Very good deal, I'm almost tempted to pick it up but I'll just wait for a local price drop. It seems like a decent quirky game but I'm hopelessly broke.

It's a great game... the kind of game that people are always saying the PSP doesn't have (i.e. quirky, original, fun).

This is a great price, but I'm sure it will come to the GREATEST HITS line eventually.

I'll have to check this out.

I'm having an absolute blast with my new PSP. The machine is pretty damn impressive. Here are the games that I've picked up:

Lumines
Lumines II
MLB 06: The Show
MLB 07: The Show
Hot Shots Golf
Wipeout Pure
Marvel: Ultimate Alliance
Puzzle Quest
GTA: Liberty City Stories
Tiger Woods 07
Tony Hawk Project 8
Pirates!
The Warriors
XMen: Legends II
Mercury Meltdown

I think I may have gone overboard, but I haven't regretted one of these purchases.

Welcome to the fold... just one question-- why did you buy both 06 and 07 of MLB?

BTW, you've found the secret to enjoying the PSP-- actually buying games for it and playing it!

Well, I grabbed 06 because Bill Harris (an authority on the subject) called it "The best baseball game I've ever played." I figured it'd be a shame to pass it up.

I grabbed 07 for the updated rosters, etc.

06 was only 19 bucks used, so it wasn't that hard of a decision.

I've got a PSP and Metal Gear Acid 2 and Pirates.

First of all, Pirates. Most of us know this game, but we haven't played it like this. Pirates is the perfect portable game. I can waste 5 minutes or 3 hours with this thing. The graphics are almost perfect for the PSP, just colorful enough that they look PS2 quality and not the PS1 quality I see with 3D-heavy PSP games. My only complaints are that dancing has become a boring stare-in-one-spot-and-mimic-like-a-monkey affair, and the load times slow down the fun. However, it has so much charm, so much replayablity, and so much of that Sid Meiers addictive quality that I'm playing it in the car during lunch. I'm not bringing my PSP to work tomorrow.

Second, MG Acid 2. This is the most fun I've had with Metal Gear since the first playstation game that put the series on the map. The strategic combat seems perfect for Metal Gear Solid, although the card game's rules are somewhat confusing. Still, it plays exactly like a great Metal Gear game. Nothing is lost in the transition to turn-based, in fact I might prefer this style. The graphics are cell-shaded and work well for the psp. The story is even improved, there is very little of that annoying japanese teenage emo where Snake has a 3 hour conversation about his grandmother while hiding in a locker. There is none of that. Other the other quirkiness is present. I hoping some real depth will open up in this game, because it might turn out to last months. Plus, it was only $12 at Fry's.

Lastly, the PSP itself. It's sleek, sexy, frustratingly obtuse and covered in ports and sh*t I don't need and have no intention of learning how to use. The battery life lasts longer than I expected it would. You can power down the unit in the middle of the game, and when you turn it back on the game comes right back on as if you paused it. I look like a nerd if I'm caught playing this in public, just not as much of a nerd if I'm caught playing a DS. The screen smudges easily but you don't even notice when the unit is on.

I currently have no desire to play action games on it. Like DSGamer, my thumbs hurt inside of 5 minutes if I play this thing in any twitch capacity. The 3D games that attempt to emulate 2-stick console games have been universally panned; I tried Star Wars Galaxies and SOCOM FTB 1 and both sucked. However, I'd like to try out Syphon Filter and I strangely want to play Metal Gear Portable Ops, despite Sinatar's strong warning against it. I'm also interested in the SRPG Jeane d'Arc and FF Tactics, of course. Puzzle quest looks great, too.

You can get GWJ mobile on it, looks great.

Second, MG Acid 2.

As obvious as it sounds, if you like #2, go back and pick up #1 as well... the graphics in 1 are more standard stuff, and the gameplay is fundamentally the same. I know I hate to do this often, but you might want to try and use a FAQ for this game to get the most out of your cards... I know the combat is a bit hard to understand at first, but I finally got the hang of it (I think )

If you're ever going to do any travelling, I suggest you get to know your friend the mini-USB port quite well-- the PSP is an awesome video player. As I've said before, I usually use my ipod video for my travel viewing, but now that I have a 4GB memstick, I've been using the PSP more and more. The screen is HUGE in comparisson. Sony finally allowed videos with full resolution with firmware 3.30, but it's still a bit wonky to self-encode. Standard 320x180 works just fine, though.

