The Darkness Catch-All Thread

I'm a little surprised that there hasn't been more chatter about this game on the forums, especially since it is being released at the end of the month (6/26). I am really excited about it, since it is coming from the same developers as Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay. I also used to read the comics (The Darkness) back in college, so I was also a little leery of this project, since it was a comic book property, but after seeing the in game footage those fears have been put to rest.

Anyone else looking forward to this? Does anyone know if we will be getting a demo?

I would love to play a demo for this, the videos at Gametrailers look great and GWJ has had nothing but praise for Riddick. I don't need any new games though, so hopefully it's the "that's awesome but I can hold off for a bit" variety of game.

Yeah, I'm thinking this is a mainly single player experience, so I would think you could get in whenever. There may be some tacked on multi-player experience, but that's not what I would want it for anyway.

Mike Patton is voicing the lead character. I'd almost pick it up just to check that out.

But yeah, Riddick is one of my favorite games of the last ten years. The Darkness is a blind buy for me unless the reviews are really nasty.

I think that is going to be the reaction of many people about this game. I think it could have the potential of slipping through the cracks, but maybe not. It is coming out for both the PS3 and the 360.

I'd actually think about getting for the PS3 if not for the fact that the PS3 controllers sucks.. and it lacks rumble.. so 360 for me.

Yeah, this game has been on my list for a while, and I'm very much looking forward to it. Even if it's half as good as Riddick I'll be happy.

Wikipedia wrote:

The comic's central theme is the power known as The Darkness, and its wielders. It is an ageless power dating back beyond human history. It is linked with the Angelus and the Witchblade. The Darkness is passed down a family line from father to son, leaving the previous user (and taking his life) as his first child is conceived. The power then manifests in the child on his 21st birthday. Darkness users can create anything they desire with the darkness, even sentient beings, but anything they make will crumble to dust in the light. The Darkness powers are quite deadly, allowing the user to call forth darkling minions to aid them, and even survive gunshots. The power can also be used to maul and feed on people.

The Darkness powers do not function unless it is dark, but some users can also manipulate this by creating their own shadows/darkness e.g smoke grenades, being underground, turning off lights in a room, etc. Wherever there is light, there is always darkness.

Jackie Estacado is the current wielder of The Darkness and Don of the Franchetti Family mob. He is a very violent and sexual man who, until gaining the powers of The Darkness, lived life in the fast lane. Of course, because of the possibility of impregnating a woman causing his own death through the mysterious ways of the darkness, Jackie tries to refrain from sex, to his great frustration. Though Jackie lives life on the wrong side of the law and can kill without remorse, he has a high set of morals he follows and always tries to protect those he cares about.

If you don't have good internet access this may not be tremendously useful to you, but I hope you can get to it eventually.
GameTrailers Clips

They really show off where the game is going. It looks like a fun shooter with some very cool abilities tied thematically to darkness. The story looks a bit weak, but okay. You play a young mob hitman who turns against/is forced to fight your uncle, the Don. He has an army of mobsters and you have ass-kicking darkness powers.

They include snake appendages that have ranged melee attacks, pick up and move large objects (dumpsters, maybe cars), and scout ahead to stealth kill unsuspsecting enemies. You can also summon darkness minions ("darklings") to cause mayhem and bloodshed, which they will eagerly pursue. They is likely more I don't know about but it looks like fun and polished and Starbreeze (the devs from Riddick) have some credibility and good faith built up.

What made Riddick such a refreshing game was the fully realized world in which you were exploring. It was fairly linear but you never really noticed since it was so immersive. If The Darkness can create a similar feeling, it'll be a hit. Well, at least a cult hit.

Does anyone know how long this is supposed to be? I'd really be interested in picking it up but if it's 7-10 hours, I'm not spending $70 on it and I'll just rent it instead. If it's 15 hours like Riddick, I'll probably jump in.

Riddick took you 15 hours?

Apparantly this is longer then Riddick so there you go.

Completing everything including the optional stuff without any walkthroughs I think took me between 13 and 15. I could just be remembering wrong though.

I love hearing outsiders talk about video games. It always makes me chuckle.

But on topic.. I am sooo picking this up. It looks rocking.

I can't wait for the Riddick next-gen remake, and I can't wait for this - although the little darkling thingies look awfully cheeseball to me, but a great game is a great game.

Ditto. It's almost to the point now where I'm happy I don't have an XBOX because there are too many good games, and I would be frustrated by the fact that I wouldn't have time to play them all to completion. I guess I have the opposite of gaming ADD, since I can't be happy with even 20 hours of gameplay.
