loud: Babe Ruth, Willie Mays, Hank Aaron, Sammy Sosa, Barry Bonds.
Kind of trails off at the end doesn't it? I don't even mind McGwire much because he's so forgettable. But, Bonds is gonna stick like a splinter, whether someone breaks his record or not.

I still think dealing him to the Cubs was one of our best moves ever. It's up there with giving Loaiza to the Yanks for Contreras and cash.

Correction: Bonds hits 756. And what's going to stick in the craw of the Jay Mariottis, Jim Romes, Roger Lodges (and when the f*ck was he a sports authority?) and JohnnyMoJos' of the world is that Hammerin' Hank Aaron (the first) appeared in a taped announcement and, in spite of all the bullsh*t speculation, praised Barry for his achievement on the HiDef Jumbotron thingamajig.