And yeah... the SLEEP MODE is one of the best things about the system... just a quick flick of the switch, and you're good.

I own SOCOM #1, and I thought it was pretty decent... I didn't play much of it, though. I just put about 20 minutes into playing DAXTER, and for a 3D platformer, it seems to be doing everything right so far (most other games like this, esp. DEATH JR., have been somewhat iffy).

As for other slower-paced tactical games, try FIELD COMMANDER (a less anime Advance Wars).

LOCO ROCO is fun, and there's no thumb movement at all LUMINES is a must buy, I think, and I still say HOT SHOTS GOLF is one of the most fun games I've ever played. Give it a shot. And dang it... EXIT is a fun, unique game as well... very overlooked, and in the bargain bin now.

I've been an owner for about a month and a half now. Haven't bought much for it besides Daxter and Lumines since homebrew has taken up a lot of my space and attention.

Still... it's an underrated system. A lot of quality games that get no attention because it's LOL SONY PORTABL-*battery dies*

I will be joining you shortly friends. Tax return + birthday coming up soon, and a PSP price drop in the rearview window means I should have one soon.
I appreciate the comments/mini reviews in this and other threads. The games I'm most looking forward to won't come out until Fall, but I'll probably pick up 2 or 3 games off the bat.
Pirates is pretty locked in, so the other games I'm looking at are Gitaroo Man Lives, Hot Shots Golf, Syphon Filter, Wipeout, Lumines, and some Metal Gear game, either Acid or Portable Ops. Opinions on any and all are welcome.

I think that's definitely part of it. The DS is overrated as much as the PSP is underrated, IMHO. But yeah, when I owned one the only games I could/wanted to play really where Lumines and Every Extend Extra and those I couldn't play too long because it caused thumb pain. That's why I won't become a new owner again until they fix the D-Pad or redesign it to be more ergonomic.

Still, though, for those that aren't caused pain by the system or enjoy games like Pirates, the system has much to offer. And no doubt I'll be thinking of it again whenever Disgaea and FFT get released.

Here's a question for the new and veteran owners: which accessories do you think are good/must buys?
Obviously the Pro Duo Memory Card is a must, it sounds like the 2 gig card is fine while the 4 gig card is great if you want to spring for it.

Scaph: Get the hard Logitech PSP case. It snaps right onto the system and stays there perfectly while you play games. Once you are done just flip the lid down and voila. Instant protection. I swear Logitech has yet to make a flawed accessory.

The 2 gig card is fine unless you want to go homebrew. I'd up to 4 gigs if pirating was your method.

Other than that? Eh, you should be good. The PSP can take care of itself. Maybe an extra battery pack if you use it for long amounts of time without charging.

What are you TALKING about? I've been in every PSP thread too!

Scaphism and all: I would strongly recommend getting the 4gig stick. I had a 2gig, and it wasn't quite enough. In fact, I'm almost out of room on the 4 now. The 4gig Sandisk stick was $69 from Amazon when I bought mine a couple weeks ago.

All of that room gives you the ability to do all the homebrew you want, and you MUST do homebrew - and for FSM's sake, NEVER upgrade your firmware with Sony's official stuff - use Dark Alex's Open Edition firmware (see pspupdates.com for news on that front).

I've used my PSP a ton for playing videos, which is one nice thing about the big memory stick.

Important note on loading times - if they're bothering you, go to a homebrew firmware and rip the game to your memory stick, and play it from there. Loading times will be a thing of the past! I'm starting to go to a model of just playing all my games off the memory stick for convenience.

Happy to help anyone who needs any guidance. ninja

I'm enjoying Tiger Woods 07, though putting is extremely frustrating. I've put maybe 3 hours into the game and I still feel like putting is an inconsistent mess. I hated Lumines at first, but I'm starting to come around....I'm just not very good at it yet. Hot Shots Golf is fantastic and much more fun than TW07. The Warriors has a really great vibe, too.

I picked up the Logitech Playgear Pocket, an extra higher capacity battery, and a 4GB Sandisk Memory Stick. I'm not planning on doing much homebrew stuff, so I've upgraded to the latest firmware (may have been a mistake..shrug).

For fingerprints/scratches, I put on a Pelican screen protector. I'm usually horrible with putting these things on, but I managed to do a pretty decent job with this one. Now I'm not worried about scratching the screen every time I wipe a piece of dust away.

Overall, I'm really impressed with the machine. I've played more of it in the last week than any other game/console.

