Medieval II: Round Robin-Round 2

Executive
Location: Richmond, VA

The dog days of summer releases are upon us, and since this is supposedly a slower time in the gaming season, I'd like to revive the round robin idea for Medieval II: Total War from Christmas time. The timing of the first round robin probably wasn't the best, but it was highly enjoyable for those who participated, and hopefully for those who read the accounts of the kings.

Mods, factions, game patches, everything is up in the air, and open for discussion. I would like to find 3-5 people who want to play, or more if we don't want to do multiple kings. Hopefully the rush to get your turn in before the holidays won't exist as bad as it did during the Thanksgiving-Christmas holiday. If it takes all summer to get accounts/stories out of people, so be it.

Now taking applications.

Any other takers? Vega, FeralPug, Minase, CEJ, Certis, I am looking at you.

I'm still looking into mods right now, Koning. Any faction suggestions? I've personally never played the HRE or France, but I am game for almost anyone except Denmark (long live the Danish Empire).

I haven't played this one in awhile... did they fix or mod out all of the annoying bugs yet?

I've been playing the Deus Volt mod recently, and it does a bang-up job of ironing out the imperfections. Not perfect still, but damn fun. If we do the writing again, I may just add in something for kicks.

I actually just picked the game up last week and was thinking about re-reading the first thread. I'd like to participate if there's room. If not, I will still enjoy reading everyone's accounts.

There is plenty of room Montalban. So far it's you, me, and Koning_Floris (and possibly Prederick).

I'll look for the Deus Volt mod Pred. I've only been playing the 1.2 patch with no mods, and have found it to be much more enjoyable than 1.1. The computer still makes some wacky decisions, but is much more aggressive than before.

I would not mind throwing my hat in if there is room. I have been playing total war something since Shogun and MTWII was my big xmas present...

Where can I find the rules for the round robin or will there be all new rules?

Plenty of space prof. The rules are as follows:

No reloading-this is a play as it happens game. If you screw up, you have to live with the consequences.
You play until your king dies, then email the save game to the next person. We will all be playing with the same mods (though none have been agreed upon as of now).
Provide a write-up of what is going on so the next person has an idea of what they are getting into. You can write it up however you want-short story, overall summary, whatever.

We are still working out the details and seeing who wants in. Right now we have 4 people. Time for some faction decisions.

I looked up Pred's suggestion for the Deus Vult mod:

Looks interesting. Let me know what everyone thinks. Pred, does the mod make the king die faster?

I haven't vested a TON of time into it, and frankly, for the kind of game you're all talking about, i'd advise just sticking with vanilla and going with it. That said, characters are much more lavishly detailed now, and the game is designed to take longer. Kings can die from a myriad of things now, and aren't neccessarily the tanks they were in battle before. YMMV.

I am totally neutral to whatever we choose. I just hope I can keep up with you guys. I haven't played in quite some time, and I am more the guy for the heroic real time battles then for managing an entire kingdom.

I have no problem with longer games, as I don't want this to be rushed like it was last time. If it takes all summer, I don't have a problem. The only thing is I don't want the people playing it to get bored with the game.

Vanilla works for me, as long as we are patched to 1.2 (as it fixes many bugs and makes the AI more aggresive in the campaign). For starting kingdoms, I'll start by suggesting Portugal, Russia, or Hungary.

Vanilla fine with me as well. Weighing the three suggested kingdoms makes for some serious food for thought. With Russia we will eventually be dealing with Byzantium and the Khan. Hungary has Venice, Byzantium, and Poland not to mention the other Italian states. Portugal... dealing with Spain and Moors... might not be too bad

I would like to partake if there's still room.
I would also suggest that the patched vanilla version is probably the least problematic to set up. Portugal sounds fun...

Montalban

The game will be vanilla version 1.2, very hard/very hard, with portugal as the sacrificial country to start. If we get through five people, and no one else wants to join in, then the first person will continue. Also, if the unthinkable happens, and we get overrun the first few turns, we'll start again with a new country.

