Carcassonne catch-all
Monday, July 2nd, 2007 - 12:44pm
Carcassonne is a mainstay in boardgaming circles. There are lots of reviews of the boardgame elsewhere (and hopefully by others in this thread), so I'm just going to talk about the XBLA implementation of the game. Also, it should be noted that I'm playing this on a 4:3 SDTV.

Screenshot from the 16:9 version.
Cons:
- Wasteful UI The game has two primary methods of indicating who the active player is (see pic). 1) The little colored circle to the left of each person's score. That circle will glow for the active player. 2) The score box of the active player is twice as wide as those of the other players. Even though the score boxes are semi-transparent, you will almost always shift the board around to view what's under them. By the midpoint of the game the board is very busy. So any extraneous visual UI will only detract from usability, and this is especially true with the double-wide active player score box. Also, as Danjo mentioned earlier, there's no way to tell who is speaking.
- Stepped zoom The zoom function uses discrete stepped maginifications rather than a continuous scale (like Catan). There have been many occasions when the most useful level of magnification has been between two of the arbitrary zoom levels. The fact that the game animates a smooth transition between any two zoom levels proves that a continuous scale zoom is possible with the engine, so there's no apparent excuse for this.
- Lack of multiple local players support over XBL Honestly, why?
- Pawn (meeple) type
It is sometimes difficult to discern whether a pawn represents a farmer, a guy on a road, a guy on a cloister, etc. In the board version, it is conventional to lay a pawn flat to indicate a farmer, and the XBLA version does this too. However, an opportunity was missed here. The boardgame uses generic pawns for cost reasons. The XBLA version doesn't have that restriction (although it might have a legal restriction), so they could have made the pawns a different shape for each of the roles.
Pros:
- Legal tile and pawn placement As soon as you draw your tile, the legal placement locations are indicated. Once you place the tile, your legal pawn placements are indicated. This might not seem like much, but that recognition takes time in the boardgame. Also, when you bounce your pawn around the available spots, it highlights the entirety of the area it would influence.
- Speed The XBLA version takes roughly 20%-30% less time to complete a game.
- It's Carcassonne
This is the big one. The foundation of this game is as solid as they come. It's fairly casual, but extrodinarily flexible. It plays just as well for 2 players as it does for 5. You'll never have to wait for a quorum to start.
Conclusion: On balance, the XBLA version of Carcassonne is a good rendition of an excellent game. Buy it.

On the UI comments, there are some options in the game to move/resize the UI. I haven't played with it, but that might address some of your concerns.

I am still dumbfounded as to the lack of hotseat play.

Those only allow you to shift all of them left/right and the elements on the left and right sides of the screen closer/further apart. So in a word, no.

I haven't played it yet, though I downloaded it last week. Really looking forward to trying this out soon, with fellow goodjers if possible!
The game looks great, runs smoothly, and is an excellent value. Any criticism I have is merely nitpicks. The game looks a lot like Catan, but this game isn't the labor of love like that game. There are some obvious interface features lacking that plant it a full rung or two underneath Catan, although Carcassonne is still a lot of fun.

This is a great deal easier to play than the board game, just for set up and scoring automation. As has been said already, my biggest gripe is the lack of being able to play with my wife locally and with others over XBL. There is also no visual cue as to who is speaking. Other than that, I really like the implementation.

They should have allowed this with people on your friends list or in casual games, at least.

I picked this game up last night and played for about 4 hours. Besides the zoom not being like Catan and not getting how the farmer part of the game worked for a couple of hours. I really liked it and had a blast playing. What other games are like Carcassonne and Catan that I've missed, these are the first two games I have picked up.
Also we should have a GWJ night for Carcassonne and Catan.

I found the rules on farm scoring the international way:
Look on pages 9 and 10 of this illustrated PDF.

two pages in a PDF covering scoring for a farm... thank God for XBLA. This game would've lasted all of 1 or 2 games tops in my house.
That being said, someone send me an invite, I need to get schooled in Casserole (as Gumbie puts it).

I need to get into Worms, but between Carcassonne, Catan and Pac-Man CE I don't have enough time in the day.

Indeed. A board game night is long overdue. These two games and I'm sure there are more to come.

I own the boardgame version of this. The one with all the tiles and such. It's a fun and great game. Better to play with 3 or more people. 2 player games get old. I enjoy it a lot.

I just read on joystiq that for a limited time the full version will be completely free to download over xbox live.
I've never played any iteration of it before, so I'm going to give it a try.
I apologize if this was posted elsewhere, I did a search and didnt see it.

I'm going to download Carcassonne tonight and hopefully give it a try some time tonight or this weekend. However I don't have any GWJ on my XBoxLive friends list. Can someone throw me an invite if they see me on? My ID is Tkkyl

So I loaded up the game, went through the tutorial and thought to myself that this was completely not the type of game I'd ever play. I started one board on "easy" and wound up playing for another few hours. It really hooked me and although I'm convinced I still suck at it, I found myself having a blast and always wanting to just play one more round of it.
Its still free on Xbox Live, not sure how long that lasts, but even if you don't have time for it now, I'd highly recommend downloading it while its free and getting back to it at a later date.

Go ahead and add me, if you like, Tkkyl. My 360 blew up this past weekend so I'll be offline for the next 3-4 weeks until I get a replacement from MS. Once I do, though, I'm usually up for a game. (ID - ubrakto)
