Odin Sphere Impressions [PS2]

I've managed to put in a few hours so far, which is fewer than I'd like since I'm having more fun than I'd expected with it. Rather than a straight-up J-RPG, this is more a side scrolling action game with some RPG elements. The combat is pretty fun and the way you deal with managing attacks vs. tending your planted food (for health) and other beneficial shrubbery is a funny dynamic that makes for some interesting back and forth.

What really strikes me about the game, and this isn't something picked up elsewhere, is how tiny the "levels" are so far. They are literally spheres, you can run the entire loop in either direction in about 30 or 40 seconds. Once, when fighting a large dragon, I had to so I could get behind the bastard.

Each level takes minutes to beat (more for the boss dragon) and you go from one to another through interlinked portals. At first, it's linear, but it doesn't take long before you're choosing which sphere to hit next, and heading back to the shop sphere to buy seeds or food. It's a little like a Zelda dungeon, the way areas are segmented and almost complete unto themselves. It's fun, quick and varied so far.

The graphics look really good and while there's a fair bit of slow down while the PS2 (or PS3, in my case since backwards compatibility works great) chokes on the giant sprites at times, it's a worthy trade-off for the amount of detail and style on all the characters and enemies. Voice acting is pretty good, and the story seems fine so far.

All in all, a real diamond in the rough that may charm the pants off you. Keep an extra pair handy.

Certis beat me to it. - Elysium

One other interesting little note, now that I've played more. There's a pretty fun alchemy system in effect for the game that will create new potions and spells to use. If you plan to play the game, make sure you don't skip any tutorials!

Hmm, this wasn't on my radar at all. Hopefully I'll get a chance, in the near future, to give it a shot.

I'm at Gwendolyn's third chapter.

I'm surprised by how challenging the game turned out to be. At the very beginning I chose the medium difficulty and expected to swiftly plow through the game. That never happened. In fact, I found myself getting into tough spots very early on. And it was during those moments that it became apparent if you don't use the seed and alchemy system, you're not going to get anywhere. It was a real struggle for survival, planting the seed right next to the boss with only 20 HP left, hoping to kill the occasional adds quickly enough to have the seed absorb enough souls to come to fruition, eating the fruit, and still having a hell of a time trying not to get killed.

In short, I totally underestimated Odin Sphere's difficulty and paid for it. All the better though; it's more fun this way.

Looks like Odin Sphere snagged 3rd in the Famitsu Software Charts.

Quote:
It's always good to know what other countries' tastes in video games are, and Japan's no exception. Thankfully, Famitsu's just published the software sales charts for May 14 to May 20, to give us a look at what's currently getting fellow gamers in the land of the rising sun all a-titter.

Leading the pack is Shining Wind, the sequel to the critically-panned Shining Tears title for the PlayStation 2. You may remember all the hubbub about the latter being mediocre at the most, but with its sequel taking the top spot in Famitsu's sales chart, it's not hard to imagine that the issues that made Shining Tears so-so were done away with. Let's all hope so.

Following closely behind is Moero! Nekketsu Rizumu Damashii: Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan 2 for the Nintendo DS. The much-awaited sequel to the hot-blooded, beat-tapping Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan and Elite Beat Agents, Ouendan 2 takes what made the original such a hit worldwide, combines it with EBA's improvements, and gives DS owners another chance to save the world all over again through rhythm and music.

Racking up the third spot is Odin Sphere, Atlus' 2D brawler, again for the Playstation 2. A rather quirky title that goes back to the old days of 2D brawling, complete with hand-drawn visuals and sprites, Odin Sphere could be something to look out for.

Other video games that made the list are Final Fantasy Tactics: The Lion War, Wii Sports, New Super Mario Brothers, and Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings.

Hey Certis, do you have your PS3 hooked up to a HDTV and if so does it upscale the signal for you? For a game that's already gorgeous at standard defs I wonder if upscaling the signal, either in the TV or with the new PS3 update makes it even more gorgeous?

I can tell you one thing for sure, and I need to mention this in Stric's thread too. I was able to stretch the image on the game BEFORE the latest system update, and now it locks me to the 1:1 image (non-widescreen) like the 360 does with all their games. That indicates to me it is upscaling and locking it to an HD res. Cool, but now I can't fill the screen!

So it's locking it at 704 x 480? I wasn't aware that you could upscale the signal to HD and still keep the SD screen size. Besides, why would you want to stretch it wider? Won't the characters look like Jenny Craig rejects then?

It's locking at 4:3 yeah. Upscaling to HD doesn't magically make a non-widescreen game fit the format, it just sharpens the 4:3 image. Stric mentioned you could change it in the PS3 settings to fill the screen, but I suspect it would just full screen the game, which would make it look wide and a little off. What I did before the update was use "Theater Wide 1" on my TV, which zooms the screen in a little and stretches it. You lose a little at the top and bottom, but it fills most of the screen without stretching it out too bad.

I did the same thing. I wonder, though, what the difficulty level actually affects. What I'm afraid of is that it will be like Valkyrie Profile, where you can't get at parts of the story and can't get the best ending if you play on easy. I suppose that since you can change it on the fly, it probably only alters how much damage you deal and recieve. I'll probably stick with medium for a bit longer, but assuming the latter is the case rather than the former, I might dial it down if it continues to be as punishing as it was early on.

Another question, though. Do the English voices pick up a bit? I used them at the beginning, and while they weren't bad in any way they also didn't strike me as anything special either, so I switched to the Japanese voices. Should I give the English ones a second chance?

