The Restroom Question
Friday, May 25th, 2007 - 11:28am
The restrooms in our building are located in the front office. There are 3 of us in this section that house our desks, break area, and restrooms. Our break area is in front of the restrooms. You have to turn sideways to squeeze down the opening where the microwave is. Glamorous corporate office.
But it's the men's restroom that this is really about. Something about it creates this weird phenomenon. All of the men, even visitors, answer their cell phones in there. They proceed to have loooonggg conversations. In the restroom. Doing their business. We can hear them. Sometimes it's interesting, but what's up with all the chatter in the men's room? Is this acceptable behavior now? None of us women take their cell phones in.

In my 5 years at my current employer, I've never heard anyone on their cell phone in the restroom. It's rather rude to do this and who wants other people to hear their business and their "other business".
Lag used to be a lot worse back in the day. Hell, it took Jesus 3 days to respawn.

Ew. That's so incredibly gross.
Also, I'm just as confused as you are. I thought men had social taboos against conversations within 50 feet of a toilet.

I get it here and at my previous job. I think there's certain places a phone doesn't need to go. I just flush 4 or 5 times while they're talking.
We used to joke about it in junior high. We'd get home, call up our friends and then "take the kids to the pool." So, while you're talking, the conversation was, "So, what arrrrreeee you doing (sigh)?"
Classy.

We do! And it's very rare that I see someone in the restroom on a cell phone - some of us have decided that the best thing to do in such cases is to flush nearby toilets as loudly as possible.

First off, I do believe (given the topic) that it is mandatory to post a link to this video:

Second of all... talking? In there?

If i hear someone on the phone in the same bathroom i'm using, I make loud moaning noises and flush a few times, then more moaning. They usually hang up real quickly.

I'd never answer the phone in the bathroom. But let me ask a question: do you have sales people working there? Sales people always answer their phone. They are genetically unable to not answer it. There's a couple of times here when I've been in the bathroom and some guy in a stall sitting on the throne was in an animated discussion on his cell phone. It's pretty nasty.

I've also been on the "other" end of this. Every few months during of the many telecons that I have to sleep through, someone will make the fatal mistake of not properly muting their phone and we all hear flushing going on. That's usually when the telecon finishes and the ridicule begins.

From my personal experience the only men I have ever witnessed in a bathroom speaking on a cell phone at great length have been of African, Central or South American and Middle Eastern decent. I have heard and sometimes seen multiples of each ethnic background doing this. Maybe it's some sort of cultural thing?

As a third generation plumber with 30 years of experience in restrooms. I can tell you if you think talking on a cell phone in the can is gross. You're a major sissy. I can tell you stories that would make you vommit and wear adult diapers to avoid restrooms.

Sounds like terrorism to me!
EDIT/PS: I can hear coworkers text messaging in there. It's so... tactile.

Memo to the guys in my office regarding restroom behavior:
- Don't try to talk to me when I'm peeing. I will extend to you the same courtesy
- Don't try and engage me in conversation while you're peeing. I don't want to stand there and watch you pee.
- No cell phone conversations while you're on the toilet. It makes my pooping time less enjoyable.
- Don't wash your sweaty ass off using the sink and a paper towel. Either take a proper shower or don't go jogging in the middle of the day when it's 90 degrees outside.
- I don't want to know about the stains on the walls and stalls. Suffice it so say that you should be able to control your own stream.
- Finally, wash your damn hands. Using soap.
Thank you for complying with these simple regulations, you filthy bastards.

I don't understand why people can't just shut up and enjoy their pee.
This does happen occasionally in my office, but mostly with the sales guys.

Just because there are grosser things that go on in public restrooms doesn't make talking on a cell phone while pooping any less gross. It's still pretty goddamn icky.

I'm also amazed at how many men I see that leave the bathroom without washing their hands. Like I want to shake hands with you now, Mr. Grundlejuice.

I haven't come across this, but I wouldn't find it any more irritating than people talking on their cell phones in lines, on the street as they walk right behind you, in the seat next to you on the train, etc. And any conversation on the phone is going to be an improvement on listening to the guy next to me groan while he suffers through a bout of diarrhea or the screamers.
As if you didn't already do so by using the same doorknob to exit the room after they did.

I remember having more than one customer urinate while on the phone with me when I worked for a call center.
One guy, just as I was about to troubleshoot said "Can I pee first?". I was so thrown by the statement I just said "Sure". What commenced was one of the longest urinations imaginable, punctuated by a number of satisfying moans. Most of them would just try and sneak it in without me knowing.
I also was in a Staples bathroom once and this guy came in to unleash the fury within his bowels and managed to answer his cell phone during the event. It was his wife and part of the conversation went like "Hi Honey.. no, nothing. NO! I'm here in the middle of the store!".

Well, it's not uncommon in the ladies room. I can tell you that for sure. Now, women can talk to each other whether their friends are present or not. I think it's very stupid and from now on when I hear someone on a cellphone in the ladies room I'm going to be obnoxious.

Bah, somewhere on "Overheard in ", I read a transcript of a guy who interrupted a phone marriage proposal to pinch off a loaf. I haven't been able to find it again though.
Ahh, found it.

Nope, this is the corporate office of a driving school. All we do here is push paperwork and receive money for the most part.
I think maybe the guys here just think when that big door closes, they are in some sort of soundproof room with no consequences.. Like those people who pick their noses while driving.
