360 HD DVD drive - $180 + 5 free movies
Thursday, July 26th, 2007 - 11:20am
Announced at Comic-Con, price drops $20 to $179 on Aug 1, and if you buy a drive from Aug 1 to Sep 30 you'll get 5 free movies (from a selection of 15 probably-crappy ones). I don't have a link to the 15 movies, sorry.
We shall grapple with the ineffable, and see if we may not eff it after all.

Interesting. I'm kind of bummed, as we have moved close to a Blockbuster now, and it seems they have gone Blu-ray. For $180, I'd get this if there was a good source of HD rentals. For now, my upconverting DVD player looks great. If I want to go Blu-ray it is priced out of my range. So I will be waiting awhile longer.

The 15 movies are in 5 groups; you pick one from each group. Kind of lame, but there are some good movies on there like Casablanca, Apollo 13, etc. Some real lamers, though: who the hell wants Dukes of Hazard?
Grumsh, Troll Mage on Blackhand
Kroe, Tauren Hunter on Blackhand
Khoram's Workshop
I don't mind Dukes of Hazzard for what it was it's decent I thought
but that's pretty cool I was planning to pick up the HD-DVD drive for the 360 anyway this is just a good reason to now.

Am I correct in my understanding that:
a) In order to actually get anything above 480p from your HD-DVD drive you have to buy the Xbox VGA cable
b) Have a TV that can utilize said VGA cable (or VGA->DVI), because the HD-DVD player will not upscale using component?
If so, I'm hosed. My TV has component and HDMI - that's it. And I'm not buying an Elite any time soon.
Frankly, Casablanca in HD doesn't appeal to me as much as Jessica Simpson does. Maybe because Casablanca is fuzzy to begin with. Maybe.

Apollo 13, and maybe Sky Captain, are the only ones of these I'd actually re-buy in HD. If they re-released Eart to the Moon I'd be in like Flynn

Actually the Casablanca transfer is excellent... its like having a pristine film reel of your very own. Unforatunately it seems a lot of the high def crowd only likes TnA and 'splosions... which there's nothing wrong with that, I like'em just fine(300 weeeeeeeeee), but I'd sure like to get some classics like Spartacus or Ben-hur... any movie with a 70mm print. I bought the HD-DVD add-on last winter, but sold it after a couple of months and fortunately recouped $130 for it. I wish Warner would get off thir butt and release Casablanca on Blu-Ray.
As for Jessica Simpson, once she opens her mouth and tries to act, no matter how nice her legs are she is completely unwatchable. The pain... the pain in my brain!
I don't think I want old, misty Casablanca to look crisper, though. Jessica could stand to be sharper.

c) The add-on player is only useful as long as your 360 is operational.

Oouuuuuuuuuuuuu!
Casablanca was intentioanlly hazy, though. You want it to be more crisply foggy?

The Casablanca HD DVD is getting excellent reviews for video quality.

This still isn't enough to sway me toward the add-on. I think the only reason I'd buy the add-on is if it added anything to the gaming experience. I'm honestly waiting until a winner is picked, or until the dual players catering to both Blue-Ray and HD-DVD are more affordable - the LG one is currently is $1200, but comes with 10 free movies of your choice if purchased at BB.
Oh well. I'm good with DVD's for now. There are enough good movies in HD on TV to keep me preoccupied for a little while.

Not much of it was hazy besides the fog scene at the end. True, certain shots in the film were shot soft via lighting effects... mostly close-up shots on Bergman to make her "glow" and make her look angelic almost. But inside Rick's place/Casablanca exterior shots, the film has normal sharpness and film grain... though there is lot of people smoking everywhere. The HD-DVD transfer didn't have any additonal "sharpening"added, so there's no halo-effects or digital noise. It looks pretty much how I expect it looked on opening night 50+ years ago... and that to me is amazing.
Don't get me wrong, I'd enjoy watching it in HD. I'm just not as pulled.
Now if you could get Donna Reed in HD... rowr.

This morning, Best Buy just had the 360 HD player listed at $149.99. Perhaps this is an error or the current deal without the 5 HD DVD's, but for one who prefers to rent instead of own, this sounds like a better deal...now if it was only in stock.
This still qualifies for the 5 DVD deal, however BB's are selling out super fast.

That $149.99 price must have been an error, the price went back up to $179.99.
If there were groups with lame movies, I'd be way more on board with the 'this deal sucks!'. Looking through it though, there's some good stuffs. My list would look like this: Riddick, Constantine or Dukes of Hazzard, Four Brothers, Blazing Saddles(WE ARE NOW ARMED WITH MIGHTY JOINT!), and probably U-571 or We were Soldiers.
Too bad I don't have a 360 or a TV that would make this worthwhile

The thing I hate about these deals is getting excited about my movies and then having to wait the stated 8-10 weeks for them to arrive.

The only crappy thing about owning this and having a few movies for it now is that regular DVD's look almost blurry in comparison. It's not enough of a difference to be frustrating or annoying, but it really is noticeable on a 1080p set.
I don't think the difference is as striking on a 720p set though.

I'm tempted to go out and purchase the drive now, but I have a question for the NetFlix users here; what's the HD-DVD selection like right now?
I've been waiting for a winner to emerge, but for $180, assuming the selection is halfway decent, I guess you can't really go too wrong...
WoW Blackhand Alliance: Baylie (Resto Druid)
For me it's like throwing away $180. The DVD format war was fine, DVD+R and DVD-R at least still had the same capacity. However HD-DVD's capacity is nearly half of Bluray's and has considerably less headroom to grow so frankly I can't wait for HD-DVD to die out soon enough so that prices can come down.
What's the upside to HDDVD then? I admit I don't know much about the two formats, but it seems to me that HDDVD has got to have some benefit over BluRay, or it would have died on the design table, no?
WoW Blackhand Alliance: Baylie (Resto Druid)
I second the seemingly blurry appearance of non-HD movies on a 1080P set; but at least it's less of a difference than between HD broadcasts and a slightly fuzzy analog station.
It seems to be pretty good from the looks of my queue. I have about 8 HD-DVDs in there and only two have a wait on them. If you want to check out their titles, just go under Genres and you'll see a category for HD DVD.
I jumped in now because I don't see a clear winner emerging for quite some time and like you I thought the price was right.
