Subtitle : Holy sh*t that could have been me...

I was originally going to switch shifts with a coworker tonight, and very well could have been going over that stretch of 35W as it's on my normal route.
All I can say is damn.
I talked to the guy who was going to switch with me and one of our drivers was on the other bridge to avoid the traffic jam on I35W... and saw it collapse.
I have heard reports of at least 13 dead and 7 injured so far from the wreckage.*CNN reporting 1 dead so far my person says they had talked to someone from HCMC (a local hospital)

I just went over that thing. Parents called to check if I made it home. *Whew*

Minneapolis Goodjers, check-in!

EDIT: Nevermind, I avoided this due to traffic. Looks like I would have been very wet had some kind individual not wrecked their car at fifteen till six tonight. Thanks buddy!

I saw this on IPTV at work and it was completely insane.
I am shocked this happened, I hope there aren't as many fatalities as this thing looks to have caused.

luckily (?) the road was down to a single lane each way because of the roadwork so it could have been much, much worse. Normally that stretch of road is bumper to bumper across that whole section across 3 southbound and fairly full northbound.

I used to drive over this bridge every single day. Glad today wasn't one of those days.

Yeah, Nos, I agree, but it still looks freaking horrible. One report says a motorist felt something like a jackhammer just before it fell...I wonder if some kind of resonant shaking occured? I guess it depends on the nature of the work that was being done, and the traffic and such.

They were resurfacing the bridge, basically it appeared they were pulling up the old concrete and pouring on new stuff (which appeared to be about 2 inches thicker than the old layer (as far as I could tell while driving by at 45 MPH).
This bridge was odd in two ways it had no support in the river itself, it was a single long steel truss span, and it had a deicing feature (basically PVC pipes we run throughout the concrete and a deicing fluid is pumped through it when the conditions are right for icing).bridge specs

not sure what the jackhammer thing was, unless it was the supports failing one after the other.

The smart ass cynic in me wonders how long it will take for the media to blame it on Global Warming and second hand smoke.

Seriously though they don't know yet.

I was watching local news (SF Bay Area) covering it, and they kept mentioning how eerily similar it was to the '89 earthquake that collapsed two major freeways and how the casualties were mitigated by the fact that the A's and Giants were due to start the third game of the World Series right around the time of the quake, thus there were fewer people on the roads at the time. I don't suppose the Twins were supposed to be playing a game around that time, right?

Last I heard only three fatalities. A tragedy to be sure, but it could have been a lot worse...

They said it had been three years since this bridge was last inspected.

Does anyone recall the documentary on bridge dis-repair in the US? It was on Discovery or History channel or something a few years back. Basically not enough money to pay for inspection of all the bridges all the time.

The channel I was watching made it a point to announce that it wasn't an act of terrorism. It seems to be the norm for everything bad that happens lately.

Actually, I thought those announcements were interesting since bridges have historically been extremely high value military targets of opportunity.

So, I don't fault them for the idea, but Minneapolis might not be the most likely target, unless you're a high speed bomber pilot in Vietnam.

actually it would have been a horrible target of opportunity militarily speaking as the damn thing was barely driveable because of the work they were doing, you aren't going to slow down traffic that much by removing it entirely at this point (and in fact that had done exactly that a couple of weekends not too long ago for the construction project)

Actually, they were. A lot of the gawker crowd was decked out in Twins jerseys because they were on their way to the game.

Though, I don't think it mitigated anything.

On MPR this morning they talked to a guy from NTSB who said the bridge was inspected in 2006. I'm guessing it's true, because I can't imagine road construction would be approved without a bridge inspection.

Looks like everyone in my office should be safe. We've had the secretaries calling people and have about 85% confirmed so far.

Driving around a huge area of the New York Tri-State area, you would be shocked that this doesn't happen multiple times a day in the US. Infrastructure is a concern, but is too expensive to test, study, and plan out- the replacement of bridges is a logistical nightmare according to officials.

This collapse instantly reminded me of the Mainus River collapse in Connecticut and the Schoharie Creek collapse in New York in the 1980s.

I'm waiting on the Bush/terrorism slant myself. I'm a little surprised that the incident in Dallas at the oxyacetylene/flammable gases plant wasn't somehow also inducted into the Bush terror ideology.

This CNN article states that...

Quote:
Two years ago, the U.S. Department of Transportation's National Bridge Inventory database said the bridge was "structurally deficient."

...and...

Quote:
The bridge received a rating of 4 on a scale of 1 to 10. A bridge receives a rating of 4 when there is "advanced section loss, deterioration."

...which is really scary to me. I know I wouldn't exactly be thrilled to be driving over a bridge rated 4/10 on a safety scale. That said, based on info I've heard regarding overall bridge safety in the US this morning, I probably do exactly that a couple times per day...

Welll, listening to NPR this morning, they interviewed a gas station clerk that was working at a gas station next to the bridge when it went down and he described the sound as a 'boom.' Now certainly millions of tons of concrete slapping land and water would make quite a ruckus, but regardless, it was the first thing I thought of.

Even though the bridge is rated a 4 out of 10 and is probably heavily stressed because of the wintry conditions in MN, it just seems a little odd.

Whichever construction firm and insurance company covering that firm were on that bridge are in a heap of settlements up to their ears.

Yeah, if I really wanted to scare Americans, I'd blow up a bridge in a place like Minneapolis. Small potatoes compared to the Big Apple, if you ask me.
