Stargate Series Finale - Thoughts?
Saturday, June 23rd, 2007 - 8:14am
For those who watched it, what were your impressions. I have a lot of mixed feelings and while I think it was a good episode, I do not think it was a good series finale. I know the journey continues after this (several made for TV movies) but some closure for Sam and Jack O'Neil, maybe? There are just things I would have liked to see. I do not think it was anywhere near as controversial as the Sopranos were, for instance.
There are two kinds of men in the world, those with loaded guns and those who dig. You dig.

I thought it was a good episode right up to the part where they started visibly aging. Then it lost me. I mean, here is your series finale and most of the events of the episode never happened. It reminded me of why I was inclined to stop watching the show, but I wanted to follow it through to the end. I know they have the direct-to-DVD movies coming, but I was hoping for a little more out of this episode.

I liked it. I'm sad to see it go since there are so few sci-fi shows around.
As far as quality you have to remember that it got the ax fairly suddenly and they had to close up some loose ends pretty abruptly. Like Adria ascension and the Asgard thing. If they had an extra season like BSG it may have worked out a bit better.
On a side note, SG: Atlantis finale was great INCLUDING seeing Kaylee as the new head doctor!!

That's why I'm hoping that the movies will be better.
I couldn't agree more.

Stargate
I couldn't agree more. Rigil by himself was more entertaining than the Stargate Series. SG1 ran 5 season way too long.

The ending episode was not a disappointment, but I'd prefer they did something original instead of rehashing their own, older and superior episode called "2010".
P.S. Hallowed are the Ori.
Not strictly in this thread, but did anyone notice that yes, Samantha Carter is going to Atlantis, but(!), they said as the 'new' commander(?). No more Weir? Dual leadership? Or...?

Atlantis' commander has been a terrible, terrible actress. She's been killing the show since episode 1 and I sure hope she gets replaced.
I noticed that as well. She did take quite a hit at the end of the show. I did not think she was bad at all.
I've also enjoyed SG-1 the last few years. It is a show that definitely was able to sprinkle in stand alone episodes and the overall arc quite well.

Ah Stargate. That such a mediocre movie could spawn such a series.
Spoiler Alert!
The final episode. I was fully prepared ... dimmed the lights, turned off the cell phone and had a bottle of whisky ready. Mostly, I was disappointed in how they did it. Granted, I know they got the axe before they were ready to wrap up the show. But I saw the end coming a year back when Richard Dean Anderson (mostly) left the show. I fully expected (hoped) for the Asgard to go out in a blaze of glory, taking as many Ori ships with them as they could. Instead of rushing back to their planet to drink the cosmic Kool-Aid right as the fight started. The rest of the episode just kinda dragged on. The only scene that had me charged up was when Teal'c stood in the time-warp-proof force field as the ship blew up. You know he had that Teal'c look on his face that said "I'm such a bad ass that even 50 years passing and a capital ship exploding around me won't stop me from being such a bad ass."
Maybe if they didn't have Atlantis and the in-development spinoff of the spinoff in the wings they would have made more of an effort? That's what I try and tell myself anyway. Also, keep in mind that two Stargate DVD movies are curently in development, hopefully to bring further conclusion to the main storyline.
As for Dr. Weir, it's all over the fan sites that she is leaving the show next season. They killed of the doctor and are working Teyla's real-life pregancy into the show, so big changes are in the works for next season. No word on the how and why as of yet. Carter's character is infinitely more interesting then Weir, so I am looking forward to the shift.
Also an interesting point, has any other show migrated as many other sci-fi actors into the cast? They now have two actors from Farscape and one from Firefly (both good shows tragically cut short). Why not drag in Shatner, Nimoy and Hammill? Heck, it can be like the All-Star game of sci-fi.

I enjoy the Stargate franchise for what it is, a fun never too serious Sci-Fi story.
I knew going into the SG-1 series finale that there was more to come so I never expected too much from it to begin with and I was pretty satisfied with what I got. We'll see what happens with the movies.
What kept me coming back to the show through out the years were some of the characters. In the beginning Richard Dean Anderson's Jack O'Neill kept me coming back, Ben Bowder's Cameron Mitchell filled in pretty nicely for him in his own way and Claudia Black's Vala Mal Doran was always fun to watch. They made the series for me, and without them I might not have stuck around. Having stuck around I grew attached to all the characters and so I watched the whole thing. I agree that the show went several years past it's peak but I felt the characters I enjoyed watching always made it worth it, and because of that I saw some pretty good TV. The show did have it's misses but there were always several hits during a season where everything from the acting to the action was great.
Atlantis is the same for me. There are certain characters that just keep me coming back, Joe Flanigan's John Sheppard, and David Hewlett's Dr. Mckay. They make the show for me and now I have grown attached to the series. Not all of the shows are great but there have been some gems, I thought the season finale for example was one of them. I can't wait for the new season.
For anyone looking for great Science Fiction, check out the new Doctor Who. It just keeps getting better and better and it was never too bad to begin with. This season in particular has been awesome.
