MGS 4 Gameplay Movie

I guess, everyone has seen that one by now.

First thoughs:

1. The guards in the very first Thief game seemed to have more situational awareness than the "We be Storm Troopers smart" guys shown in that video. (Like the guys not reacting to a comrad shot right next to them.) Of course, they might have toned it down in the demo in order to do what they wanted to do, rather than having to wrestle with the guards more than necessary. Seemed a bit odd nevertheless.

2. I guess development costs of 'next-gen' titles could have been lower if only CoD4, Gears, Killzone 2, Resistance and MGS4 had shared level assets instead of building the same war-torn city again and again.

I'll have to see how the final product ends up but what's with the slapstick? Zany Metal Gear robot and giggle-inducing statue camo?

Looks great. There's a lot of solid texture work in there.

Truthfully that's the first footage i've seen that actually has me eager to play the game. The previous stuff may have been real time but without having to compute AI, physics, etc even real time cut scenes can be deceiving. But yeah that looked fantastic.

Agreed -- None of the NPCs seemed to be aware of Snake, good or bad. So what's the penalty getting spotted anyway? I can't imagine an alarm going off in a warzone, but perhaps they radio the rest of their unit to come? What if their unit is fighting the other army?

The graphics looked good, but overall the game seemed disjointed to me for some reason.

Very impressive! It looks like MGS has finally outdone Splinter Cell in terms of control. You can finally run around while crouched! This has me even more impressed than I figured it would. I was hoping for a bit more "realisim" in gameplay though, no holding 20 weapons, a giant metal barrel, a toddler sized robot and PS3 controller in your inventory, that kind of thing but I suppose you can't get everything. Now where can I get one of those PS3s...

I thought the adaptive camo looked really neat, but not really conducive of interesting engagements. For example: to realize you need to camo up and hunker down, first you have to notice approaching enemies. If you are noticing approaching enemies, then you can see them. If you can see them, then they can see you, and thus your cover is blown before you ever had it. This happens at the beginning of the demonstration, except that they don't see the main character for no apparent reason. I don't understand the appeal of a stealth game where your opponents are oblivious.

I could see the camo stuff working out if your original que of approaching danger was auditory, or maybe by using gear that allowed you to see through material, or even just being warned by radio; anything but direct line of sight.

I feel bad for the PMC soldier having a mental breakdown because no matter where he goes in the wartorn city, all he can see is rubble taking the shape of an old man's ass.

Lots of good stuff but something were just missing that I expected (destroyable vehicles, terrain deformation, etc).

Aren't we making the bar a bit high? Just in that demo alone I see more interaction and intelligent game play opportunities than in every single FPS out right now and including some of the next gens coming out this fall. To me it seems like MGS4 has already given you a huge amount of options on how you want to progress and looks like fun. And if you still can't find anything good, at least it's better than Killzone 2 or looks it.

Well he destroys a tank with an RPG... You hoped for drivable vehicles or something?

The barrel-rolling, vomiting, ball-grabbing and porn-watching felt a little out of place but I was impressed overall.

That said, there's nothing here particularily compelling from a gameplay standpoint.

Bingo. The van wasn't even destroyed to begin with, just a shattered windshield texture and some fire underneath it. /nitpick

Still looked awesome.

The porn has always been in the MGS series as well as the vomiting and ball grabbing. Barrel-rolling is new.

It looks awesome and it's well in line with what the series has established as far as gameplay goes. If you don't play Metal Gear, you're not going to "get" a lot of the humor and gameplay shown in brief, five minute clips. It just doesn't click with some people.

Which is a shame. I really wanted to like MGS3 because I had heard so much about some of the sequences (The End in particular) but I just couldn't stomach some of the atmosphere. Did the series have this sort of tone in MGS1 and I just didn't notice it?

Yup. Psycho Mantis and the Raven guy, for example, should have served as indicators of what to expect.

The van's entire texture got replaced with a blackened scorched look, not just the windshield. But yeah, better destruction would have been appropriate. I couldn't make out how much the armored car model deformed/exploded when hit by the RPG.

I could not find another MGS4 thread but there are two new trailers from TGS. I'll hold my judgments till I can play the game.

Naomi's boo... I mean the new trailer has mean pretty excited for the game! It really looks like they're trying as hard as possible to tie up loose ends yet still introduce a lot of new characters. Olga's daughter? The original Big Boss? Metal Gear vs. Metal Gear Ray?! I can just imagine the whole game being a brain asplosion. The few gameplay videos over at Gamevideos didn't manage to impress, though that was more in part to whoever was playing it sucking oh-so-badly.

I really like the look of the new MGO as well. Its great to hear that there will be a separate release for it (more polish) but they'll be including a sampler with MGS4. Having attempted to play the multiplayer in Subsistence I was pretty irked by the gameplay, though that was much more the fault of me constantly and horribly losing in it. Hopefully I'll have more fun with this.

I've cut myself off from anymore trailers, especially the latest one which is apparently pretty full of spoilers. I haven't seen the bosses either, so all is well. Now a demo, on the other hand ...

Same here. Here's hoping the demo, should it arrive on the PSN, won't be too spoilerific. As has been demonstrated on numerous occasions in the past I have much less resolve when it comes to avoiding demos as opposed to videos.