Anyone want to go first? If no one volunteers, I'll start late tonight or tomorrow.

Come here, my son, and allow me to speak. Today is your birthday, and by our laws and rites, you inherit everything of your father's. I name you, Affonso Henrique, heir to the throne of Portugal. You, and you alone, may learn these secrets on this day.

Know that our grasp on the throne is strong, and that our country prospers, split as it is between the spanish kingdom. Our world, though, will not allow us to rest within our own borders. Even now, the filthy moors to the south gather an army to resist the Reconquista, God's reclamation of our lands. His Holiness has commanded it, and I will not disobey the Chosen of God. We march tomorrow, after your coronation, to take the city of Cordoba. We will crush the moors that infest this city, and once it is ours, we will purge it of its unwanted moorish residents. I do not fear the moors, as God is on our side to remove their blight upon the body of Europe, and we fight with the blessing of God through his Holiness, Pope Gregory. I am also sending word to General Johao in Pamplona to take the unaligned town of Zaragoza, to cut off the spanish advancement to the east.

Know that I am placing our kingdom in great danger with this order, my son. If the king of the Spanish states, Alfonso el Valiente, learns that he is cut from the sea, and his path to Valencia blocked by our armies, he may strike at Lisbon or Pamplona, and I fear we will not have the strength to repel such an invasion. We must watch the reaction of the Spanish king, so I must send your sister Maria to arrange marriage to his son. Be at peace, before you react; I do not believe he will arrange for his heir to marry her, as he will assume treachery from me. We will then offer the rights of trade, further delaying him from seeking land beyond his borders with these negotiations.

Know this, my son, for it is the most important of the secrets I impart unto you this day: The kingdom of Portugal can never coexist with the Spanish kingdom, and one kingdom must be forever destroyed if the other is to flourish. We both seek to rule the same lands, this, our blessed Iberian peninnsula. We both wish the same goals, the destruction of the moorish influence on our lands, and the spread of Christianity to the lands beyond Europe. The wealth of the peninsula is not sufficient to grow both kingdoms beyond our mountains to the north, or the untamed lands to the south. Only his Holiness's commands have kept the peace between our kingdoms. I must charge you, my son, that should it not come to pass in my lifetime, you must remove King Alfonso and all his seed from the land, thus ensuring that Portugal can rise to challenge the mightiest nations upon this earth. You must carry this out regardless of his Holiness's anger or threats, or Portugal shall never be secure or prosper. Swear upon this, as my only son and heir to my throne and kingdom, that you will see this through.

Go now, my son, and prepare yourself for the ceremony. Pray for your immortal soul, and for the wisdom to guide this kingdom when I am no longer king. We march to battle on the morrow.

(turn 1 starts tomorrow)

Turn 4

As the sun set on the city of Cordoba, King Henrique of Portugal gazed out from the city square to the fires and streams of soldiers still working their way through the city. His armor was dented and bloody, though none of it his, from the assult on the city in the early afternoon. "Your people do not know when to accept their fate, your majesty," Henrique said to the body of the Moorish Sultan Tahar, grinning at his old foe. "Though I don't need to tell you that." For 6 months emissaries from Portugal had entreated the Moors to become a vassal state. The 800 man army had surrounded Cordoba, lending weight to the Portugese argument. In the end the army had stormed Codoba's walls, and only Sultan Tahar and his bodyguards stood in their way. Henrique had challenged the sultan to single combat after storming the walls and taking the gates. Henrique had trained for over 20 years for that meeting, and the results were not in the sultan's favor.

"Father," Prince Affonso said in his quiet, deep voice, walking up behind his father, "what should we do with the city? Cordoba's citizens are out in the streets, rioting now that the garrison is gone."

"Order the men to put down the riots by any means necessary," commanded Henrique, turning towards the south gate. "Butcher anyone who opposes our forces. Take whatever treasure is available."

