It only just struck me that some countries can legally refuse a name. That seems pretty crazy to me. I wonder if we have similar laws in the US regarding names containing obscenities or something along those lines?

That's too damn funny. I saw the title in the recent threads sidebar and immediately knew whom this was about.

[Edit] Now that I RTFA rather than just mousing over the link I see it's not really about them.

And yea, I'm not even going behind the lines in those people's brains to try to figure out why they're doing that.

I know many countries have certain rules and names that aren't allowed. I know Germany strictly forbids Hitler (for obvious reason) and I also remember them denying a couple who wanted their child named Osama bin Laden. Norway also has certain rules and names that are in a 'no-go' zone. Quisling comes to mind...

Why someone finds Metallica offensive I can't quite grasp. Those swedes!

In the Netherlands its even up to the civil servant to decide if the name is proper or will be refused. So it comes down to the tastes of a other person, but it hardly gets a problem around here. There are some really goofy names out there.

I know Metallica has been refused in Belgium too. The civil servan decides wether a name is too ridiculous as to damage the future of the child.

And count me in on the "immediately thought of Metallica" crowd.

Well if the parents want to change their own names to Metallica thats fine.
But to give that name to a child. Think about what happens to children that stands out at school??? They are more likely to be bullied by classmates.
However if the child wants to change his/her name when she is able to make the decition themselves. 14++ years old, thats fine.

This is really about inmature parents that ain't thinking about whats best for their child, and should society let them get away with it.

I remember while in Japan, a family tried to register the name "Akuma"(Devil) for their newborn and it was rejected. Essentially every family has a page on the local government registry book. When you are married you have a page created for your family (clan, house etc). So my wife and I, upon getting married had a page dedicated to the Irongut-clan. When you have a child you add the new names to your family page in the government registry.

I don't think the name was outrightly rejected for poor taste, but that the district demonstrated the name didnt meet naming standards. (I forget the rules, and would guess its just a pre-tense to address a name like this.)

School bullying always seemed a pretty serious issue in their media. I think it might've been a death sentence for the child if it had been approved.

I liked the S&M Album because it was different, but Metallica started there decline with there self entitled album. I have been a Metallica fan ever since I first heard their music back in grade school. I have all their CD's EXCEPT St. Anger. I flat out refuse to buy that one. But anyway to get back on topic.

Honestly my wife and I named our Daughter Skylee which is the girl version of Skyler and people looked at us weird for that. What is wrong with that? It is not a common name, but it almost like the people that name the girl Mercedes, or Hope, or even Amethyst. I can see a name like Metallica, is a cross (to me or how I would justify it) between Mellisa and Jessica. But hey that is only my opinion.

I'm with the 'no good album since 1988' crowd. The self-titled 'Black' album was so-so at best, I bought Load hoping for stuff that wouldn't suck, and Reload can be lumped in with that. I'm not touching S&M or St. Anger with anything short of of a nuclear weapon at a very safe distance.

As to names for children, I'm all for original, interesting names; mine is somewhat boring, after all. But after a band? And a crappy litigation happy band who decided to $#!& all over their fans? Thanks, but no thanks.

In America you can name your kid whatever you like. I swear to FSM the other day I heard a woman in the supermarket call her kid "Dorito."
