Thought I'd repurpose this thread as a catch all MMA thread, keeping the buy stuff here but will update with whatever events are coming up.

Huge news in the world of MMA (of which myself and I believe Cannibal Crowley are the only fans of around here ), Zuffa LLC (the corp that owns UFC) has purchased their biggest competitor, the Japanese fighting organization PrideFC.

http://www.mmaweekly.com/absolutenm/templates/dailynews.asp?articleid=36...

Quote:
The Japanese newspapers reported today in Tokyo, Japan that the UFC has bought Pride. Rumors of the sale have been circulating for a while, but the deal now appears to be done. One of the newspapers in Japan, SportsHochi, reported that Lorenzo and Frank Fertitta, who own UFC parent company Zuffa LLC, will start a new company, thus disbanding Dream Stage Entertainment, the parent company of Pride. DSE/Pride President Nobuyuki Sakikabara, who brought Pride to the United States and was successful in making the Pride brand one of the most compelling MMA promotions in the world, is reportedly resigning from his position.

The new company that will operate Pride apparently won't be run directly by UFC or Zuffa, but will be its own entity owned by the Fertittas, so that Pride and the UFC will operate separately. It is also being reported that the two promotions will hold a joint super show once per year. SportsHochi reports that Pride 34 on April 8th will be the last Pride show run by DSE.

So, will Pride be a Japanese or a United States promotion? Apparently, Pride looks to continue to do shows in both Japan and the United States. Intentions are to still have the Lightweight Grand Prix starting in May, with the GP consisting of three shows, all taking place in Japan. The annual New Year's Eve show is still in the plans to take place in Japan. There are also plans to do 2-3 more shows in the United States this year.

There will be a press conference held in Tokyo, Japan at the Roppongi Hills Arena on Tuesday, March 27th, which will be open to the press and fans alike.

Huge news indeed. I wonder what this will mean for the fighters and their salaries now that there is really only 1 big organization to fight for. On a more positive note this should open up some of the dream matches people have been hoping for.

WHAT! That is awesome! I posted a long time ago on sherdog about how cool it would be for the Champions from UFC to compete against the Champions of Pride! Seems like my dream of an internation or world belts is closer to coming true.

I've been watching mma since the 1st ufc, and it has slowly stolen me away from all other sports including college football which is saying alot based on where I'm from.

I can't wait to tell my g/f. I've gotten her turned onto mma.

Also it will be cool for them to start using the same rules. I've seen a few matches where people forget in the heat of the fight. That is if they consolidate the rules.

Thankfully it will be a lot easier to get cross organization matches now that they'll basically have the same owners. On the downside, Pride's rule set is at risk. They'll likely keep the ring so the organizations will look different; but I won't be surprised when even the overseas Pride fights make soccer kicks and downed knees illegal as well as switching to a 10-point must system.

It would only be cool if they switched over to Pride's rules because the UFC's sucks compared to Pride.

Yeah true enough. I have 3 of the PrideFC box sets, and it is really good bang for the buck. Like $20 for Pride volume 1 1-5, and volume 2 is 6-9 and 11(not sure why 10 isn't included), then volume 3 is 12-16.

Seeing as UFC is the buyer I'd imagine they'll decide the rules, but I'm hoping for a hodgepodge of both. I personally dislike the boxing ring. Every fight has the refs dragging the fighters into the middle, and it just breaks the flow of the fight having to do so. At any rate I'm excited to see how this plays out!

On sherdog. Looks like a done deal!

Quote:
Fertitta spoke of making mixed martial art equivalent to global sports such as baseball and soccer. "This is really going to change the face of MMA," Fertitta said. "Literally creating a sport that could be as big around the world as soccer. I liken it somewhat to when the NFC and AFC came together to create the NFL."

The NFL's Super Bowl came as a result of the NFC-AFC merger, and Fertitta envisions "Super Bowl" type cards between UFC and PRIDE fighters, including Randy Couture, Tim Sylvia, Chuck Liddell, Matt Hughes, Diego Sanchez, B.J. Penn facing PRIDE stars such as Fedor Emelianenko, Wanderlei Silva, Mauricio Rua, Dan Henderson, Shinya Aoki, Tatsuya Kawajiri, Takanori Gomi and Hayato Sakurai.

To bad Sakuraba is in K-1 now...

I'd like to see UFC start using knees to a downed opponent while I'd like Pride to start using elbows. Stomps I could do without.

I wonder what the Fedor situation is going to be, it's looking more and more like he's going to stay in the MMA ghetto (aka the horrid Bodog fight) and that would be a tremendous waste of the best fighter ever.

Check out that sh*t eating grin

Some details about what is going to change. Short version: Pride adopting UFC rules and weight classes, keeping scoring system.

