Update on Vista (64 bit POV)

Driver support for Vista continues to improve and at this point my major driver complaints seem to have been resolved.

Nvidia graphic drivers have been stable and perform well enough for last few drivers. I do not have a game that I can not run and I do not crash in applications all the time.

My Linksys wireless USB-N network card finally has a driver also. In fact I pluged it in this morning for kicks while I still had a wired connection and my PC found the latest drivers and installed them with no issues.

My creative card has worked well from the start.

The other day I purchased an all in one canon printer installed the software plugged it into the USB port and it has worked great.

More and more programs are finally coming out that do not try to run in a privalaged mode so the allow/disallow prompts are slowly fading away.

Certainly the drivers/programs will need to mature and have room for improvement but it seems like 64bit Vista is finally at a point where it is not a teeth pulling exercise to use the machine.

I ordered a new Asus 680i mobo because I've basically decided that most (if not all) my issues under XP and Vista 64 have to be my craptacular EVGA 680i mobo.

So for the rebuild I will give Vista x64 another shot.. hopefully it will stick around.

Aint nothing new about the world order..it's been playing since the day they put George Washington on a quarter

I too am using the 680i EVGA mobo.

Maybe you got just a bad mobo?

Be interesting to hear if you have better results with a new mobo.

Gameguru,

How did the MB work with 64-bit?

For instance, there are 108 beads in a Catholic rosary and there are 108 stitches in a baseball. When I learned that, I gave Jesus a chance. ~Ron Shelton, Bull Durham, 1988

My Vista 64bit experience didnt really get solid until recently.. switching to an Intel X48 and ATI Crossfire NON creative sound card setup was the trick for me. I've been completely happy with Vista ever since then. I love that my system just never crashes.

I've been using 64 bit vista for 5 months on a aBit IP35 pro. I have had no driver problems or programs problems at all. I don't see why people are so worried about Vista 64.

Thanks for standin' still Wanker!

Yup, after dual-booting between Vista 64 and XP for a while, I made a complete switch around March. You couldn't pay me to go back to XP now. Far more stable then XP ever was. If anyone's planning on moving to Vista, it's the perfect time to make the jump to 64-bit at the same time, unless you're still relying on a lot of really old apps or something.

I would think the first rule of PR is to ignore forum people, because they vacillate between crazy and liar. - Elysium

If you're going to go Vista, go 64-bit. 32-bit gives you all the problems with few of the benefits. If you're going to stay 32-bit, run XP instead.