"Of course, father." Affonso turned and gave the orders, unconcerned that the orders he gave would cause the death of over 1000 people. "We had a visitor during the assult. It seems that King Alfonso of Spain has sent his daughter to negotiate a trade agreement. She was initially sent to Lisbon, but was sent here after we had left."

Henrique smiled, knowing the bait that the spanish king was offering. "Tell her we will accept her father's gracious offer. Ask her to..."

"Your majesty!" screamed Captain Christovan, commander of the Portugese ground forces, his great bulk straining in the confines of his armor. "A Moorish army has been spotted by our spies two days march to the west of the city! Tamar, the sultan's son and heir, flies his banner at the lead of the army! Their numbers are near double our own! We must retreat!" Chirstovan wheezed, his panic causing spittle to drip down his many chins.

"The moors strike more quickly than I had thought," exclaimed Henrique, his face deep in thought. After a moment, he turned to his son. "Prepare our calvary and jinetes to leave the city. We will move to the forest north of the city. Captain Christovan," Henrique turned and faced the quivering Chrstovan, who glanced over his shoulder at the west gate, as if the moors would attack him at any second. "You are in command of the ground forces here, Chris..."

"B.....but your majesty, you would leave us here with no horse?" stammered Christovan, visibly shaking. "We will be trampled underneath the heathen's boots..."

"You will hold the walls until the moors have assembled their towers and rams. Just before they begin their assult, you will sally forth from the gates and attack the heathens. Your primary target will be the sultan's heir," commanded Henrique, gesturing his page for his horse.

Christovan whitened, with panic clearly displayed across his fat face. "We are to attack the heathens head on? When they have over three men to our one?"

Henrique began mounting his horse, swinging his leg over the saddle. "You will attack as I have stated. We will charge from the rear, and crush the moors between our forces. You have your...."

"W.....why not stay in the city and wait for reinforcements from Lisbon?" whined Christovan. "Jahao can bring his army from Zaragota. His army was nearly intact after taking the city."

Henrique stared at his shaking captain from his horse, fury plainly obvious across his face. "You will obey the orders I have given! The moorish army is composed mostly of conscripted peasents, and are no match for our forces. Our horse will destroy their resolve, and they will flee the field. By God, you will follow my orders!"

Christovan did not appear to hear his king. "Yes, Jahoa can be here within 3 months, and we can easily hold the moors off of the walls until then. Yes, that is the best way." Christovan turned started to walk away, ignoring his king.

Henrique snarled, drew his sword, and dug his spurs into his horse towards the retreating captain. With a vicious downward swipe of his sword, Henrique severed Christovan's head and left shoulder from the body. Blood sprayed the already splattered king.

"Fool," said Henrique, still holding his bloody sword, and stared at the twitching body. "His cowardice would have infected our entire army. Affonso!"

"Yes, father?" said Affonso, watching the the entire display close to his sire, his hand ready to administer the long overdue sentence to the blubbering Christovan.

"Who was this coward's second in command?"

"Diego de Lemos," said Affonso. "Most of Christovan's ideas and commands came through him, as he overrode most of Christovan's absurd orders. de Lemos also lead the attack on the walls. He has shown great promise."

"Go to him immediately," commanded Henrique, wiping his blade, but not sheathing his sword. "Tell him he is in command now. Give him the exact orders that this fool ignored. Promise him promotion to general if he is successful and does not waste the lives of his men. Then prepare our horse to leave the city. We leave after nightfall."

"It will be done, father. What of the sultan? Should we send his body to his son?" Affonso motioned for his horse.

Henrique turned to regard the body of his foe. "No. Nail his body to the wall above the west gate." He smiled, and pointed his sword at the fallen leader. "We must show the son his father's fate. And his."

I will probably take some time for me to take care of the problems. Maybe I will step in later, when I've resolved the problems.