I've been jumping between the two, but right now I'm settled at English so I don't always have to be glued to the screen to read the text. I'm in the same boat.

Yeah the fullscreen option in the scaler scales the image to fill the screen. As I stated though i've only tried FFXII which has a widescreen option so it's not so bad. But that said I know my tv has a wide mode option in the settings so you can mess with the stretch/zoom options even with hd content. I've got this shipping from gamefly should be here today or tomorrow, i'll mess with the scaler options then.

Oh also Certis I thought I would mention you can turn the scaler off in the game settings menu and it should go back to the way it was.

I just ordered from Amazon. It doesn't say "In Stock" but it says ships within 2-4 days, so I hope that means there are more on the way. I'm not in a rush because of my backlog, but I don't see much reason to wait on the purchase either given a few factors:

1) It's published by Atlus, which probably means a small initial run and maybe another run down the line, but quantities will be limited.
2) It's gorgeous and looks like a game I'd hold onto rather than resell, although given the likelyhood of its rarity it may actually increase in value.
3) It looks like a lot of fun as well - I like brawlers and I generally like RPG-lite games, and I trust Atlus to put out a good product.
4) Birthday gift certificates from Amazon, and this game may never go down in price + see above (may actually increase in value).

I'll let you all know more when it does arrive.

I returned this game to Gamefly. I really wanted to like it but I found the story to be pretty boring and the combat system to be a bit simplistic. And while the alchemy and planting systems added a fresh tweak the the gameplay mechanics the inventory micromanagement required ruined that bit for me as well.

As for the scaling it really didn't seem to matter much on this game. It looked about the same regardless of whether I used the PS3 to scale or my tv set.

If the PS3 were to do upscaling by tapping directly into the PS2 hardware and rendering onto a higher resolution, it would likely be very good. But that would almost certainly have needed to be a shipping feature. The fact that they added it afterward most likely means it won't improve the image much. It's highly likely that they're analyzing the output as a bitmap, frame by frame, without access to subpixel detail. That'll let them smooth out the jaggies a bit, but they can't REALLY improve the resolution. They just kind of blur it a little so it looks a little better. It's not upscaling in the sense of giving you more resolution. It's just, possibly, doing a better job of stretching X:Y resolution to 2X:2Y than the TV does.

It's sort of like taking hamburger and trying to reconstitute the cow. If they were earlier in the pipeline, the hamburger wouldn't be as finely ground, and the resultant cow-shaped paste would look more bovine... but even then it wouldn't moo.

I was thinking of buying this just because Atlus is famous for releasing games in very small runs and quickly turning them into collector's items (I'm still trying to figure out how they make money this way.) Everything I've heard about it has been positive (with the exception of some complaining about the difficulty.) I put it in my GetGames queue but if I can find it cheap, I may just pick it up. I am curious to hear if it doesn't get really hard farther in like some reviews have said.

So I finally finished the first character, and I must say I am quite impressed with the story so far. It's been quite a while since I really felt myself caring about what was going on in an RPG (FF12 and Rogue Galaxy, while excellent in terms of gameplay, both fell a bit flat in this regard), and it feels good. I must say, though, that the story is FAR more serious than I expected from the game's bright and cheerful visual style. Because of this, I'm glad that I decided to stick with the Japanese voices.

Seeing as there is not really any humor to be lost in the translation, listening in a language that I barely understand helps me to not notice the occasional awkwardly written line. More than that, though, despite the vaguely Norse/Gernanic/Norman-Anglo-Saxon setting, the attitudes and behaviors of the characters (at least so far) are VERY Japanese, and the way they way they speak, think, and act makes much more sense to me in the context of what I know about Japanese culture. This, and the fact that the game in many ways reminds me of old Kurosawa films (Rashomon, anyone?) has greatly contributed to my sense of connection to and enjoyment of the story.

One minor gripe, though: Man, is that slowdown ever annoying. If you haven't yet reached the first character's final level, let me warn you in advance that what you have experienced so far is nothing compared to the last level. Ugh! I really wish they could have found a way to make the game as pretty as it is without sacrificing so much of its playability.

I had ordered from Amazon but they still hadn't confirmed that they had it in stock, let alone shipped, so when I saw a copy in Gamestop I picked it up and cancelled the Amazon order.

I'm impressed so far. It looks as good as I'd expected it to and with the hype it's gotten that's pretty damn good. I enjoy the 2D brawler combat and the speed of progression so far.

I'm impressed with the story but not the voice acting - I may switch over to Japanese as well so the voice doesn't pull me out of the immersion.

The controls are pretty good but it's definitely not just a button masher. It's a good challenge to manage Attacking, Power(Stamina), Health, Growing your plants, Blocking enemy attacks, and Absorbing psyphers. In fact I keep getting nailed while trying to absorb psyphers so I know I need to work on that.

I have two questions for those who have gotten further than I:
1) When do you start combining ingredients to make your own potions
2) The "Map" of the spheres often has an icon next to 5 stars. It looks like a potion or fruit from what I've seen - is that a reward for getting an "S" rank on that particular sphere? Is it a reward for doing something else? I haven't figured it out yet.

1. I think they teach you about alchemy in chapter 2 or 3.
2. It's a difficulty rating.

2. To clarify zero's point, the number of stars tells you the difficulty, and the icon is the reward for clearing the stage. Beating it with a higher rating gives you addition bonus items, but you always get the one shown on the map as long as you clear that stage.
