I know Certis has fond feelings for this game, but I'm wondering if there is anyone else out there who has an opinion. Anyone else played this on the PC or 360, and how is it?

Yay, I get to chime in early. I call it The Platformer Josie Wales. The demo showed it to be an on-the-rails shooter featuring a Bible-fight mode that was useless; worse, it had a timed crate/jumping puzzle with instant death as punishment for failure.

EDIT: Have you played Gun? Much better. Hell, Outlaw from a dozen years ago was better.

Yikes, not the ringing endorsement I was expecting. I had heard nothing but praise about this game during its development.

I picked it up, but Shadowrun and Forza are eating up my time. Hopefully, I'll get to play some this weekend.

I liked it on PC, and I hear the 360 version has been significantly tweaked to fix some of the more aggravating areas. The chief problems with the PC version were the maddening insta-fail stealth missions and maddening insta-death jumping puzzles. It's a testimony to the quality of the rest of the experience that I was willing to slog through those anyway to finish the game.

I tend to agree with Kieron Gillen's take on it here.

I'll be playing it eventually. I know that doesn't sound terribly enthusiastic, but that is only because I'm so much in the grip of other games right now.

I just can't help thinking that the title sounds more like a rallying cry for software pirates. Other than that, I kinda skipped by it as it didn't look like my style.

Gamespot has a review up, stating it is only 8-10 hours long. I'll wait until it hits the bargain bins.

Gamespot says:

Quote:
As ham-fisted and generic as Call of Juarez can be at times, it does enough right to transcend its various issues and turn in a pleasing shooter. It does the Old West motif well, the gunslinging (and bible slinging) are a lot of fun, and the capable multiplayer modes have enough going for them to give the game a bit of staying power. It doesn't quite rise past the ceiling established by other recent western shooters, but it's good, solid fun all around.

I think I can endorse that.

It's 1/2 mildly competant shooter and 1/2 maddeningly sh*tty stealth platformer.

It's a bit pile of yuck all around really.

the DX10 screens are pretty.

But the game still lacks focus. The story seems all over the place, just wasn't fun.

I guess I'll be renting this one then, that's good enough, right Certis?

I think I'll spend my hard earned drug money on a 2nd guitar controller so that my brother and I can get drunk and rock out tonight.

It's not a great first impression kind of game. I don't know, I'd say the second half when Billy gets some real weapons is where a lot of the polish seems to reside. I can see some negative nellies taking a dump on it after an hour though, it's not for everyone.

I decided to pick up Gun instead. It was a cool $20 compared to the $60 I'd drop on a game that I might not enjoy. I'll give it a rent when it hits Hollywood Video, but for now I've got my gunslinging fix.

I've got the opposite opinion, this game absolutely rocks.

Some of the character models are kind of rough, but the environments look incredible and the game runs silky smooth. Some might complain about how linear the game is, but then again I really don't mind that, as long as it keeps going on a breakneck pace (which this does). And I love my westerns.... machine guns be damned, I want more revolvers!

And it definitely doesn't hurt that Reverend Ray is at least six different kinds of whoopass, and the Billy missions, while a little frustrating at first, keep the same, terse pace and are really easy once you get the sneaking figured out.

And I thought Gun was terrible.

I played through this one last year, I enjoyed it for what it was, and had a great time. It's not my usual style of game but was a great way to cleanse the palate and break from all my usual strategy/RPG goodness.

Also I keep reading about guys waiting for it to hit PC, I'm in Australia, but yeah I found it last quarter last year, what's up with that?

Gun was fun, Red Dead Revolver only had (if I remember correctly) exploding heads.

It was released outside of the US last year. I'm not sure why Ubisoft waited to release it stateside, but I suspect it had to do with lining up with the console launch.