The only two annoyances so far are the browser's capability (or lack thereof). Getting "out of memory" errors when loading large web pages is crazy. I've got a 4GB stick in the machine...how can a browser cache not use that?. Also, I wish their flash plugin were updated to allow video.

I'm going to second Feydakin's comments here:
The homebrew on the PSP is what made it a standout system in my mind. That, and it's capabilities as a media player. 3 hour bus ride? No worries, pop some music/a movie/a snes emulator on your psp and you're set.

New owners, please look into these, because they are what will ensure that you do not regret your purchase.

Hey there, long time lurker here. I've recently been cleared by my fiance to buy a PSP and was looking for a little advice. I'm really interested in doing homebrew stuff and I'm taking advice of the previous posters and going to get a 4gb card and the logitech case. Can any ol' PSP run homebrew? With new firmware of course. Any sites you are aware of would be helpful to keep me from having to sort through the mounds of google trash. Thanks for the help!

Sivok, your PSP needs to be semi-older to play homebrew. I think the firmware crack is pretty up to date so you should be able to do it as long as you don't have the bleeding edge... but the older firmware you can find the better.

Sivok;

and
http://forums.qj.net/f-qjnet-sony-psp-forums-48.html/

is what i use to check for new firmware. It's not the most user-friendly of sites, but between the news feeds and the forums it has what you need.

Check out the guides on the forums, they were pretty useful when I was just exploring firmware options on my PSP, then when you feel informed, head to this guide:
http://tinyurl.com/3xq35f
on the same site to actually see how to change your firmware to enable homebrew.

As long as you don't have the latest 3.30 firmware, you'll be fine, and even if you do, don't worry and check the pspupdates news page for news as to when the homewbrew-enabled version is released.

I think general consensus is pretty much the exact opposite of that. The fact that the DS uses a clamshell design provides much more screen protection than the PSP. Further the PSP seems to use the same high contrast/glare xbrite design that some of the Sony laptops use. This seems to make minute scratches show up much more so than if the screen had a less glossy finish. Basically the PSP screen looks great but frankly it's a scratch magnet so you definitely want a screen protector.

I don't use a screen protector at all (mostly because I always get the damn bubbles in the sticker as I'm trying to put them on...). That said, I keep my PSP in a case when I'm not using it. You can use Sony's official foam sock, or upgrade to one of the many other options. I bough this DATEL accessories pack last year, which was super cheap and came with a PSP case, a UMD holding case (holds 5 games), a snap-on hand grips thingy that is also an extra battery, car charger, USB cable, different anaglog nubs, and a desk stand for playing movies. Whew. I think Best Buy was clearing them out a few months ago for only $19.99, so I'm not sure if they carry them anymore.

I also bought an extra sony battery a while back, when a price mistake at Best Buy had them selling for $7.99. I've heard scary stories about using 3rd party batteries, though, so buyer beware.

The original PSP deluxe pack came with a little screen cleaning cloth, and that's the only thing I use regularly... simply to remove the finger prints and smudges around the d-pad.

Re: Memory Stick-- I bought a 2GB one, and two weeks later bought a 4 GB one for $64.99 through Amazon.com. I'f you're not going to be using it as a media machine, or if you're not running ISOs or PS1 games, then it's probably not worth it. I have mine packed, though... gotta love being able to play Castlevania SOTN or FFT whenever and wherever I want (this all requires the use of custom firmware, however...)

Speaking of which... I believe any firmware below 3.11 (?) can be downgraded, but you need a copy of GTA: LCS (a non greatest hits version) to get it to run. If you can get it running, you'll be in for a treat... there is a very active homebrew scene, and lots of interesting apps to try (I like PSP Radio, which allows you to stream shoutcast music from a wireless network to your PSP).

But even if you don't go the homebrew route, firmware 3.30 allows you to get FREE wifi access at any t-mobile hotspot (all Starbucks, many other locations) which is a kind of neat plus.

re:games-- I listed some of my recent (and not so recent) favorites above... like the PS2, the PSP now has a large library of SOLID "greatest hits" games to take advantage of. I like LUMINES, but I also suck at it... I've only broken 100,000 points a couple of times. Not sure what I'm doing wrong.

I just bought DAXTER and SYPHON FILTER... and as I said in the other thread, I've just been playing some import anime fighting games (Bleach 3, and Naruto Narutimate Portable, which plays sort of like Smash Bros).
