Fallout 3: Complaining and/or Slurping Catch-All Thread

The teaser site has been updated with a countdown to...a teaser to be released in 34 days. You also get a taste of music from the game, and judging by the style, it sounds like our opponent is Thulsa Doom.

So, about the picture: concept art, target render, or screenshot?
In any case, it gets my motor running.

As a still concept art image + audio ambiance limited thing...I dig it. But it could be for any number of different types of games with any number of names, so I'm left with a neutral reaction.

That's the problem I have with it. Nothing there feels Fallout; it's all generic. First person, I'd be willing to take, but don't lose the style of old Fallout, without which it has no charm.

There's a blurb from one of the Devs saying that the image on the teaser site is concept art.
Also, for those interested, No Mutants Allowed today posted a tech demo of what Fallout3 (aka "Van Buren") was supposed to be had Interplay managed to stay afloat.
I'd dig up links to both but I'm at work at the moment. Also, I don't care if its in 1st, 3rd or some Kutaragi-infused nth person persepective, as long as I get to roam a huge non-linear wasteland filled with radioactive scorpions while wielding a sawed-off shotgun and a loyal dogg at my side then I'll be a happy post-apoc camper.

I want an real RPG, not another Oblivion, which I love, but Elder Scrolls and Fallout are totally different beasts.
Count me in was worried/waiting to complain..
That leaked Fallout 3/Van Burean video almost made me cry. THATS the game I want!

When I saw that Fallout3/Van Burean tech video, my heart actually ached. Then I spent a half hour rummaging through old boxes looking for my copies of Fallout and Fallout 2.

If they could take a game screenshot from this perspective, and the game surpassed Oblivion in looks, they likely would've. This image is a color-adjusted pre-rendered something, which may not have been made for Fallout at all.
Agent: "Why do you think she's known as the Black Widow ?"
Chuck: "Because... she's African American and her husband died ?"
I am early looking forward to the trailer, which will spark my anticipation of the excitement leading up to the enjoyment of the upcoming product!
"PEACE ON EARTH. GOOD WILL TO MEN. PUBLIC SHELTER. ADMISSION 50¢"
I'm not expecting much from this teaser. Not trying to be negative, but I'm cynical about "teasers" now. I bet it's a couple of pre-rendered scenes of blown out buildings, some music, maybe a pre-rendered guy in a mask, and a logo.

Awesome
Picture's nifty I guess, but count me out until there's more details on gameplay.

I don't really care what perspective it is so long as I can target body parts and get to see those bloody gaping wounds! Oh and I have a fetish... I enjoy killing the 2 headed brahmas. Well to be honest I pretty much kill anything that looks at me the wrong way, but I take special pleasure when it comes to the brahmas.
If I were to really want to excite Fallout fans, my teaser page would be the following Flash app:
Just outside of Junktown. Dirty walls, rusty car remains. The wind is blowing around particles of dust, leaves, and an occasional piece of rusted, clunking metal. The city entrance can almost be seen at the right edge of the screen. Near it, there's a guard, sitting on a barrel. There's a self-made cigar lying near him, smoking.
Sometimes he lifts a dirty can to his mouth and chugs something from it. It's an animation that plays at random intervals, but not often at all. Mostly he just breathes and stares at the vast desert that is undoubtedly outside of the screen.
Another random animation is another guard, pacing really close to the camera from left to right and right to left. You can hear the sound his boots make, and the clanking noises of his weapons and armor. This animation also doesn't play too often.
This thing wouldn't take too long to make, as it is a combination of static bitmaps and a series of animated 2D sprites, but it would excite the hell out of the fans. It would give a limited appearance of a live world, of proper Fallout vision.
Of course, I think Morrolan is right and they'll just have generic blown-up buildings, a mask guy and a logo instead.
Agent: "Why do you think she's known as the Black Widow ?"
Chuck: "Because... she's African American and her husband died ?"
34 days would make it the 53rd anniversary of D-Day.
War... war never changes.
Some would argue that it hasn't since that day, that every gun ever since fired has been merely an echo of the ones heard on Gold, Omaha, Juno, Utah and Sword. Here truly was the dawn of the Cold War, the birth day of the Wasteland.
Either that or a decent marketing ploy.

Holy crap, a tech demo of the cancelled FO3/Van Buren is available. (And no. I'm not referring to the video they released two days ago.)
Zomg.

My thoughts exactly.
I just hope that by the time Fallout 3 is released I'll have a computer that can run it.

When it's released, I will buy enough computer to make it run perfectly.
Oh, do I dream so hard for FO3..

Anybody else notice the leaked demo wanted to talk to the internet through your firewall?
Also, anybody notice the female character model?
I tried it. I died in the first little fight thing and was dead, but my dead body could still slide around and look at things. That was kinda neat, I guess.

I'm with you unless it means DX10 only and upgrading to Vista. I doubt it will be that way, but just sayin'.

Oblivion has sold somewhere in the neighborhood of three million units so far. Fallout, Fallout 2 and Fallout: Tactics sold around eight hundred thousand units combined if memory serves me correctly. Bethesda is probably going to want to make money instead of trying to please a small crowd of hardcore "fans" that are, quite frankly, totally insane when it comes to what they want.
Personally, I'm really excited by the idea of an Oblivion game in the Fallout setting. A Fallout game that gives us lots of optional back story in the form of in-game books? Being able to explore an open ended, detailed RPG world that isn't Lord of the Rings-esque for once? I'm there.
Oblivion in post-apocalyptic clothing would not be a Fallout game though.
Don't get me wrong, I do understand that changes will have to be made to the game if they want to be commercially viable, and I've enjoyed what I've played of Oblivion quite a lot, but if it wants to be a Fallout game it needs to replace all that space with more intricately crafted location and much more in-depth character interaction. If they're going to dress up an fps, I'd much rather see Deus Ex in a Mad Max costume than Oblivion. (I did have an idea about crossing Deus Ex with GTA 2 and setting it in New Reno, actually. Would have been a pretty cool mod, but far too much work.)
Also, backstory in books wouldn't work at all. Things blew up, the remains hid in vaults and then went all Mad Max. Everyone can understand this. There's no fictional kingly biographies that need writing, nor demon fauna that needs describing. And people should be far too far too busy fighting over scraps and generally having a very short lifespan to bring back the printing press. I'm just sayin'.
Not that I have any expectations at this point, I'm pretty much content to giggle at the NMA crowd when it fails to live up to their expectations, and play it if it's a good enough game.
"The trouble with fighting for human freedom is that one spends most of one's time defending scoundrels. For it is against scoundrels that oppressive laws are first aimed, and oppression must be stopped at the beginning if it is to be stopped at all."
If I'm not mistaken, it's a matte painting by Craig Mullins, which makes me hopeful, because Mullins has about ten times as much style as Bethesda's in-house department. If there is one man who could update Fallout's style with dignity, it's him.
No. I recognize that there is a place for environment-driven exploration games, but Fallout is not that kind of license. Fallout's concept is based around a high number of individualized characters in tightly designed locales. Bethesda acknowledged as much in interviews when it purchased the license.
The sales data you cite is misleading because the volume of the games market as whole grew exponentially between both games.
And if I haven't seen further, it's because those bloody giants blocked my sight.
Just curious but do you guys think Bethesda will keep "3" in the title? It's one thing to be releasing a sequel to a popular mainstream series and continuing on the numbering but given the age and niche appeal of the original franchise, I almost expect Bethesda to announce the game's title as just "Fallout".
