Any online CCGs of note?

I've an urge - more a primal need, actually - to sate my long-dorment collectible card game (CCG) lust.

The last game I played semi-seriously (and quite successfully) was the Aliens vs. Predator CCG at the end of the 90's, but I'd played a lot of Magic: The Gathering with friends before then and enjoyed that too.

I'd really like to find a good online CCG to play now, and was wondering if anyone knew one that's worth trying out.

Only stipulation is it must be free--at least to try. And browser-based too, ideally.

I use to play sanctum, it is a tactical ccg. You can play for free, and it even gives you a bunch of cards.

If you find you like it I happen to have a bunch of cards just taking up space....

Well, Magic the Gathering has it's own fully implemented online game, which you can play some simple decks freely.

Never played it but I think the Lord of the Rings game is still going.

They converted the VS superhero game into a simplified online version, also available on PSP and DS.

Hopefully that is something to be going on with. I only play Magic Online and find I often don't get to spend as much time on it as I would like!

edit - just noticed you specified browser based, and all my suggestions were downloadable clients, sorry!

Thanks, Briz. I've registered an account and will give it a shot. Liking the board setup from the screenshots.

Yeah, I tried playing the original (bug-riddled) Interplay version a few times but couldn't get on with it. V3, however, looks positively erotic.

And having to download a client isn't a negative, it's just that browser-based would be more convenient for me. I'll check out all your suggestions.

Yeah, you're not gonna get much that's browser-based.

There's one site...dammit. Name slipped my mind. I'll think of it. They've converted a crapload of commercial CCGs. (Yes, legally. )

[hrm...ccg workshop dot com? They had something called the Gatling engine, I think... Logan worked for them...]

The current version (2.5) works fine, and is a fantastic way to learn the nuances of the game (timing, how the stack works, etc). You need to put $10 down to open an account, but can use that $10 towards product for a tournament or league... DO NOT just crack packs like I did. Like Torq said, there are basic decks available online that you can play for free... but Magic Online will end up costing you more than playing in real life a) because it's available 24/7 (minus all the server crashes) and b) there are no discounts online.

As there are caveats to every statement I've made, you theoretically can play free (or even turn a profit) if you are EXTREMELY good because of prize payouts... but I would rate the number at less than 1% of MTGO players who fall into this category.

Good luck in your quest-

What an unbearably bad attempt at a pun.

I believe there was a Marvel one as well - they released the client on Fileplanet - I downloaded it for my son, but we never got around to actually playing it. Something trumped it and I forget what it was now.

If I ever get beyond PEDESTRIAN AVERAGE then maybe I'd consider bank-rolling a full time MTGO habit.

Also I have three kids and work long days, so I doubt very much I'd get the most out of any significant investment in something like a CCG. Hence my "it must be free--at least to try" requirement. Otherwise I might as well throw my money down the toilet... or ask in the comic shop near my office if they play regular MTG in there. (I've still got my original black-red deck knocking around in the loft somewhere.)

Certainly looks like it. They appear to support Aliens vs. Predator too, so I've signed up for an account.

Huzzah! \o/

I learned to play the Shadowrun CCG there, and I believe they do Shadowfist. Alas, not enough real-life buddies here for a good round of 'Fisting...

Wrestlevania - There is a pretty good paper Magic scene in Bristol (and Bath) I believe, including a regular casual scene. Now I have never been there to play but I have a good friend who lives there and he plays every Saturday.

Chack it out, but beware the addiction...

Excellent--thanks for that, Torq!
