Fort Worth-where to eat/what to see
Sunday, July 8th, 2007 - 11:22pm
Just confirmed I'm going for two nights/three days Aug 31-Sept 2 (Fri-Sat-Sun).
Where shall I go to eat? I want local color, folks!
I think the Kimbell and maybe the American Airlines Museum; anything else?
Thanks in advance....

* Joe T. Garcia's is a great Mexican food place located in the stockyards. I believe they have menus during lunch, but only a few options for dinner. Also, they only take cash. They're good though.
* Freedbirds, a mission-style burrito place, is my favorite place of all-time, ever.
* The Fort Worth Museum of Science and History is having a Star Wars exhibit. I haven't been to it, but would like to before it leaves town.
* Of course, downtown (Sundance Square) is always a great, safe place to hang out. My favorite locations include the Flying Saucer and Billy Miner's. The parking garages, and I believe the other parking lots, are all free to park in over the weekend.
* Oh, and if you really like meat - Texas De Brazil.
* Here's another good reference: http://www.fortworth.com/
Good call. There is always plenty to do at Sundance Square. It has some good pubs with plenty of live music. And, yes, the parking is free on the weekends.
The Stockyards are a good place to go as well. There are plenty of good places to eat and hang out.
It's a little bit to the south of downtown, but I strongly recommend the Mexican Inn Cafe. I haven't been there in a long time, but they have wonderful food.
So what brings you to the area?

Kincaid's - Hamburgers. Good for lunch. CASH only, but they have an ATM in there.
Ovation - I just discovered this place. They have live Blues and Jazz bands. Call first cuz they might be full. And order the Chicken & Waffles, don't ask just do it.
Edelweis - Ft. Worth icon.
Thanks for the ideas, folks.

If you'd like, I live in Fort Worth, right near downtown and maybe we can go hang a bit.
Culturally:
Unfortunately, the Kimball Art Museum is currently closed for repairs (there was extensive water damage and they had to move the art and are repair/renovating it) however, the Modern Art Musem, which is near the Kimball (on University between Lancaster and Camp Bowie) is stellar and they currently have an awesome sculpture exhibit going on. There's also the Western Art Museum, if you're into that sort of thing, and if you're a big spender (though tickets can be got on the cheap and there's always something going on) you can check out a show at the Bass Hall in Downtown. The Star Wars Exhibit at the Science Museum is killer also and well worth the price of admission (which is like $20)
Drinks:
The Flying Saucer is nice downtown, but there's also The Ginger Man (not far from the Kimball/Modern) that serves a large bevy of beers as well (Mondays are the best time to hit the Saucer -- great drink specials during happy hour)
There are plenty of upscale bars and clubs now, if that's your thing -- I'd just pick up a FW Weekly and scan it for bars. One you might want to try is Embargo, which is new downtown (and near the Water Gardens and Texas Wesleyan Law School) which is a Cuban bar with good prices and an awesome atmosphere.. if you get there a little early 9-10ish, you can get a great place to sit and people watch while getting snockered. Get there later and it gets super-packed. Lots of cuties tend to congretate here too. There are a bunch of good bars and drink specials out of downtown (Billy Miner's has cheap beer prices, but I usually don't drink downtown and usually frequent smaller bars around the TCU area, but I like 'dives' where I can sit and talk with friends while drinking the happy juice)
Food:
You have to go by Joe T. Garcia's for Enchiladas/Margaritas/Fajitas (That's all they serve at night, but you won't be disappointed) Just expect to wait in line whenever you get there. There's a ton of seating (its like 90% outdoors) but I think half of FW tend to eat there nightly.
For Mexican, there are a billion places, depending on just how Mexican you want. I would recommend Fuzzy's Tacos near TCU or Meli's Taqueria near Hulen and Vickery for cheap, cheap killer tacos to die for -- Fuzzy's is fish and Meli's are anything from pork to chicken to beef. If you're looking for upscale 'Texan' food, the Riatta that's downtown has some great dishes and they have a lovely rooftop bar that overlooks downtown. There's also Risky's Barbeque downtown that have all you can eat rib nights and there are wonderful restaurants in the Stockyard area (up Main street from Downtown where Billy Bob's is) such as Risky Ritas that are also pretty tasty.
Downtown has free parking on the weekends and after 5 and parking is free if you get your ticket validated during the other times.
Feel free to PM me and I'll be happy to help in any way I can.

I forgot to ask if anyone thinks the C.R. SMith Museum (American Airlines) is worth going to see?
Oh, and the old west town.....

They have a really good zoo. It's not San Diego, but it's still a really good zoo.
I remember the stockyards from my childhood, and it was freakin' awesome back then, but I don't know if it would hold the same amount of fun for a grown-up.

The zoo is pretty good. They've done a lot of good things to it and have really made it a world class facility... Stock Yards are still pretty fun one time around -- you can catch some pretty good Mexican food and hit a couple of the bars on Main Street if that's your thing... if not, there's always those shopping places you can go and throw money at.

Just back from a very fun weekend in Fort WOrth- and thank you all, again, for the suggestions.
We got in early Thursday and hda a quick bite at Billy Miner's before the show; Thursday night was Riscky's- pretty good brisket; melted in my mouth....
Friday we did the Aht Scene after a terrific breakfast/lunch at The Spiral Diner...the Kimball (very nice and well organized) and the Amon Carter Museum (which had a great exhibition of the work of a Lancaster PA artist from the 1920s named Charles DeMuth)....stopped at the Botanic Garden, then went to...FRY'S! in Arlington. Always fun. Dinner at Mi Cocina (very tasty and affordable and quite the happening place downtown).
Saturday was Paris Diner- GREAT biscuits and waitresses...then to Grapevine- awful tourist-y (and that from someone born and raised in Gettysburg!)...sorry, folks...but the steam railroad was very cool- we drove back to meet it in the Stockyards, did a guided tour there and then had supper at Cattleman's Restaurant- good steak and service.
Sunday back to reality...but not before a trip to Waffle House and the Irving Fry's...two in one trip; a new record.....
We really liked Fort Worth- and we'll keep an eye on it for future tripping....

Ooh... the waffle house... you missed Ol' South Pancake House on University... Glad you had fun in my little town, by the way.
Next time, you'll have to check out the zoo (especially if you have little ones) and maybe grab the all you can eat ribs from Risky's in downtown.. you know that they actually have a couple around town and if you wanted a night in, for whatever reason, they make these killer family packs with all the works that is a beautiful thing to behold. I was lucky enough to have grown up about 5 minutes from one and my family made it a habit to grab their food about once a week.
