You down with June NPD, yeah you know me!
Monday, July 23rd, 2007 - 7:20pm
June hardware figures are spreading across the net today faster than you can say, Zombie Apocalypse.
Nintendo DS: 561,000
Wii: 381,780
PlayStation Portable: 290,100
PlayStation 2: 270,760
Xbox 360: 198,440
Game Boy Advance: 113,870
PlayStation 3: 98,470
Despite rumors of TEH DOOM for the 360 and Sony Marketing hacking a hundred dollars off the neck of the PS3's pricetag faster than Perdue can process a chicken, market chaos has been repelled and the order of things continues for yet another month....

Wow, 7 years and still PS2s selling like hotcakes...

I think the numbers just continue to show that the push to next gen was an artificial one. Personally, I'm glad next gen is here though.
I'm glad to see the 360 still doing well despite all the negativity in the gaming press that played out this month.

The Wii has now matched the 360 in Japan/USA sales. I saw a graph over at neogaph. The 360 should be selling a lot better than it is.

I'm sure their investors are thrilled that they are being outsold by a seven year old console, a supposedly failed portable (not really) and two Nintendo platforms by hundreds of thousands.
The numbers from May, just to show the current trend.
What made the PS2 jump nearly 100,000 units I wonder?

they ALL jumped. Maybe it was because of Summer vacation?

Well, we'll not see the effects of the PS3 "price drop" until next month, or perhaps beyond. Still, not great. The 360 once again sells double the PS3. And Nintendo might have trouble hearing the cries of hardcore gamers, from inside their castles made of gold. Notice: DS and Wii combined outsold the PS2, PSP, PS3 and 360 combined. And by quite a margin, not even counting the GBA. Ouch.

Ok, you've outted my veiled words. I meant to write:
"Regardless of all the other numbers, I'm relieved to see the 360 still selling about double the PS3 for another month, especially after all the negativity in the gaming press that played out recently because I really like my 360 (even if it etches my discs... occasionally... to my great frustration.. so much so that I want to throw it across the room)"
There I said it.. I came clean(no jokes!). Is there a support group for battered gamers? Maybe I need an anger management session to free myself of any remaining haterade.

Double check the PSP sold numbers. I think they are a bit off. I have 230k sold on my scorecard.
(edit: whoops [Gamasutra UPDATE: NPD has sent out corrected numbers for the PSP, which sold 290,100 units in June, rather than the 230,100 first given.])
Just the usual trend. And look: a hardcore Wii game in the top 10. Wow. Who woulda thought that?
I noticed that Resident Evil 4 sold well on the Wii. This is an old game, but it sold well because people have these systems and need something to play on them. That was my reason for buying it, anyway. The $30 price helped big, too. Yay for cheap systems and cheap games.
Again, I think that MS and Sony have nearly tapped out the market of hardcore gamers willing to pay $299+ for a console. Either their prices are going to drop significantly or their sales will continue to stagnate under Nintendo's budget-conscious, family-friendly onslaught.
Everything can be debated, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's debatable.

It worked for them with the GB, GBC, GBP, GBA, GBA-SP, and the NDS. No reason it shouldn't work on on a console as well. Yay for impulse buy threshold!

It's worth noting that these are for a 5 week period and also include the 1st week of July.
Still looks like a rough 1:2:4 sales ratio for the PS3:360:Wii. It'll be interesting to see how and if those ratios change over the holidays.

Criminy. Who is buying the DS at this point? Are people buying them and putting them in different rooms of the house so they don't have to pack it around?
XBox Live: DSGamer GWJ | PSN: DSGamerGWJ
One for each restroom and one non-tainted DS, per person, per household. I could see that.
Every time an American boy reaches 7 or 8, chances are good he's getting a DS for his birthday. You probably don't find a lot of kids who want to share with brothers of sisters, either.
So a half million boys and girls turn 7 or 8 every month?
XBox Live: DSGamer GWJ | PSN: DSGamerGWJ
Oh the DS Lite is just getting started here.
Plus if you have a DS it's very tempting to get a second because so many games have local wi-fi modes and you usually don't need a second cart.
As soon as I patent my combo DS recharger dock/toilet paper dispenser, you're going to see a BIG jump in those numbers.

Actually over 650K do that every month just in the U.S., according to my very rough estimate based on the 2000 population statistics. 271M (total residents in U.S.) * .22 (22% < 15 years old) / 12 (months per year) * .133333 (2 age groups / 15 age groups). Thats a lot of Pokemon-themed birthday parties right there.
Everything can be debated, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's debatable.

According to the U.S. census estimates, there are 20 million or so children for each five-year age group, so figure 2 million 8-year old boys per year. Yes, they don't all get DSs, but it seems like all my sons friends have one. That's going to give any system a boost. The total kid/teen market, 5-19, looks to be something like 60-62 million.
I guess the consumers like games that feature more than three colours and bald space marines.
