It's time for you to learn to tunnel around filters.

That is not so easy either, all outbound ports are blocked. Also any "Anonymous Surfing" is blocked also. Unless you have someting I am unaware of.

You would think that, but as he points out, DoD is notoriously good at blocking proxy sites.

My personal suggestion, and I say this from ABSOLUTELY NO PERSONAL EXPERIENCE *cough*, would be to set up a server at home and use that as a proxy. If you can install SSH at work, use that to tunnel a secure connection home, and from there use remote desktop + X to launch firefox. That should do you up quite nicely. In theory. Because I'm an upstanding young Airman, and would never, ever do such a thing. Ever.

Yeah, you need to be careful about getting around restrictions like that if you're not the one in charge of making them.

If you do decide to figure out a workaround, I would recommend that you setup your home server to listen on 443 (standard port for https). This has the advantage of looking like a secured web connection, something they'd expect to see encrypted traffic on.

It's a federal felony where myself and armedbushido work, which is precisely why I HAVE NEVER EVER DONE IT AND NEVER EVER WILL. IT IS BAD AND WRONG. However, if he's insistant, it's the only workable solution.

That would indeed be the google recommended method.

Ack, didn't know you worked for the DoD. Not too terribly sure about trying to escape those filters... (Not out of fear for their competence, just government agencies are paranoid)

I did manage once to convince a boss that I should be allowed to surf some sites that would normally be blocked. (They blocked gmail for heavens sake.) My argument was that if other employees could take a 15 minute smoke break every hour, then I could take a 15 minute surf a game site or scifi.com break, since I did not smoke AND was still able to work my job while surfing. He reasonably agreed.

Sometimes it does not hurt to ask.

Do this:

a) do you have an office-issued laptop ? Maybe they can give you one.
b) chances are it has Bluetooth
c) if you have a Bluetooth-enabled phone like Samsung A920(sp?), it may also have undocumented Internet access that is accessible via a Google search and an additional $15 per month (if its Sprint)
d) Bring a cell charger to work, connect the cell to it, and connect the laptop via Bluetooth to your cellphone.

I've done this, it worked. It gave me about 35-40k/s with Sprint (they have higher speeds if you're willing to go official and pay $50 per month), which was enough for sites like GWJ but not enough for Youtube.

What about using a mobile device of some kind (WiFi, EVDO or UMTS) and using it to surf the web?

I use an RSS reader on my WinMo device occasionally, and sometimes post to forums and such, too.

I, too, work for the DoD and dread the day I come in and find GWJ blocked. It hasn't happened yet. But YouTube and PhotoBucket are blocked, so I can't see most of the Post a Video thread and a good part of the Post a Picture thread.

(Guys, use www.Imageshack.us for the pictures, I can still see those.)
