GTA IV catch-all slurpage
Thursday, March 29th, 2007 - 8:09am
In a little under 10 hours as I write this; GTA IV countdown.
I'm pretty excited to see what Rockstar are going to do with the series, especially with all the nay-sayers out for blood at present.

I think I've just oozed a little fluid.

Ew. I think I just threw up a bit.

I'm looking forward to it. Considering the fact that they heavily advertised the first trailer, I don't expect it to be a disappointing 5-second teaser with target renders. (That would be odd anyway given the release schedule.)
I hope they add a skip feature for racing and times missions. I had to quit San Andreas after trying that damn bike race mission a trillion times. Yeah I suck at racing, but wait with laughing until I point my shotgun to your face.
I don't watch, I interact!
Maybe it'll be a world full of zombies! Dang 7 hours to go...
What, Grand Theft Braaaaiiiins?

Maybe it'll be in the 60s or 70s? Dang that countdown timer!
Yeah, that was a hard one. What I did was jump off my bike at the start of the race and murder the other racers.

It probably wouldn't be profitable but I'd love to see one set in the 1920s with an online co-op mode for running your own mob organization. Prohibition, speak easys, Al Capone, tommy guns, corrupt cops, "little Italy" Chicago... Hmmmmm, maybe I'll rent a couple mob movies on the way home tonight.

Good idea, Lock. I've not wanted to buy any of the GTA games because of the criminal theme, but I'd almost certainly buy one set in the 1920s or 30s.
Rhymes with 'yidcaff'. I don't use smilies. Imagine a wink and a wry grin at the end of most of my sentences. I don't like using exclamation marks either. I'm more friendly than you imagine.
I admit my curiosity is piqued.
Not sure what I'm hoping for, but I wouldn't be too surprised if they returned to Liberty City, seeing as this is the next big number shift in the series.

I still want to see a GTA entry where you're playing as a member of the police force, not a criminal. Just to turn things around. And no, not Crackdown; something more on the serious side like GTA.
Yes, I know GTA isn't necessarily great for serious story, but San Andreas showed a lot of potential in that regard.
Rockstar are already working on L.A. Noire that takeplace in the 40s
I wonder if a game in the 20s or 30s will not be to much similar.
To be precise, it's not Rockstar themselves - some Australian developer is doing that for them.
I won't even get started on the whole GTA 20's and 30's thing...
I'm surprised Jack Thompson hasn't already filed suit in order to review the game before it's shipped... I mean finished.

Yeah, the game was called "Mafia." And The Godfather game, to a certain extent. Rockstar shouldn't try to emulate them.
The "Opposing Force" idea is interesting. Replay one of the GTA storylines but from the cop's perspective.

I wonder if the game will be about a dystopian future (as they always are), in which the state is corrupt and you're still a 'criminal' but you're actually trying to bring down an oppressive system.

That sounds cool. I think it's been done in some games, but not in any that I've played.
Draco: Good call on Mafia; my understanding is that it was very much like GTA in the 20's. I know Duffman played some of it.
When I first heard about GTA IV, it was sort of a no-brainer, but now that I think about it, I didn't finish Vice City, and I skipped San Andreas altogether. Then I didn't finish (or haven't yet, anyway) Liberty City Stories on the PSP (despite having some good times with it), and skipped Vice City Stories altogether.
I think they're going to have to offer something new for me to be interested; I LOVED GTA3, and played some of GTA in the 80s and some of GTA on the go, but it was all the same. And if they haven't fixed the freakin' targeting system (which I can't believe they didn't address before now), they can forget it. Just copy Mercenaries already!
In summary: GTA IV must be a real step forward to get my money. Mercenaries 2 could probably get away with being more of the same, but prettier.

GTA 4 Vendeta? It'll have voice-over work by Hugo Weaving and instead of buying clothes & running on the treadmill you'll read banned literature and buy moustached masks.

Maybe it'll be GTA:2069 and you'll be stealing spaceships, and taking on alien factions. Oh also it has to have space boobs. Boobs in space there isn't any gravity!

Look at the font... What does that say to you?
Gimme a second... wait for it...
I got nothing. Looks like their other font. Damn.
Oo! It does have some highlights in the middle, like a horizon. Maybe there'll be more planes? It'll be GTA in a generic Caribbean area? Or Meditteranean?

I played it, and it was. Except that you're limited to about 35 mph because, well, engines in the 1920's sucked hard.

Grand Theft... umm... Ahhhhhhh!
If Thompson loses Take Two's case against him, he'd end up having to pay for their legal fees on that suit.
I really don't like the idea of a game set in the 20s, 30s, 40s, etc. A near future one would be cool, maybe with you working for a corrupt corporation.

The best part about this trailer is that it doesn't release until about 30 minutes after I leave for work today. Stupid money.
