Got my GM confirmation for GenCon! Anyone else going?

I got the confirmation email for my gamemaster registration for this year's GenCon in Indianapolis. I'll be running Iron Crown Enterprise's space combat game Silent Death and my company's game MetalKrushers. I'm really starting to look forward to it. Is anybody else planning on going to GenCon this year? Possibly a small Slap & Tickle? That could be fun.

It's looking like rabbit and I will be there for sure. We might even have some hot, hot Gaald action!

Yeah, it's scary. I'm staring into the abyss right now, and it's staring into me, which I think is kind of a dick move on the abyss's part. - Nyles

You boys and girls enjoy the Hoosier hospitality.

If you're going to splurge on one very good meal, go to St. Elmo's steakhouse. Expensive, but fantastic.

And if you want to go out in the evening, go up to Broad Ripple. There are some good bars downtown, but Broad Ripple's more fun.

And I didn't know anyone ran Silent Death anymore. Or any ICE game, actually. I still have all my MERP books.

For sure a little GC S&T will be in order. We can pick a night and head to a bar and tie certis up and auction him off. Although I'd actually recommend picking a LUNCH gig, as evenings are gametime yo.

Yeah, we run it with an independent gaming group out of Ottawa called the Ottawa Red Shirts. We met them years ago when we first started going to GenCon and have kept in touch ever since. They're a great group of guys.

ICE went out of business a number of years back, but then they got it all back together three or four years ago. I'm not sure if they've made any new Silent Death stuff, but they still sell the old stuff in both printed and PDF. The Red Shirts have been running Silent Death for 15 years or more.

I'm looking forward to catching up with some of you guys there.

Not sure which days, but I think I'll be riding a buddy of mine's media coattails to go to a day or two of the show. (Anyone know Bill Abner? He's the editor at Gameshark.com and co-writes The Blog for the Sports Gamer.)

If you guys are into microbrews at all, there's a good pub called The Ram that's a block or so East of the RCA Dome. Good eats and good brews.

I've yet to register but I'm definitely going to GenCon and one of the DMB shows in town that weekend. As for a S&T, anytime's fine other than during the concert. Not sure which night I'm going yet. As for GenCon, I'm buying a day pass for Friday, I'm pretty sure.

The Chicago summer festivals will make it hard to tear myself away, but I'll keep it in mind. I think there's also an awesome show in Chicago that weekend: Reel Big Fish and Less Than Jake at the Congress. So, we'll see.

Also, Broad Ripple made me laugh, and not just because that name always does. I'll take my Indy hate elsewhere, though. I call for an S&T in Valpo or something, if we want to do it up right and get the Chicagoland goodjers all up ins. Failing that, Gary riverboat casinos, anyone?

I'll be there. This is the first year that I will not be at Gencon to work, so I'm looking to get a lot of gaming in.

I'd love to some day, but like Fed, I'm going to PAX this year and that about does it for my annual summer getaway.

What's good is that as I've been getting more into the hobby, I know more and more people who I could meet up with at future GenCons.

I'm not sure how much of the actual convention I'll get to see. I may just sneak onto the floor toward closing time again and pick up some swag.

But put me down as confirmed for the S&T. I'm only 45min out of Indy, so any day/time works for me.

In what direction? I live up to the North, in Noblesville, which is about 45 minutes from downtown.

I'm south. I can get to 465 in that time, but parking downtown is another issue. I've been lucky the last 2 years and found parking in the Circle Center garages, but I usually show up in the evening toward closing time so that makes it easier. More people going than coming.

wordsmythe wrote:

Yeah, Broad Ripple is fine, but honestly there are enough bars and restaurants downtown by the convention center that it's not really worth it in my opinion. I'm not an Indy native so I can't say for certain but that has been my experience.

I've been to the Ram, it was tasty. I know there's a Ruth's Chris Steak House right nearby, too. I've not been there but my bidness partner Peter has and to him it was a religious experience. I'm not super-interested in food anymore.

However, I'm all for a S&T and hopefully I'll have my GM schedule eventually and be able to try and schedule something somewhere. If anybody's interested in some hot spaceship-on-spaceship action, look us up and play some Silent Death. Or, if robots beating the hell out of each other is more your thing, sign up to play MetalKrushers. Seats have (amazingly) been going fast.

Ruth's Chris is good food, but along the lines of St. Elmo's it is wicked expensive (been there once). If memory serves, it's the type of place where they look down on you a bit if you don't walk in with a reservation.

Parking downtown during GenCon or any convention in Indy can be an adventure, I can vouch for that.

Thing is, fancy Indy is so much cheaper and easier than fancy Chicago that I'd walk around (like I do in the rest of Indy) like I own the place. I hear this is a common issue with visitors from the North.

Indy is awesome. It's safe and the drivers are so piolte. They always move over so I can pass them as I drive.

That's alright. Hoosiers get that alot from Chicagoans. But I'll keep my Chi-town hate to myself, since we're being polite.

It's not GenCon, but I'll be taking my sons to WizardWorld in June. My 6 year old went with me last year, and we did some Halo toy treasure hunting. My younger son, four, is very into Superheroes, so I think he'll have a blast seeing all the action figures, statues, collectibles etc. This is the first time he'll be going.

With this being Star Wars 30th anniversary, I suppose there'll be a ton of memorabilia available too.

They usually have old-school celebrities there for photo's and signings. I havent bought any, but I've seen Lou Ferigno, the actors who played Chewbacca, R2D2, and the Beast Master characters there. (See how good I am with names!) The 501st Stormtrooper troop was there last year too, so my son got his picture taken with the likes of a Boba Fett, Darth Vader and several variations of imperial troopers. The folks in the 501st were very nice and my son was pretty thrilled with the photos.

And no, we wont be wearing any costumes. We're just going to look around and shop a bit, and hopefully just come home with a few treasures and fun memories.

Ruth's Chris is good, but not something one goes out of the way for, imho. I mean, it's a chain...I much prefer to take in the local flavor when I'm somewhere new.

On the other hand, Fleming's is a chain, and it really rocksl. And I'm not just saying that because my wife and I ate there immediately after my proposing to her. The jalepeno potato dish they have is fabulous - I think they're called "Fleming's Potatoes", actually.

Which is neither here nor there, as this thread is about something completely different. ninja

Something like that. Best decision I ever made! (the proposal, not Fleming's, although that was certainly a good one)
