Shuttle

In case you haven't seen, NASA just lost contact with the Shuttle Columbia over Texas... it is presumed to have blown up during the mid-stage of re-entry.
A quick note to offer my condolensces to the families of the crew, and the people at Johnson Space Centre. Say a prayer for the crew, if that's what you believe in.
It's a great loss for mankind, not just America. Let's hope this doesn't end our already-fading enthusiasm for space exploration...

Trying to shake the sleep from my head out here on the west coast, I was wondering, at first, if they were somehow revisiting the Challenger accident from years ago. Then, I noticed the story was on all of the cable news channels, and heard it was the Columbia.
Very sad...

I''m absolutely torn today.
I found out I''m going to be a first time dad this October at 6:30 this morning - which was amazing, and wonderful - and then the shuttle incident happened only a few hours later. A strange and uncertain day for me indeed. I''ve always had a love affair with the space program, and this is just an awful event.
Naturally my thoughts are with the families of those astronauts.

This is just such a tragedy, no question. Seeing two shuttle disasters in one life is enough for me, and I hope there''s never another.
Some good news on a day of sorrow. Well, I got you beat by a few months so I''ll let you know how it goes. One thing I can say: Just say ""Yes dear"" and stay out of her way..
I hope (and don''t think) that this will end the space program. Too may people have sacrificed their lives in pursuit of the high frontier. To give up would be an insult to them and their families
and to all the people who dedicate their lives to getting us into space.
My deepest condolences go out to the familes and friends of the crew of the Discovery.

The space program combines everything that makes science great, challenge, endeavour and discovery amongst those things. It is no coincidence that they named the shuttles after that, it was a great project that has, apparantly, now come to an end.

17 people have died associated with manned flight in the US Space Program. 17. That''s with all of the Apollo flights, Shuttle flights, et al, almost 40 years worth. That''s a PHENOMENAL rate; on contrast, 122 people die per day on our nation''s highways. I hope the exact opposite of you, KegBoy, I hope that this disaster spurs Congress to fund the Space Program with the money they need, no longer forcing NASA to cut corners and outsource critical work.
