Virtual Console Monday
I am going to start posting the titles that have come to Virtual Console, last week Paper Mario was released and it's one of the best RPGs ever made. This week we get Shining Force and Kirby:
Kirby's Dream Course
Super NES

Step up to the tee for the wackiest golf game of your life. This one- or two-player game features a floating golf course in the sky. High above Dream Land, players can pitch and putt the ever-popular puff ball, Kirby, through a maze of three-dimensional obstacles on a zany checkerboard course. Players must aim for the multitude of enemies that are spread throughout each fairway. Kirby must hit all the enemies to make them disappear, and the last one becomes the hole. Sink Kirby into the hole to advance to the next stage and clear all 8 courses – 64 holes in all.Devil's Crush

Rated E for Everyone – Animated Blood, Mild Fantasy Violence
600 Wii Points
Devil's Crush is the exciting sequel to the hit pinball game Alien Crush and features even smoother ball movement and enhanced special effects. Shoot the ball onto the board with the Devil Shooter, then use flippers and nudging to keep it in play and rack up a high score. Complete certain conditions to play up to six different bonus stages. Get a "Perfect Clear" on those to earn a huge amount of points. The game's ominous theme is enhanced by its enemies: wandering skeleton knights, sorcerers and even a giant face that changes from a goddess to a sinister serpent.Shining Force
Sega Genesis

Rated E for Everyone – Mild Fantasy Violence
800 Wii Points
In ages long forgotten, Light fought Darkness for control of the world. Finally, the Ancients defeated the evil ruler of the dark forces known as Dark Dragon and cast him into another dimension, though he vowed to return in 1,000 years. As time passed, all memory of Dark Dragon was buried, and the land of Rune enjoyed 10 centuries of peace. Yet, as promised, the dark ruler returned, along with hordes of evil creatures that ravaged the land. As chaos erupted, several strongholds of Good still held out, awaiting a hero who could wield the Powers of Light.

Has anyone here played Shining Force? How does is it compare with more modern fare?
Everything can be debated, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's debatable.

I'd say it's a cross between Advance Wars and an RPG. It was pretty cool for the time, probably one of the best games Sega put out, but I haven't played it in a decade, it might not have aged well. It was really good for the time, however. Even the art style was nice.

Shining Force is great. Not as complex as let's say Final Fantasy Tactics, but addictive nevertheless. Damn you, Sega, for not releasing part 2 and 3 of Shining Force III over here and producing lame 'Shining' action-RPGs, when everybody just wanted a new Shining Force title.
Also, Paper Mario came out last week - people, who never played it, have to get that one.
Devil's Crush is out this week?! *Puff of Smoke In Shape of PXA*

Thanks for the info, guys. I love me some strategy-oriented RPGs, and it sounds like one of the rare classic titles that's interesting enough to pick up for more than just nostalgia.
What's the purpose of releasing sequels that have completely different gameplay than the much-beloved originals? I just don't grasp this concept.

To be fair, the very first Shining game, Shining in the Darkness, wasn't an tactics RPG either. Nevertheless, none of the 'non-Force' titles was received as well as the 'Force ones'. I guess action-adventures/RPGs sell better than tactics RPGs overall, but the other Shining titles simply were no Zelda.
They released a DS game a few months (or years?) ago, based on Shining Force. It was pure, unadulterated crap.
But I wasn't surprised, with how much Sega sucks these days.

If you've never seen Shining Force before, here it is.

I nearly exploded in a Joygasm when I read about a new Kirby game.
Then, it was Kirby Golf, and my hopes were crushed. I want Kirby, not Kirby Golf!
Shining Force does look damn cool, and I want Paper Mario.
Anyone else noticing that most of the fare posted is really.. not worth buying? Crap, I might even dare to say?

maybe you're talking about the SHINING SOUL games for the GBA? There weren't any DS released "Shining" games, as least none that I can find.
If you want to play the original SHINING FORCE, you might want to buy the GBA cart and take it on the road.

The game is a very rudimentary version of FIRE EMBLEM, and *IS* fun... but later battles seem to last for hours.

Funny, I was just about to come post that Paper Mario was on VC, because it's an awesome game and didn't see it mentioned before.
I really liked Shining Force (and the sequel) from back in the Sega Days. In fact, I believe that was my first TRPG. (Excluding Ultima, if that counts)
Largely, yes. I think they should release some packs of these old NES and TGX games - 5 for $5 or something, it would definitely get the impulse buy and beat out the real competition (ROMS, that is).
However, I'm always happy to own Link to the Past in yet another media, because I have played that game a dozen times on four different systems.
I'll be picking up Shining Force the next time I have some Wii Points. Just spent my last 1,000 on Paper Mario (and left me with 400, which irks me).

Today's games:
Dynamite Headdy is a classic Treasure shooter so if you're a fan, it might be worth the download. But a slow week with Super Mario Strikers being released.

Wow. There's literally nothing of interest there.

No kidding. Has anyone ever even heard of those three? I know I haven't.

For some reason, I find it incredibly odd that they bothered to put an accent over the "e" in creme. I keep hearing Harvey Birdman in my head.

We got some good stuff this week:
Waverace 64 and Galaga? Fricking awesome.

Total. Meh.
I get my hopes up come Monday morning and then it's, bam, disappointment city.

All the Adventures of Lolo are great challenging puzzle games.
Well, WaveRace 64 was pretty much Awesome in a Cart. I'd buy that if I was bored... But I fear it might look "not so good" after all these years.

My big problem with Wave Race 64 is the soundtrack. Specifically, there's one point when the music sounds just like the "you're gonna make it after all!" tune from the Mary Tyler Moore show. Listen for it as you play, you'll hear it. It repeats every couple of minutes as the music loops. And if you and I are of the same species, it will also drive you completely and dangerously apesh*t. The last time I tried to play Wave Race 64, I awoke with a headache in maximum-security prison, and the eight people nearest me never woke again. True story.
The market has much to answer for as to why gaming is NOT an art. -- illum
Yeah, I think I'll just get a rom.

Hah! Yeah, I really couldn't say. I always turned it all the way down and just played some rock of my own. I guess I didn't miss anything =)

Good idea
I prefer the third. I remember being stuck in a underwater stage. I try it many time and never found the solution.
Someone know if games on virtual console keep the password save method? I hope not.
Here are today's games:
Next week we get Super Metroid, a must have.

I think I'm going to have to grab Metroid and Shining in the Darkness. I'm a sucker for Metroid, and for RPGs.
I've been playing Super Metroid on my SNES again. It still rocks, so much.

I played Shining in the Darkness back in the day. It wanted to be great, but fell a little short.
*WACHUNGA*!
One thing I never really understood... why did they bother adding in those materials that always got made into cursed weapons? I mean, they were never worth using!
Skriss: lvl 70 undead mage - Bloodhoof
Kyrator: lvl 63 night elf rogue - Blackhand
Thadryn: lvl 70 draenei mage - Blackhand
Super Metroid will be mine next week.