Dave Meltzer wrote:
The battle plan will be to run separate shows and maintain separate staffs. The attempt will be to make the promotions competitive rivals, even though they would no longer be business rivals. No specifics were given, but they only seemed to indicate minimal mixing of talent. There would be a Pride roster of fighters and a UFC roster. There would be matches of champions in each promotion, although when and how often had not been determined. The indication was the mixing of talent would be limited to occasional champion vs. champion matches, perhaps once per year in each weight class, where neither specific title would be at stake. Although White or Fertitta would bring up any names of specific dream fights to the U.S. press, in the Japanese meeting he brought up Fedor Emelianenko vs. Randy Couture, Chuck Liddell vs. Mauricio Shogun Rua, Dan Henderson vs. Anderson Silva, Josh Barnett vs. Andrei Arlovsky and Georges St. Pierre vs. Takanori Gomi as potential matches.

Pride would continue holding matches in the ring and be, as Fertitta called it, a "Japanese-centric" organization while UFC would be an "American-centric" organization. The only significant change talked about would be worldwide unified rules would be put in place, which would be the same rules UFC fights under, with the elimination of knees to the head on a downed fighter, stomps and soccer kicks in Pride, but adding elbows. White said Pride would keep its judging criteria for fights in Japan, but obviously, when running in the U.S., would use the commission-dictated ten-point-must system. Pride will also have weight classes change for worldwide consistency, and will crown champions at 155, 170, 185, 205 and heavyweight. Currently Pride has champions at 161 (Takanori Gomi), 183 (Dan Henderson), 205 (Henderson) and heavyweight (Fedor Emelianenko).

No new television deal, which Pride desperately needs in both Japan and the U.S. to be viable long-term, were announced. White did mention hoping to get back on the Fuji Network. Pride will run shows in the U.S., although no date for a next show was announced. UFC is looking at running shows in Japan.

Well UFC and Pride are going to remain seperate organizations so I wouldn't get too worried about it.

I don't really like that Pride will be adopting UFC's rules. Pride has always had more enjoyable fights to watch. The UFC rules, while safer, seem to take a lot of passion out of "taking out" a downed opponent.

Maybe we'll get lucky and see even more of Cro Cop in the USA

The only "safer" part that could be argued is the soccer kicks and stomps, knees to the head on the ground aren't any more dangerous than the other options available. I'd be in favor of legalizing knees only, that would put a quick end to a lot of thee crappy double leg shots that we've been seeing in the UFC.

Since he has a contract with the UFC we can pretty much bet on it. In fact, I believe he's on the card again in April.

I think Silva has to get some wins under his belt before we see that matchup. 2 vicious knockout losses, the last one to someone moving up a weight class is definitely not a good sign.

True, but he lost to Mirko Crocop, and Dan henderson. So at least he didn't lose to some nobodies.

Plus Dana doesn't like Wandy. Dana has even said that Silva no longer deserves a shot at Chuck. Maybe they'll fight after UFC 71 when Rampage beats Chuck again.

According to the official Chutebox USA site (Wanderlei Silva's training camp), Wanderlei will again be fighting at Pride 34, this time against the returning Igor "Ice Cold" Vovchanchyn who hasn't fought in over a year and a half.

Should make for a very interesting bout, though I worry for Wanderlei, he's jumping into the ring a bit too frequently and getting hurt pretty badly in the process.

Also tomorrow brings UFC Fight Night 9 to Spike TV at 8pm EST. Fight card is as follows:

Main Card Bouts:
-Joe Stevenson vs. Melvin Guillard
-Kenny Florian vs. Dokonjonosuke Mishima
-Antoni Hardonk vs. Justin McCully

Preliminary Bouts:
-Drew Fickett vs. Keita Nakamura
-Kuniyoshi Hironaka vs. Forrest Petz
-Naoyuki Kotani vs. Thiago Tavares
-Wilson Gouveia vs. Seth Petruzelli
-Roan Carneiro vs. Rich Clementi
-Kurt Pellegrino vs. Nate Mohr

My predictions:

Stevenson vs. Guillard
This is definitely a "styles make fights" bout. Stevenson brings a very strong grappling game while Guillard is a viscious striker. I think Stevenson has the edge here, but all it takes is one solid shot from Guillard to turn it around. I say Stevenson by Submission, second round.

Kenny Florian vs. Dokonjonosuke Mishima
While Florian is the favorite here due to having more publicity on this side of the pond, I think Mishima brings a more well rounded game to the table. It's a fairly close matchup but I think Mishima is going to walk away with a decision victory. Also he has the coolest name ever.

Antoni Hardonk vs. Justin McCully
I don't know a whole lot about either fighter. I know Hardonk is a heavy striker and McCully appears to have a heavy submission background. McCully was brought in as a late replacement for Frank Mir who had to bowout due to a training injury. I can't really call this one with any real authority, but I'll give it to Hardonk by TKO.

Drew Fickett vs. Keita Nakamura
This one sounds like an interesting fight. Fickett has a ton of fights under his belt against some decent competition and Nakamura has only had one loss and that was at UFC Fight Night 7. They are both Submission fighters and I suspect Fickett has the edge there so I am going to call Fickett by submission, first round.

I don't know enough about the other Prelim fights to really give any accurate calls though I know Rich Clementi tends to get destroyed every time he steps in the ring so I'd have to give him a very low shot at winning his bout.

