Death in Sakkara

We're pleased to announce a new feature here at Gamers With Jobs. It's called Act Casual.

Each Monday we'll post a bit of freeware goodness to help you survive the upcoming work week. As the name implies, the focus will be on immediately playable gaming diversions, of the type that we hope will offer moments of respite from your dreary, workaday lives under the watchful eye of The Man.

This week's selection is Death in Sakkara, a campy, noirish tale of archaeological intrigue and mysticism set in 1920's Egypt. Presented in vintage comic style, it's an adventure game that blends traditional point-and-click puzzle solving with a variety of unique Flash-based puzzles.

Released episodically a couple of years back in conjunction with a BBC History docudrama, Death in Sakkara garnered industry acclaim but barely made the rounds in gamer circles. Which is really too bad, because few Flash-based games are as perfectly tuned in terms of their art direction and presentation. There's a lot to chew on in terms of content, and you could easily spend the better part of an evening with the game.

One word of caution: in true adventure-game style, there are a couple of maddenly frustrating puzzles. Nothing that some quick walkthrough Googling can't solve, though. And the game's so engaging, don't be surprised if you end up feeling compelled to see it through to the end.

If you'd like to suggest a game for Act Causal, send your comments to contact@gamerswithjobs.com.

Sounds cool. Hopefully I'll find the time to play this. The thing about puzzle games, I've discovered as I get older, is that they tend to benefit from uninterrupted devotion of attention. It seems that having crossed over into adulthood, I don't have the ability to give longterm focus to a game like I used to. Examples of such games on my pile of shame: Alone in the Dark 4 and Myst 3.

I can only nod in recognition as I read this although I did finish this little gem right now. Only had to look to the interweb for help once, too

Great job, guys.

Really? Then if it hadn't been the telescope, the tunnels in part 4 would've damn sure made you quit.

Neat game. It didn't seem to know how to end, but hey, it's a BBC Flash Game.

I'd like to say thanks for posting this. I love this style of game. To those saying it's too hard already, quit yer bitchin lol. This would have made a nice live arcade game, especially at the end trying to get 100% with achievements and special rewards and what not.

Yeah the stargazing bit seems frustrating at first. The solution is a lot simpler than you'd think, and your time spent initially poring over the star details trying to figure out positioning will be rewarded The tunnels also aren't that hard. Beat it first go, and had no trouble on subsequent runs for rewards, again seems more complicated than it actually is, speaking as someone that hates adventure game mazes usually. Oh and they even threw in a bone for sliding puzzle haters (it's something most people have been DYING to do for sliding puzzles forever).

I'd say stick with it, it's a pity no one made any money on this but good for us. We get to play for free
