Final Fantasy XI buddy pass
Sunday, June 10th, 2007 - 9:19pm
Anyone got one? I usually don't ask for stuff but I have been feeling the urge to play this again. I have been devouring all the info I can get off the ffxiclopedia. I remember not enjoying to much when it came out. Hopefully a free trail will help remind me why I did not like it so I don't have to buy it again.
Thanks

Reasons I stopped playing FFXI:
--Waiting 4 or more hours to get a group.
--Valkyrm Dunes
--Qufim Island at night
--Finally getting a group only to have your WHM quit on you the first time they get hit. Never mind the fact that they were holy nuking as well as healing.
--Waiting 3 hours in a group to find a RDM or a BRD.
--Snobby Elitists with no idea of what they're doing and can't read logs.
Wonderful game, just lacking in a few areas. Sadly, the biggest problem is the folks who are dead-set on certain party configurations.

I stopped when I couldn't make any sort of progress on my own past lvl 12 or 13. If it was more solo friendly, i'd probably still be playing.

I was wondering about FFXI myself the other day... I never got to try it so I started looking for a trial code with no success.
So the game is party dependent all the way through? That's too bad after coming from WoW and Guild Wars. Not sure If I would be able to handle hours waiting for a group.

I broke down and picked it up for the 360 today. Patching now. I also used my old PC discs and installed it. That way I can choose to play on either system depending on the mood I am in. Playing from the couch on the 360 grants me snuggle time with the girlfriend as she plays her through fable and then hopefully KotOR.
I've talked with some folks who still play here and there, and while apparently it's slightly more solo friendly, you'll still need a group at some point, along with an alliance as well(Think of a 3 group raid). Reason being for that is starting at level 50, you need to complete a 'limit break' quest every 5 levels in order to continue leveling. limit 1 and 2 require a 5 man; limit 3 requires anywhere from 12-18, depending on the level makeup of your group. limit 4 @ 6 5 is the only completely soloable quest in the group, and that's due entirely to the fact that it's just a bunch of running around the world trying to find some people for the questgiver. Limit 5 is technically a solo fight, but you'll need a group to get the item required to start the fight.

AnimeJ's first post detailed exactly why I quit the game after trying it for a short while myself.
As for that last post there, AnimeJ... WTF?! Having to raid just to keep levelling?! That's the most $#@&ed-up game mechanic I've read about yet, and I've dealt with some pretty $#@&ed-up mmo mechanics.
What blows me away about this style of gameplay is that Final Fantasy games up to that point were completely single player experiences. It's as if they decided to make something on the completely opposite end of the spectrum. I honestly expected it to be a lot more solo player friendly, but was sadly disappointed.
The world and concept was neat, though. I wish I had been able to stick with it!

FFXI was originally designed as a seriously hardcore MMO. It filled that bill extrodinarily well, and did very well for itself. Nothing WoW or Lineage extrodinary, but still quite well. I don't know if they ever hit 1 million total subs, but when I quit their historic high base was higher than EQ's ever was.
As for the forced raid to continue leveling, I realize it sounds bad, however, it's really not as bad as you'd think. Unlike WoW raids, you really only needed a single tank, and 2-3 healers in a group of 18. All the rest were either DPS or support classes. The other thing worth noting is that no matter how many jobs you leveled on a character, you only had to do each of the limit quests once. Many people did the 5th limit over again for each job just to say they did or could, however.
All in all, FFXI remains one of my favorite MMOs to date. Despite the forced grouping aspect, and the absolutely insane elitism that became more and more prevalent through the time I played, I had a wonderful experience with it. Ultimately, what it comes down to is that the forced grouping mechanic pushes the social aspect of the game. The fact that you weren't tied down to any single guild was nice as well.
Apart from all that, what really set the game apart in my mind was the job system. It was essentially an excuse to limit you to a single character($12/mo got you a single character, toons beyond that were $1), but it was an awesome mechanic. I had a main and 3 banks, so I wasn't paying any more than I would for any other MMO. Since I could run any job on the main, it wasn't like I needed a legion of alts. On top of that, I could stick with the preferred spelling of my character's name, and not have to worry about that for alts.
It definitely had it's good and bad, but I think if a horde of GWJers were to go back, I might be willing to dig an account up and run with it.