I really can't wait for TUF5 to start. Not only do we get to see Bullshido's resident UFC fighter (J-Lau); but we'll get to see a lot more lightweight fights as well (both during the season and in the future). I just wish that they'd move it from Thursdays because our BJJ club trains on Thursday nights so I end up missing it live and having to watch it the next day.

Stevenson vs. Guillard
I have to go with Guillard partially because Stevenson is such a boring fighter. He does too much lay & pray, and a majority of his fights go to decision. Joe looks strong at 155; but we've yet to see how the cut affects his conditioning. Guillard's ground game has come a long way and I believe that it will be enough to stuff a few takedowns as well as get enough stand ups in order to KO Stevenson (hopefully with a bodyshot).

Kenny Florian vs. Dokonjonosuke Mishima
Mishima lost his first fight in the UFC and I think he'll repeat that feat again. Florian's losses come from high caliber opponents and I believe that he'll submit Mishima.

Antoni Hardonk vs. Justin McCully
Hardonk by KO because I like Dutch kickboxers, especially when they have good leg kicks. I don't think he'll cruise through McCully as easily as his last fight though.

Drew Fickett vs. Keita Nakamura
Nakamura has yet to impress me while Fickett has a resume full of victories, Fickett by submission.

Kurt Pellegrino vs. Nate Mohr
I have a thing for high amplitude throws. That combined with greater experience leads me to pick Pellegrino.

Wilson Gouveia vs. Seth Petruzelli
Petruzelli had a horrible performance against Matt Hamill and I don't see any way for him to get an edge against Gouveia. I think Gouveia will end the fight with a submission unless he tries to "prove himself on his feet" like many BJJ black belts seem prone to do in MMA.

I don't have enough info to make a call on the rest of them.

Sinatar wrote:

I think he's one of those fighters who is hard to call because you never know which version of him will show up. Sometimes he performs and sometimes he doesn't, no consistency whatsoever.

UFC 70: NATIONS COLLIDE

The thread title is right, this pay per view is coming free to people in the US and Canada on Spike TV, 9pm EST.

The (incredibly stacked) fight card:

The Main Event

Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic (22 - 4 - 2) vs. Gabriel Gonzaga (7 - 1 - 0)
vs

Cro Cop is returning to the Octagon in what should be a gimme. Cro Cop is an absolutely astonishing striker with the most accurate powerful strikes in the entire sport. To top that off he has some incredible takedown defense which means submission fighters (like Gonzaga) have a real hard time with him. He has fought the best of the best and I just don't see Gonzaga bringing anything to the table that Cro Cop hasn't dealt with in the past. Cro Cop via first round KO.

The Sub Events

Ryoto "Lyoto" Machida (9 - 0 - 0) vs. David Heath (7 - 0 - 0)
vs.

Originally Lyoto was supposed to fight Forest Griffen, but Griffen got a severe case of Staph infection in his knee and couldn't make the fight. David Heath had to step in at short notice and really isn't up to Lyoto's level. Heath does have some heavy hands and packs some serious power but Lyoto is just a more well rounded technical fighter who has an answer for everything Heath brings to the table. I don't know if Lyoto will finish him though so I say Lyoto takes this via decision.

Michael "The Count" Bisping (12 - 0 - 0) Vs. Elvis Sinosic (8 - 9 - 2)
vs.

This is a very one sided fight designed to help boost their rising star in TUF3 winner, Michael Bisping. Sinosic is 1 - 5 in the UFC with one lucky win over Jeremy Horn in his first fight and a string of losses since then (though to his credit, they were all tough guys). I don't see Sinosic hanging with Bisping's standup and I doubt he'll get him down. Bisping via first round TKO.

Andrei "The Pitbull" Arlovski (10 - 5 - 0) vs. Fabricio Werdum (9 - 2 - 1)
vs.

This is my candidate for fight of the night. Both are excellent fighters in completely opposite ways. Former heavyweight champ Arlovski packs a nuclear bomb in his right hand and has some decent sambo ground skills. Werdum on the other hand is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu master and has some amazing submission skills. I really can't call this one, it's very very close. It'll come down to whoever can implement their gameplan better then the other guy. Arlovski does have one big advantage though, he is extremely well conditioned whereas Werdum has had problems with gassing out in the past. The longer the fight goes, the better Arlovskis chances become.

Cheick Kongo (9 - 3 - 1) vs. Assuerio Silva (12 - 5 - 0)
vs.

Another interesting bout. Kongo was thought to be the next big thing in the UFC HW division when he displayed some amazing striking skills against some tough guys. This all came to a crashing halt when he fought Marrero who took it to the ground and showed the world that Kongo has no ground skills. At all. Assuerio Silva is a very experienced fighter and has fought some tough guys, he has some good submission skills and if he can get this to the ground he'll sub Kongo with little trouble. Silva via submission first round.

The Undercard

Matt Grice Vs. Terry Etim
Junior Assuncao Vs. David Lee
Victor Valimaki Vs. Alessio Sakara
Dennis Siver Vs. Jess Liaudin
Edilberto Crocota Vs. Paul Taylor

So there's my take on it. For folks who haven't watched a UFC pay per view before, this is the perfect opportunity to give it a try. I mean who can say no to free?
