Did anyone else pick one up? I walked in the Apple Store, there wasn't any line but the store was busy. They seemed to have a lot of them. Walked out with the 8 gig.

I'm really digging it so far. Once I figure out how to get it on my wifi network, I'm going to try to make a post from it. The screen is beautiful. Calls sound great.

Looks very cool, but not $499-599 (plus two-year service plan!) cool. Kinda like the first iPods, you'll get a lot more for a lot less later on.

At least that's what I'm waiting for.

Yeah, I'm glad I'm not part of the iCult. This has no appeal to me. So if my MP3 player dies, my phone also runs out of juice? No thanks. I'm trying to convince my wife to let me get rid of my cell phone, not have someone invent new ways for me to keep it.

Wow, everyone kinda crapped on Ulairi there.

But, I agree with Legion. I think it's cool, just not $499 - $599 cool.

Good for you, Ulairi, on getting one, I'm glad that it's working well for you. It looks like a device that would be a ton of fun to play with.

The iPhone looks nice, but it's definitely overpriced right now. UMTS support is a standard feature, which pretty much any cellie over here offers by now - the iPhone doesn't. Same for memory card slots. And the point that you'll be forced to sign up at a specific carrier - which people usually don't factor in in terms of pricing - doesn't make it appealing either. I simply can't justify spending to much money on hardware and subscription for something that lacks some standard aspects. Not to mention the point that everyone who buys one now gets to beta-test that thing. In one or two years from now on there'll be versions that a) are cheaper, b) got the first-gen flaws ironed out c) feature aforementioned aspects and d) let me pick the phone carrier of my choice - and that's when it'll be more interesting to me.

Always glad to see more competition around, wish Apple hadn't teamed up with just one particular carrier though. Same will be done over here, and it'll be only one of the big carriers to get that advantage.

The service is actually surprising inexpensive. 450 minutes a month plus a FULL data plan for only $60. Usually data plans alone are at least $40. While the phone itself is pretty pricey, the service plan is a great deal.

Tell that to the millions of iPods and Nanos sold that weren't the max capacity.

I'm with you, Ulairi.

It's a very cool convergence item, and when you add up the cost for the functions it provides, it's not outrageous in price. I'm not a mac guy, i'm a tech omnivore, so i don't think i've got kool aid on me. And i don't want more tech devices in my pocket, i want less. This does a great job of letting me have some music, podcasts, and vid on my phone, as well as access to google for those emergency questions, or directions.

Plus, i was already an AT&T customer, all i did was add the data plan to my contract. The added cost of $20 for unlimited data seemed pretty reasonable, i've looked for data plans in the past and that's a good deal.

I think its cool you got an iphone, they are pretty neat little devices.
I doubt I'll pick one up for a couple of reasons.

1) I don't want to switch providers
2) They do not have an open operating system, so I can't put Ethereal, and Nmap on it.

I think it's great that you didn't wait in line for five days for a phone, you'll enjoy it and you didn't stand outside with a bunch of dirty people, that's the most important thing.

It's interesting, and my carrier in Canada (Rogers) has exclusive access to them.

However, I will restrain my excitement until after pricing plans are announced.. Data plans in Canada are -crippling-. No such thing as unlimited data, by anyone, anywhere. Given Apple seems to require unlimited data.. this could get very expensive.

I still -really- want a Helio Ocean. Curiously, the whole iPhone thing made me really start looking at windows smartphones. .NET support + IronPython + UMTS service == Oooooh. Delish.

You should be able to activate it in iTunes, no call to AT&T necessary. Did that system fail on you?

Bollocks. You simply don't have to buy something the minute it becomes available. Let others do the testing and have the manufacturers iron potential flaws out and grab it eventually. Why would anyone have to buy let's say Windows Vista on day one? Sure, at some point most of us will do the switch, but it's way more comfortable doing that after a year or two, with a stable and solid set of drivers around and Microsoft having provided a first service pack. If you were one of the first people to go for HDTV, you missed out on standards the industry had not defined yet at that point (HDMI, HDCP etc. etc. etc.). I have not a single doubt will provide UMTS support at some point, because that is already way more common over here - it's not like Macbooks only have USB 1.1 and 56k modems. If one waits for that specific feature, one is pretty much set, because it's not like the next cellie standard will be around in the year after that.

Yes the system is failing lots of people. I had a corporate discount on my previous plan, which the pamphlet said in ineligible for the plan. Fine. But what isn't on the pamphlet is the fact that you have to call 3 different departments at AT&T to take that flag off of your account and then, like any brand new MMO, people are crashing the registration servers right now, and it was told to me 4-24 hours of processing time to get my phone activated. AND my current phone no longer works.

Other than the registration headaches, the iPhone is really cool, and yes there will be better ones in the future, but this by far is the coolest gadget to have come out in years..

I wouldn't mind one. The interface looks good. Only problems, apart from any UK release date, are that the thing is a mugger-magnet, concerns about privacy with Google apps and the fact I'd look like a twat that's buying it because it's an Apple, rather than because it's any good.

Heres what happens when you marry a good company (Apple) with a crappy company (Cellular ones.. not just Cingular/AT&T).

After 2 hours on hold when the Itunes software told me to call since it couldnt activate the moronic lady at AT&T told me I could not activate my Iphone with my Cingular cell number because I was a corporate customer.. the only way I could activate (ever) was to start a new service plan under my name with a new cell number and carry around 2 cell phones.

Because.. wait for it..

"Apple doesn't support Corporate Email"

So my Iphone sits unused until perhaps Monday when one of my corporate reps can sort out this mess..
