Anyone try the Star Wars: Starship Battles miniature game?

My coworkers and I have been regularly playing Settlers of Catan during our lunch break but there has been some interest in getting a miniatures strategy game going. I just saw that Wizards of the Coast has a Star Wars themed starship miniatures strategy game that just might fit what everyone's looking for. Has anyone ever tried it out? Is it any good? Can you finish a match in an hour or two? Any details and opinions, or even other lunch time gaming idea (new thread coming soon) would be greatly appreciated!

For those interested, this is what I'm talking about...

General Questions

Q: How is the Star Wars Miniatures Game different from the Star Wars Roleplaying Game?

A: In general, it is a streamlined version of the Star Wars Roleplaying Game combat rules, simplified so that it's easier to run several different characters at once and play through a battle quickly. Here are some specific features.

Initiative: Each round, you roll initiative for your whole squad. You don't roll for each individual characte?. Each round, players take turns activating 2 characters at a time until all the players have activated all their characters.

Movement: During its turn, a character can move up to 6 squares and attack, attack and then move up to 6 squares, or move up to 12 squares (but not attack).

Damage: All damage and hit points are measured in multiples of 10. A Stormtrooper, for example, has 10 Hit Points and deals 10 points of damage with its blaster rifle.

Force Powers: Some characters have a Force rating, which is the number of points they can spend to use Force powers, reroll bad rolls, or move faster.

Q: Sometimes a card's rules text isn't quite the same as the description in the glossary or a rules insert. Which takes precedence?

A: In general, a glossary entry expands upon the rather terse language printed on the stat card. It does not supersede the card's text. Card text always trumps glossary text unless the glossary specifically mentions overriding card text, or published errata or an FAQ confirms that the glossary is correct. When there is no hint text for an ability that normally has it (as is the case on simple abilities such as Double Attack on crowded stat cards), the glossary definition or the most recent errata is the final authority.
Etiquette

Q: Is it legal to keep my characters' stats secret during play? The rules say that you "reveal your squad" just before placing terrain. Is it good enough to just tell my opponent the names of my characters, so I can save some of their abilities as a surprise later?

A: No. Your stat cards must be made available to other players on request.

Nope. The only Space faring strategy game I've played is Starfleet Battles and it's nothing like this at all.

I've been waiting to hear about it before buying as well. The fact that you have to buy packages of random ships makes it less appealing.

There's another Star Wars ship combat game, called Star Wars PocketModel TCG that uses cardstock punchouts for minis. Hopefully this will make it cheaper.

The Star Wars PocketModel TCG game is not a miniatures game. It's basically a card game, but you build the ships out of the cards. It's not positional in any way. You don't move the ships around on the table, you just keep them in front of you and play the game. Kinda dumb in my opinion. Feels like a real movie license tie-in quickgrab to me.

The Star Wars Starship Miniatures game is different. It is a positional game and you move your ships around the board for position. However, it is also random (in that the ships are random in the packs like baseball cards) which can make it more expensive. And I've heard the rules kinda suck.

The Star Wars Miniatures game (with the little guys) is actually pretty fun. I like the rules set as a simple, simple miniatures game. Plus, you can usually find enough of the pieces online or on eBay to outfit your squads without buying a ton of boosters.

If you're looking for a fun, simple and cheap space combat game, I would suggest StarFight. It's great.

I think I might have owned this at some point in time. I am not certain.

That game signaled the over-dilution of the Settlers of Catan license.

It has some differences from the main Settlers of Catan game. More based upon who can expand the quickest and grab the important commodities first. You don't actually see the commodities until you land on the planet. There are few technological advances you can get by befriending certain alien races. Some much better than others. If you know how to min max the game and take advantage of the rules you will win each time. Once you have all the players know these things then it's a race to see who can get where the quickest with dice rolls.

While it's a fun diversion from the core game the core game is still better.
