Looking For A Messenger / Laptop Bag
Thursday, July 19th, 2007 - 11:20am
We've got a new 14 inch laptop for work and looking for a nice messenger style bag to carry it around in. I don't want anything that looks like a stuffy old briefcase, but I don't want a backpack either. An over the shoulder with room for extras would be perfect, I'm just drowning in choices here!
Anyone have experience with any cool laptop bags? I want to feel like Jack Bauer without the guns or growly voice.

I like Yakpaks. They're inexpensive, durable and have tons of pockets for extra bits.

Oh you mean a murse. I have a nice leather one from Wilsons that does pretty well. Even fits a widescreen laptop in there. Too bad I never use it, because I don't want to be the guy that carries a murse. You murse carrier.

I've been using customizable Timbuk2 messenger bags for a few years now and they're great.

This is exactly why I have a large grease, oil and dirt stained backpack that I picked up last summer for carrying around my laptop and other odds and ends.

Agreed. They can be pricey but mine's fantastic.

You could go with the classic Bauer bag

or

I second the yakpak vote. My messenger bag is durable and pretty stain-resistant, with plenty of pockets. It isn't specifically designed for a laptop, but I could easily fit a 14" laptop in a sleeve in the back inside pocket.
Edit: They don't make the one I have anymore, but Megatokyo sells it with their logo patched on.

The yak pak tech flapdoozy is love.
"YOU SPOIL, YOU GET SPOILED! AAAAHAHAHAHAHA!"
I swear by the Tom Bihn bags with the modular laptop sleeves.
I just carry my laptop in a nice leather attache (and I mean nice, not one of those horrid combination-lock monstrosities
).
But I understand you young people prefer messenger bags and what nots.
In which case I'd throw in another vote for Timbuk2. They're really nice, and ridiculously durable.
Thank you, bagga, I was waiting for a post along these lines.
This calls for a return to the emo Certis avatar!
I have a laptop backpack, but in all seriousness, I could consider a messenger bag style for my next one.

I vote Timbuk2. Specifically, the Laptop Messenger bag. It has a special padded compartment for a laptop.
Edit: a little more detail; the padded compartment is corduroy lined, and fits my 15 in mac pro like a glove. It's not a large bag, you have room for about 2 inches of paper/book on top of the laptop, but it has a nice set of zip comparments, and i'm not tempted to overstuff it as a result of the slim profile. It's ballistic nylon shell is tough as hell, and i absolutely love it.

I was just about to start a thread like this, or dig up the old one. Cheap Leather recommendations are much appreciated

When I was laptop bag shopping I couldn't really find anything I liked. Instead I went for a nice sleeve and carried on using my existing bag.
A close contender for my money were the Waterfield Cargo Bags, but the cost of importing them was just too high. Especially not being able to actually reach out and touch one. Lots of good reviews though.

I just ordered an Ogio Mono (in black) from Amazon. I had been searching for a murse for quite some time and ultimately realized that didn't want something too small, for fear of the fashion police, and I didn't want a backpack because a) I already have one and b) on weekends or when I'm just going out and about, I don't want a frackin backpack!
You - you already have a bag. You've had it less than half a year.
I thought I was the one who was supposed to buy a new bag every six months. I've had the same purse for three years!

Wait, six months? Three years?!?!?! Would you mind speaking to my wife?

Yeah, but *that* bag doesn't go with his new shoes. No, the colors *are* different; that toned-down mauve is LAST year's color. THIS year's is a more bold mauve. I swear, you make it so hard for him to look fabulous; hmph, he may as well just wear a potato sack. As if.

Well, so much for that purchase.

Don't you work for yourself?
Buying a murse is one thing, but buying it to match something? Someone check his Man Card.

And I need something to match my cell phone holster.
See? That makes more sense. And while I do maintain a consulting business, I do have an actual employer now. Update your fan page, Rat Boy

Besides what has already been recommended, here are a few more to consider:
Johnston & Murphy - have a some really nice leather bags.
Spire USA - bags that are in the waterfield/timbuk2 tradition. I've had two bags from here so can vouch for the quality.
Crumpler - some pretty neat messenger bags that owners rave about.
These are pretts sweet as well

You should check out your local Mountain Equipment Coop (there is one in Winnipeg I think). They have a bunch of shoulder bags that might suit your needs. Check out their online selection here. Stock usually varies between the online shop and the physical stores but it should give you an idea. Anything you get there should be durable and hopefully ethically produced.

Are you trying to look like a grown up?
My favorite laptop bag is a messenger bag for an Xbox360. It works great for holding the laptop (it fits perfectly right into the slot that's supposed to hold controllers along the front) with plenty of room for the various extraneous contraptions, and it's outlasted three Xboxen. And it wipes off with soap and water. For something a little less green, try this.
I also have a Timbuk2 messenger bag I love. I've had it for seven years now and it rules.

If I can hijack the thread briefly, I have a messenger bag I'm happy with but I just picked up a 14" laptop. I was thinking of picking up a laptop sleeve to use in the meantime while I shop for a messenger bag, maybe suggesting a nice bag as a gift somewhere down the line.
My current bag is good but doesn't have any small pockets for holding things on the inside, just 2 loose flaps, so it's hardly a "critical update". Other than that, I like what I've read here so far. Thanks for the good suggestions!
