I'm one of those simpsons "snobs" that pretty much thinks everything after season 9-10 has been pretty weak/forced/unfunny. Still, I own all the DVD sets, and the show has been a huge part of my life. It's almost like church to me now-- I watch the show, solemnly, every week out of some sort of duty.
That said, I am very split on this movie because, really, if they can't make 1-2 episodes that last 22 minutes FUNNY, how am I expecting more from this movie? All of the "jokes" they've shown in the trailers have been extremely lame (the "treasure of Ima Wiener"? does ANYone actually find that funny?). Wow, look... Homer is bouncing between a giant rock and a bar with a sign that says "Hard Place"... what a hilarious gag!
And how can the world have both a Reinier Wolfcastle AND an Arnold Schwartzenegger? It boggles my mind
Seriously, I hope it's decent... I really think it won't be, but I still hope.
All of the "jokes" they've shown in the trailers have been extremely lame
Yeah, the trailers didn't do much for me either. On the other hand, the reviews seem to be very positive so far (88% at Rotten Tomatoes at the moment) and I would LOVE to see a good Simpsons movie, something that captures what was so great about that show that it seems to have lost.
I'm going to try to go on Sunday, I hope it has turned out well.
I'm baffled by that 88% as well... the only thing I can think of is that most critics certainly aren't big fans of the show, and so they might have been impressed... just like there are still people I talk to who say season 18 is "just as funny" as any of the other seasons *shudder*. Those aren't reviews I can trust, because I know what kind of hard core fan I am.
And that's what I wish I could find... a review from someone who loved the show, but then grew disenchanted with it. I found ONE that seemed to be from that perspective, and it's one of the only "rotten" reviews on the front page.
See I am a huge Simpsons fan and I do think that the seasons from 9 - 18 are as good as the older seasons, mainly because even though it's depending on the episodes though for the most part the Best episodes of the newer seasons are just as good as any great episode of the season,
I also think that the worst episodes of the newer seasons are really bad but it does even out.
I am going to see the movie tonight and I will give you my feedback
but I was reading on nohomers.net and it sounds like the response is overwhelming postive

I found it very funny. Some gags work, some don't, but on the whole I thought it was pretty consistently entertaining. If you're expecting it to be something besides The Simpsons, you're bound to be disappointed, but I wasn't and settled in to chuckle at classic gags.
I'll give it a pretty strong, yea. See it with friends and in a packed theater. It's the kind of movie that's best experienced with a cheerful crowd.
as a die hard fan, it's closer to the last 5-8 years worth of episodes than to the "golden age" period, but it was enjoyable. I'd say it's worth seeing, although I think it falls somewhere in the B or B- range for me.
While I agree with Elysium that you shouldn't expect anything other than a 90 minute Simpsons episode, there are some movies that I think transcend their source-- the SOUTH PARK movie, for example-- and the Simpsons movie doesn't do that.
Worth seeing, if you've been watching up until this point

As someone who consider's anything less than an A- movie not worth my 10 dollars, I'm happy I can now pass on it!
Shrug. Simpsons should have been canceled 8 years ago. At least Seinfeld had the grace to die with some semblance of dignity.

I totally disagree with the point that it should have been canceled because I think the show is pretty good but I would definitely recommend for you to go to the movie, it's definitely something to experience in a theater enviroment.

To each their own.
To me, this film is not even CLOSE to the quality of the best episodes from seasons 3-9. It IS better than many of the episodes from the past few lackluster seasons, however... the fact that a non-simpsons fan likes it really doesn't mean much when most of us ARE die-hard fans, and as everyone knows, die-hard fans are MUCH harder to please.
The animation is pretty solid... using a lot of the 3D effects we've seen used in FUTURAMA previously. As I said, if you've been watching the show up until now, you'll most likely enjoy the film. Expecting it to be an "A+" going in seems like it can lead only to being let down. I say-- set your expectations low, and you'll definitely think it's worth your money... set them too high, and you'll be disappointed.
Anyone who has been wondering what Bart's wang looks like--this IS the film for you
Seeing as how I've agreed with everything SommerMatt has said regarding Simpsons. I'm not going to be seeing this movie even though I have every line from the first 9 seasons memorized, or at least I used to until my love of Simpsons faded with every new episode the past couple seasons.
Now, I don't think recent episodes were bad, I think they were a different show entirely. Different types of story telling and jokes. The first 9 seasons = witty jokes that were funnier the more you know about the source material. The last 9 seasons = irreverent jokes that require no prior knowledge. To each their own.
I know I shouldn't write in a thread where I didn't experience the question, but I was a HUGE Simpsons fan and dammit I wanted to express my "snobbery."

True enough, but I think really the quality of the best episodes from season 3-9 are great episodes, but I think it's more nostalgic than anything else to hold those seasons on such a pedestal though I do think that Elliotx is right that it's basically a different show entirely with the later seasons, still a great show and just totally different than season 1-10.
I am crazy though and I will always be a massive Simpson's fan, so it's all good.

seeing as I own all of the DVD sets and watch the reruns everyday, this is definitely not the case.
so far, the consensus seems to be:
=If you are a casual fan, it's worth seeing
=if you think seasons 10-18 are just as good as 1-9, then it's worth seeing
=if you think the show jumped the shark 8 years ago and haven't watched it in a few seasons, MAYBE see it drunk (or wait for the DVD)
=if you think it jumped the shark but STILL watch it every sunday, it's worth seeing (it's better than most of the last few seasons).
It seemed better than the episodes of the past years, but not as good as the early seasons. High quality, but nothing really new or surprising.
Basically, I'd say you're not missing anything special if you wait for the DVD. But if you go to the theater you won't walk out thinking the movie blew.
I'm mostly in agreement with SommerMatt. B-/C+. The movie is enjoyable but still feels like a Fox special episode rather than a movie. The storyline was mostly phoned in with the writers taking the "low hanging fruit" of jokes (nudity, cussing, body part jokes, etc) that they can get away with now that they're a "movie".
But I don't expect a solid story anymore from the Simpsons so that didn't really bother me. The jokes are mostly good but spaced too far apart.
If you're a Simpson fan and still watch the series, even occasionally, go see it. (and stay through the credits)
If you stopped watching the new episodes... wait for the DVD.
There was one thing in the movie that really got me--
