What's your hobby? (besides gaming!)

I'm kind of tired of spending so much time playing MMOs and I'd like to take up another hobby. I will still be gaming and playing multiplayer games but everytime I stumbleupon a website of someone who creates steam powered robots or cool models I think to myself, "Self, you could be creative like that and you love science!"

So, please list any hobbies you have besides gaming and pictures and/or websites or stories would be great as well!

P.S. Even though I love science, YOUR hobby you want to post about does not have to be science related in any shape or form. This is basically to give all us boring GWJers things to possibly discover this summer.

I personally play basketball, cycle, kick it with friends, read voraciously and try to spend lots of time with my wife. So I have to work to get gaming in. Oh, and I tinker with Linux, etc. as well. Hobbies that involve exercise are always fun. Basketball leagues, 5ks, cycling, kickball, etc. I love to read graphic novels. And when I had the time I had a LOT of fun playing around with Lego Mindstorms. I heartily recommend them if you want to try out something creative, but don't think you have the energy to go completely from scratch.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
Superb exercise and a perfect outlet for both stress and those competitive energies. We have a few MMA fighters coming up through the ranks; but I need a much more solid ground game before I spend time on that side of the house.

Shooting
More Zen than motorcycle maintenance. There's something about being prone at 500 yards with iron sights that just warms my heart. I've shot IDPA a few times as well and I really like it. I'd like to shoot more, I just don't have the time or spare ammo budget right now.

Aside from the standbys (games, movies, books, comics), I train longsword fighting (at least partially inspired by the link in Marsman's sig), do roleplaying (both P&P and LA) as player and gamemaster, write, dance in rock clubs, and spend time in my uni's digital game research group.
A psychatrist I worked with at one point has scheduled an appointment about my burnout for 2012...

As far as discovering new stuff goes, I can't recommend the fencing highly enough. It's a fascinating mix of historical research, exercise, and on-the-fly tactics.
I'd suggest LARP to anyone who enjoys performing, but looking at what I know about the American LARP-scene, I... Won't.

And if I haven't seen further, it's because those bloody giants blocked my sight.

There's something other than games? *scratches head*

Let's see.

Programming, even though I do it for work as well. It's such a creative and relaxing experience, building these ephemeral structures like sand mandalas. Yeah, I know, I'm a dork.

Writing. I don't do it as often, since it takes more effort, but it's great fun to put on paper something that's been rattling around my skull for a while. It's even more fun to get it published afterwards.

Sometimes I build physical things, mostly electronics. Jameco and DigiKey are old friends. Without the room to set up a proper shop, though, I'm limited to futzing around with small, non-mechanical projects. But one day...

I used to write and draw comic strips. After becoming an adult with responsibilities I mostly just write them. I get funny looks when I hand my coworkers post-its with pigs and birds having a conversation doodled on them.

I also love card games, because I love cards. It doesn't matter what kind whether it be a deck of 52 Bicycles or UNO cards or Rook or the property cards from Monopoly. I love tiny cardboard rectangles with pictures and numbers printed on them, so, by proxy I love card games.

Freshwater aquariums are very relaxing for me. Once you really get into it there is a whole ecosystem going on in there that is almost capable of sustaining itself (almost).

I also play paintball as much as possible, but rewarding an experience as it is, it takes organization of a lot of people to make things work out.

Great topic. Seems to be some neat pursuits here.

My main hobby, which is slowly eclipsing my other interests, is playing fretless banjo in the old-time clawhammer style. I sing and teach banjo as well as play. Here's a clip of my playing. And this is my band's website.

I'm also an avid bird hunter. Wild turkey hunting is my favorite outdoor activity, but upland hunting (grouse and woodcock) and general shotgunning are also things I'm really into.

I'm an aspiring writer with a short story almost ready to submit to Asimov's. Wish me luck!

Here's to hobbies!

Sports of all kinds. Beach volleyball with a few brewskies is a great way to spend a Sunday during summer.

I suppose I could also label partying as a fullblown hobby, given how much time I put into it.

I'd call Politics a hobby of mine. Reading about it, talking about it, arguing about it. I'd like to get more involved politically, but I'm wayyyy too jaded. I've contemplated blogging, but just don't have the drive. I should have become a journalist...sigh.

Prior to my big move away from my University town. I was a fencer. I was my clubs sabruer and fenced in competition, reaching the national level twice. Unfortunately at the moment all I've got going is gaming, and reading the odd book from the library since most of my stuff is still in storage a thousand miles away.

That's a really hard question for me to answer. I'm a dad and everytime I'm not with my kid, I'm on the PC playing or reading about gaming. Or if I'm on the sofa, I'm playing with the consoles. I guess gaming is my only hobby! How sad is that?

I play ball hockey. I run a team during the school year and right now I've organized a semi-league with a bunch of local people/kids to play. I also follow the NHL rather religiously and make a point to learn it's history.

Cartoonist by hobby and life-long ambition. In another year I will graduate from Digital Circus with a degree in Computer animation. I also listen to a slew (sp?) of music, dabbled in drumming a bit. I am also a general information sponge, jack of all knowledge, master of none though.

Certified firefighter and all that entails, bartending, and used to be avid tabletop rpg'er. Now I just pretty much relegate my time to gaming online, primarily fps's, when not spending time with my 2 sons and wife.

When I'm not at my day job (coding stuff), I like to:

- Code. It can be addictive.
- Write. Working on a couple of short stories at the moment, and trying to..
- Draw. I really want to do a graphic novel. Once upon a time I had my own comic strip and it was a blast, I want to do that again.
