If there's no online campaign co-op mode, half the reason I'd buy this just went out the window.

However, with that said, I could never understand such posts when I saw them on other forums... but now that I'm posting it, its kind of fun.

THIZ GAME SUX NEWAYS

Eh, it will still sell 10 billion copies.

I always thought that Coop was a feature that would make me buy any game, but apparently developers either don't like it or they don't believe there' s a market for it. Which is it?
The most fun times I've had with games are with Co Op modes.

What's so bad about that? Seriously, I don't want a freaking noob playing with me on story line... as a matter of fact, I don't think I'll EVER play single player... Just seems so cliche. I might just wing it Online with the manual that it comes with.

Sandbox vs. Story

What do you do when your co-op buddy gets so far in front of you? Gears would slingshot the lagging player to the checkpoint. I'm guessing Bungie doesn't want to do that.

What a massive bummer, even if it is somewhat understandable from a technical standpoint.

On the bright side though, the article does indicate that they will have system link (LAN) co-op available, which was NOT the case in Halo 2.

I wouldn't miss it. I got tired of Halo's single-player experience pretty quickly in the first game, and I didn't even bother with it in Halo 2 (meaning I never played the single-player, and didn't play a single moment of it co-op either.) I still felt I got more than my money's worth out of it from the awesome non-co-op multiplayer. I went through a similar experience with Quake way back when, so when they dumped single-player completely for III I didnt really care.

Come to think of it, the few times I played co-op with Halo 1 was at a lan party, and only because my roommate and I were the last ones awake (read: tired of 1 on 1 deathmatches).

They (Bungie) did state that if they can get it working, they would have it as a download. So, that does mean there is hope for it yet.

This is what happens when you play coop on the same box in Halo 1. I'd be fine with that on Halo 3.

If it doesn't have onlie co-op, I'll cancel my reserved copy. I'm no hurry to play.

Yup.

I never played Halo 1 or 2 online. I only played the campaign mode, and mostly co-op at that. I LOVED the co-op in both games, and found the campaign much less entertaining solo.

So it's not an exaggeration when I say that online co-op (so I could actually play co-op with a long distance buddy) was one of the two reasons I would purchase Halo 3. The other is if a long-term active GWJ multiplayer community pops up for it like there has been for Halo 2.

With an online co-op campaign, I would've picked up the game sooner, knowing that I could at least enjoy that (like I did with Gears) and any additional multiplayer would've been awesome and add more value. Without an online co-op campaign, purchase will wait until I can verify if the multiplayer alone will be justification for the title.

I doubt that the majority of player interest is aligned with mine, but I'm just saying that it is at least a launch-day deal-breaker for gamers like myself.

I would have liked co-op and I hope they manage to make it as DLC but I'll still get this game on day one, and so will all of you spineless consumer whores. Don't even try to fool anyone.

A possible consolation prize: Marathon will have 8 player online co-op.

Crackdown only had to synch bubbles of activity around each player involving impressive physics and barebones AI. The distance between characters didn't matter because there was nothing to synchronize in that distance. Gears synched AI well, but didn't really have to worry about large distances or physics. Both are impressive accomplishments. Halo 3 would have to synch both physics and AI over larger distances, and keep track of every active element in one load zone even the enemies between players. There still isn't a precedent for that.

It wasn't very smart of them to keep the unlikeliness of online coop under wraps for so long. Now even if the campaign turns out to be just as excellent as Halo 1's, that'll just be all the more reason to bemoan the previously anticipated coop.

A little disappointing, but understandable. If they have the LAN Coop working hopefully are they'll release it after launch (perhaps to keep laggy games from affecting review scores?) even if you need a very fast connection to get it working properly.

Hmm... 8 players getting jammed together in some of Marathon's narrow corridors. Someone gets frustrated and pulls our his SPNKR. Should be interesting.

Everything I wanted to say about the technical difficulties of online co-op.

Thanks for saving me the time of typing this myself. Now I only have to deal with the mental anguish of reading and listening to the uninformed analysis of this issue that will not doubt be spewed forth everywhere else on the web. Maybe I should just stop listening to gaming podcasts for a few weeks. (Dear god, I already want to punch Garnett Lee in the face for the stupid remarks he will no doubt be making on this week's 1up Yours.)

Wow Evil Avatar is full of sh*t again, what a shock.

It has online coop. Player one controls the MC, player two controls the Arbiter. They go into detail on it in the upcoming issue of EGM.

Actually, I think they are quoting the EGM article as the source of this new revelation. Or more accurately, they are quoting Joystiq who are quoting these guys who are quoting EGM.

So yeah, maybe we should wait for the EGM to actually come out before we take this too seriously.

The CVG article has only one direct quote from Bungie on the subject, and it isn't exactly conclusive:

Quote:
"We're not dumb," says Bungie's Frank O'Conner. "We know that people want it and we're trying to make it happen. I think the biggest problem for us for online co-op is that we have a situation where you can be in a Warthog with five troops, almost a mile away from the other player. That's a significant challenge. And there's lots of design things you could do to prevent that from happening, but they would make it not feel like Halo anymore. If we can make it happen in a way that works well, we will - and if it works badly, we won't."

So at this point it remains to be seen whether or not CVG's simply reading too much into this. Like Zero said, wait for the EGM article. Or better yet, the game.