For the time being, I'm gonna stick with WoW and a side of LoTRO. I had multiple accounts through my history though, one on Garuda(Latrevian, Elvaan DRK) and Cait Sith(Latrevian, Elvaan DRG). Both were mid 60s, well off, although one account has since been cancelled and the other is active, but I don't have the card associated with it to cancel

Just found this site not long ago. The vast majority of gaming sites are blocked here at work, glad to see that this one is not. I was going through withdrawals while at work!
I have been playing FFXI since NA launch non-stop except for a nine month break to play WoW. The game has evolved a lot since I started to play. Yes, there still is a level grinding element to it, but it is so much better then what it use to be like. WoW was easier to level up in since the quests also gave experience points. In WoW you could level up solo the entire way to game end, but it was slow. The same is true with FFXI, but it is much slower.
What keeps me coming to FFXI is the store element. The cut scenes that make Final Fantasy a unique gaming experience. I also have to agree that the forcing people to party really does make for a social atmosphere. I never really found the people on WoW to be very socialable and after my real life friends stopped playing WoW, I went as well. Yet, on FFXI, I still had friends on their that I got to know over the viritual world. There are times when I log on and don't do anything but chat it up with friends.
Also, the limit breaks are not that bad. Just get a high level friend to help you out. When I first played all the NA players were around my own level, so limit break one took me over a week to do. Not long ago I helped someone do the quest and it took me an hour. Of course, I was a 75 thief with Treasure Hunter III.
If MMORGs are about getting to end game and getting there quickly this might not be the game for you. If you are looking for a gaming experience with a deep story line and friendly people, this might be the game for you.
Preaching to the choir, mate. At this point, most folks have played it, and went elsewhere. It's a wonderful game. When the community is there, it's really there. The catch is when you don't fit the mold. People hate when you do things that they think you shouldn't be able to.

*KillTrash casts raise on thread.*
So I've been secretly playing FFXI for the past week or so. It was one of the major MMOs that I never tried and I was always curious about. I was never able to find a trial but last week I found out that Gamestop sells this $2 DVD's with the original game, 3 Expansions and lets you play for free for 30 days! So I grabbed that and installed last week. Took over 2 hours to install and patch the whole thing...
Making the story short, I'm loving it actually. After a few days I decided to grab the 360 Vana'diel Collection 2008, that includes the original game and all the expansions (including the just released Wings of the Goddess). I like the game because of all the reasons that pinkkeith mentioned. There is an amazing storyline that you can uncover doing these missions, with cutscenes and all!
The game feels very grindy though. You really need a group past level 10 for most jobs. I'm playing as a Mithra Monk at the moment and my plan was to solo all the way to 15 and then head to the Dunes to start grouping. Well, yesterday I was not lucky at all in finding my first EXP Party. I had my Looking for a Party flag up and stayed in La Theine Plateau soloing. I'm almost level 17 now! I think since I don't have a sub job yet, it will be really hard to find teams. I guess I will just solo to 18, get my subjob and grouping should be easier from there.
The Job system is great! Reminds me of Guild Wars a bit, where you can have a subclass and you can switch it anytime you want without having to respec. Here you can switch your main job and subjob anytime you want. You can switch jobs depending on the challenge you are about to face, as long as you leveled some of them. I love that!
So I was just wondering if anyone still plays this. I'm on Midgardsormr server and name is Killtrash.

I play on Cerberus but have no real attachments to it. I could re-roll on Midgardsormr
Edit - Also what nation do you belong to?
I'm from Sand d'Oria. At the moment I'm a War20/Mnk10, planning on getting War to 37. Last night I started doing Sandy missions and I hope to be doing 2-3 (I want to kill a Dragon!) soon.

Hey, nice meeting you in game, Arovin! I'm still having a lot of fun with the game and plan on investing a lot more time into it. I'm amazed how good the game looks now, considering it's over 5 years old. Just a couple screenshots from my character in action, for those that are curious to know how the game looks nowadays. I created a Flickr Set of screenshots I'm taking from the game, for those interested: Flickr FFXI Set
That's me partying in a pick up group. You can see the huge Titan summoned by the err Summoner in my party. The game is heavily party dependent, but I'm not sure if I've been too lucky so far, but all the parties I got into had very knowledgeable and also respectful people. I love the party dynamics in the game, makes the whole EXP griding less boring imo.

And here's me my char posing in front of the Starlight Festival trees!

i would appreciate a buddy pass if someone had one..
i played FFXI at NA release, and kinda interested to check it out again
thanks!
I'm not sure if there are buddy passes around. I still play the game "casually" at least a couple nights per week. If you want to give the game a Trial, there are none that you can get online.
What you can get is a Trial DVD on any Gamestop. It costs $1.99 and has the Original game installation plus 3 expansions and you can play the game for 30 days free. It sounds like a good deal to me and that's how I got hooked to the game a few months back and decided to purchase and subscribe.
