I'm stoked, I really like FarCry yeah ok it lacked in originality, but it was a well rounded FPS. I played it on the PC and missed the XBox 'expansion'(?)
Release is supposed to be spring of '08.

Neat. The console version was much better than the original PC edition. Hopefully they do right with the sequel.

It's Ubisoft Montreal developing Far Cry 2, which I believe is the same team that developed Far Cry: Instincts for the console. I thought Instincts was great, so I am optimistic for this one.
Crytek is off snuggling with EA these days.

Wait, I thought Crysis was FarCry 2.

Crysis is made by CryTek and it's on the CryEngine2, but Ubi bought the rights to FarCry some time ago.

Naw, the only thing they have in common are the 'Cry' in the name. Ubi owns the Far Cry franchise now.

I loved the PC version of Far Cry, except for the screwed-up checkpoint save system.

Certis was right. Jokes apparently only work with emoticons.

Well...good jokes work without 'em.

My gripe about Ubi's take on the license is that they didn't capitalize on the possibilities that the original's first few chapters offered. Instead, they rebuilt the game as a fun but fairly conventional shooter. I agree that the console version was much better than the indoor/underground portions of the original PC edition, but in the end it didn't float my boat.
I don't know about Ubisoft Montreal lately. I've played and enjoyed a ton of their games, but there's a common flavor to their titles that I'm getting a little tired of. I can't quite put my finger on it, but think I see it in Assassin's Creed. I just can't get fired up about that game, and I'm not sure I can get fired up about another Ubisoft FarCry.

Wait the console version was better? which? I find that hard to believe seeing as "PCs have bettar grafix". Can anyone elaborate?
"grafix" don't make a game fun. It's all about the gameplay.
You would do well in reading the game thread.

I am glad, because I loved the PC version up to the mutants, after that I hated it and I was fearing I was right and you guys were all wrong.

Some information from zee latest issue of Gamestar:
- Jack Carver from Far Cry is not the main protagonist - truly a huge downer given the amount of detail and craft that went into the design of this really remarkable, non-generic character
- No super-senses, mutants, aliens, laser guns and the like - the designers realized that FC was only fun until you ran into mutants
- FC2 takes place in some fictional country in central Africa - awesome! Africa's definitely an underused setting, it's one of the reasons I'm also keeping an eye on Resident Evil 5.
- Various settings from jungle, savannah, steppe to desert
- Country's plagued by civil war between two clans
- Player happens to be a mercenary
- Player gets to choose from 10-12 characters at the beginning, each of them having a different background story - no effect on the game's story though, also no different strengths or weaknesses or anything like that
- The characters not chosen by the player will be present in the game, following their own goals
- Character wakes up at the beginning, weakened by some malaria infection, knows that he has to kill some person, but doesn't remember why - um, F.A.R. C.R.Y. 2 - Shadow of S.T.A.L.K.E.R.?
- On your journey to find that person, you'll be able to work with both sides, build up a reputation and the like
- 14 different vehicles available, 41 different variations of them altogether. Jeeps, trucks, boats - no motorcycles though. Hang glider's back, too.
- Both clans are fighting their war as you're playing the game, strategy and behvaiour depending on the amount of reinforcements, morale and reliability of the equipment
- Missions will depend on that, e.g. one warlord might send you out to destroy a training camp to weaken the troop reinforcements or have you level a radio station to the ground to lower the enemy's morale
- low morale = enemies more likely to retreat
- If you destroy a repair shop, their equipment is more likely to malfunction
- Weapon detorioration - the more you use a gun, the more it becomes prone to jamming
- Characters can carry two rifles at a time in addition to his pistole and a machete
- FC2 has a dynamic day/night cycle, dynamic weather system, storms inclusive
- Fire simulation - you can set grass, trees and the like on fire. Fire then will spread depending on wind conditions and material
- Most objects to be destructable
- Main character recovers after a while (a la Call of Duty 2 et al)
- The game world of FC2 is about 50 km²
- Game seems to be a mix of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and Boiling Point
Graphics look OK, definitely no match for Crysis though.Well put.
Good, then my rig will probably run it.

Nevermind stalker... what about Boiling point... virtually all the other aspects of the game are pick-pocketed from that...
Still, sounds cool. But really... is there much open water in that part of africa? I did like the island settings.

The screenies did show steppe and savannah settings, there was only a piece of artwork hinting at what the jungle may look like. Considering the point that there's at least one boat among the vehicles available, chances are that there's more many tiny creeks in the game. Don't expect a caribbean a setting though. The whole place is surrounded by a desert. If you try to leave the country, your character there will die of dehydration or something.
Wah? An FPS based on the The Island of Dr. Moreau lacks originality?
We shall grapple with the ineffable, and see if we may not eff it after all.
Sure does. But as long as they make a kick ass game out of it, I don't mind.

Update to Farcry 2 that I found...
A Demo of the game in two parts.

I've been highly impressed with what I've seen so far. It looks like they're seriously trying to go back and make a true successor to the original game instead of a generic brand cash-in that they had been doing with the console versions.

Finally, I can find out what happened to all my favorite FarCry characters after I stopped playing in disgust. Did the Hawaiian shirt guy defeat the lumpy killer monkeys? Did he ever get out of Corridor #46? And what about our old friend Non-Linear FPS? Did he really die in that helicopter explosion? Or was he just waiting for the monkeys to go away?
